We got what we got for him because heis young and English.

Sterling believed all the hype about himself and though he had achieved everything already.

Lack of guidance. I hate to admit it, but we probably needed a stronger Character in the dressing room. Gerrard had already left the club earlier that summer. Otherwise he probably would've talked to Sterling like he did with Suarez and bought us another season of his career.

I know people keep slating Sterling and don't get me wrong he has not been a £50m player, but in this season despite a bit part role he has 10 goals and 21 assists across all competitions.

He is still a good player, he is only judged so harshly because he hasn't improved enough or as expected. At 20 he was a key player for us and now 2 years on he is being replaced by City. He is still scoring and creating goals at a rate no individual in our team except Mane and Coutinho can compete with.

Can understand people calling him over hyped but to be fair he works unbelievably hard on the pitch. I think it's more to do with he's natural ability and striking of the ball is just poor.

So are people already writing Sterling off?

If so, I'm a little confused. It feels like since City bought Bernardo Silva, everyone has written Sterling's career off and is saying he was never even that good. I think it's a little unfair. He's only 22. He was a good player for us and I actually think he's been quite good for City. He's also had some very poor performances, but young players tend to be inconsistent. I still think he has a good career ahead of him at City and expect him to improve.

He's the same age as Origi, is a more developed player and yet most people seem to think Origi needs time to develop, yet at the same age, Sterling's career is already over?

Nice fair comment mk.

There are some bitter people on here.

Nothing about being bitter Davey, if a player doesn't want to be at the club then so be it.

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see coutinho leave this summer.

What we got for sterling was a cracking deal.

Think you have misunderstood my post yesterday Rover. I meant I felt sorry for him because he is in a similar situation to what Wright Phillips found himself in. My comparison was not because he has a lack of ability, but because he is going to end up stagnating as he watches 30 games a season from the bench.

At no point yesterday did I say he was a bad player. If anybody took that from my post, they have completely missed my point. I feel sorry for him because he is too good to be a bit part player and if he had been advised properly, he would be a key player at our club right now. I thought I made that clear, but just to reiterate, I do not think Sterling is a bad player. I just think he has failed to live up to his potential. Plenty of very good players can have the same accusation levelled at them though. Failing to reach your potential does not make you a bad player in every case.

Gerrard and Lampard debate is a good example. Gerrard was a supreme talent who never played to his best consistently. Lampard was a run of the mill talent as a kid who got the absolute most out of his abilities. Gerrard still had a pretty fantastic career though. Sterling could too if he took his eyes off of the green in his wallet, and focused on getting back on the green that is the pitch.

Nobody has written him off but the fact silva has been bought shows he has stagnated and not improved. He still has a career but maybe not at city unless he is happy spending time on the bench. Bringing origi into this is nugatory, this has nothing to do with him. Different players develop at different speeds and origi has been asked to play a slightly different way this season and he will have benefited and learned from the experience.

DMK, you make some valid points but you seem to be forgetting a lot of things Sterling was doing wrong while he was here. He was indeed very good, playing in a team that was really working well together so that helps your confidence. When Suarez left and Studge was out, BR put too much pressure on him and he was not ready to take that on. His agent got into his head and so did the hype and BR's nonsensical comments about the contract and that was it. He was never the finished article and frankly, he has not improved since he left us cos he still is poor in front of goal, just like he was here. This is why Pep has replaced him with Silva and Sterling is not in Sane's league. This is not about being bitter (nonsensical comment by Davey) . It is just appoint of view you can agree with or not. As for your comment that Sterling was scoring and creating goals for City more than anyone in our team apart from Mane and Couts is just wrong. We are a much better team with out him ( Wij has 6 and 10 assists, Lallana has 8 goals 7 assists) now and he wouldn't make our staring 11 right now so there you go.
