Some of the high profile departures that I can remember over the years:

Rush
McManaman
Fowler
Owen
Torres
Suarez

Common to all them is that I believe they played their best football with the Reds. I can't think of too many that have gone on to be better players, perhaps Beardsley and Alonso, but I would argue they maintained a level of brilliance throughout. Can anyone think of players that have stepped up after leaving the club?

Sterling
Mascherano
Alonso.

Tbf I would say Alonso did.
He was absolutely excellent for us but went on to be World-class level.

Mcmanaman would champions league and I think we La Ligas. I’m not sure what you mean with Beardsley though. Suarez has also won champions league and La Ligas.

I certainly think Suarez stepped up from being a world class player to being the best striker in the world after he left us for Barca, slipping this year with his injuries though. Can’t argue that Sterling has stepped up his game in terms of his end product as well.

Agree with Sterling, and perhaps Alonso did get even better. However I do think Suarez was better for us, completely relished being the main man rather than in Messi's shadow.

Jonesred, I was thinking of improvements in performance and footballing skills, rather than number of honours acheived - many have gone on to win more, not particularly difficult with our recent history.

I’d still say Beardsley played better for us than Everton.

Sterling, Kuyt, Arbeloa, Mascherano, Insua, Mikel San Jose to name a few.

Macca, Sterling, Suarez and Alonso got better and won things or will win things (Sterling) . The others like Torres declined enormously.

Beardsley did perform better for us than Everton, but the fact was that he was sold far too early.

Suarez has been brilliant for Barca.

Suarez literally scored his 132nd goal for Barcelona today. his career strike rate is pure madness.

{Ed025's Note - pure madness being the operative word.. :)
