Sometimes it's really interesting coming on here and seeing how everyone comes to such different conclusions based off the same information. As I was walking home last night my internal monologue was very much 'phew, we got away with that! '. I check here and see the consensus is we played great and coulda-shoulda got more.

And I get that, Klopp came up with a game plan which worked almost perfectly. The formation, the decision to play Origi and the approach all payed off and we created better scoring opportunities than they did. The bottom line is that we're currently winning (as it stands we're going through) and I think we would have all bitten their hand off if we were offered a score draw ahead of the match.

But for me it was really uncomfortable viewing. How deep we defended, the decision to pass it around at the back, our inability to retain possession in midfield when we had the ball and our surrendering of it when we didn't, with the possible exception of Can I think our midfield was very poor. I know the selection of Origi worked but I really thought it made a statement before the game that we were going to play negatively.

Given the context of the game the result is far more important and if we'd played our normal game we may well have got slaughtered but if Allardyce or Van Gaal did to us what we did to Dortmund I think we'd be very unhappy. I really thought we had the players and the game to go toe to toe with them last night and I'm disappointed we didn't try. I really want to win the EL so I'll suck up us gaming results but I really hope we show how good we can be either next Thursday or later in the competition.

The few times we all pushed forward how we would normally they caught us out, especially with Weigl and his perfect passes! We gifted them opportunities playing how we were, if we played more attacking football they would have loads more chances. Without Lovren and Sakho getting in the way it could have easily been 3-1 to Dortmund. That being said I think Klopp got it spot on and i feel the players done a great job it could have been a few more for us if it was not for Weidenfeller.

As Klopp said a while back, sometimes you have to bring better teams down to your level to beat them, and that's what Klopp did last night, he knows those players and knew he had to spoil their game for us to have any chance of success against them and it worked.
Reus and Aubamayang are different class and we completely destroyed the pair of them, how many teams have managed that.
Lets not forget that it was Dortmund's keeper who kept them in it.
We have to expect that kind of performance from this team against better sides until Klopp is able to bring in better quality than he has at his disposal.
I have absolutely no problem with taking a more negative approach against better teams if it means we get results. What's the point in going all guns blazing with inferior players and taking spanking!

I thought it was excellent tactically. Klopp knew they'd have possession for good periods of the game and we'd have to counter Mkhtiryan, Reus and Aubemeyang and the Defence did that superbly in an almost 4-5-1 at times, but then he left enough out there to ensure we also had enough play in their half of the pitch too and really threaten at times too and we could easily have nicked a few goals.

Our best chances were from proper buildup play, not smash and grab like we were an inferior team, there's nothing to be ashamed of in setting up like that against a dangerous Dortmund team away from home.

It was the first leg of a 2 legged tie against the favourites and one of the most in form teams in Europe! Why on earth would we go toe to toe with them no matter how good we are? The Liverpool of old would go to these places, play boring get a result and then spank them at Anfield. Last night was a great away performance in Europe. Kill the oppositions attacking threat, quieten the crowd and get an away goal. Perfect for me!

I don't really disagree with any of you, Klopp's decisions were completely vindicated and you can't argue with the result but I can't think of last night as a positive experience. To me that wasn't a controlled display, it was a back's to the wall one where we bloodied their nose with a wild swing. As I said originally, I find it interesting how we come to different conclusions with the same information.

Agree pipscreamer . Great away performance and we could of scored another 2 or 3 goals, tactically we were sound. Roll on the 14th.

Muscat, you do know we were playing away from home against a team that has lost one game at home all season, a trident of attackers that have scored 75 goals among them, ripped Spurs a new one and a much better team than ours, right? So what should we have done, in your op? Just go toe to toe with them and get smashed like Spurs did? We weren`t negative in any way. We didn`t tpark the bus and we didn`t wilt under pressure. We contained them and made them look ordinary. We pressed when we needed to and dropped off when we needed to which made them run out of ideas. And with the way Origi made Hummels and Bender look like amateurs, I would say we had a solid away perfs and created the better chances.

It was really good to see the players playing for Klopp last night, as mentioned previously, they out-gunned us individually in the skills department, but we attacked and defended as a unit and counted everything they threw at us, the 10-minute period after they scored saw us throw everything and the kitchen sink at them and if it wasn’t for Weidenfeller we could have been going into next week’s game 2-1 up.

Downside = Hendo.

Agree, the fact we came back stronger after they equalised at home and still created the better chances to win says bucket loads. a year ago we would have crumbled.

A year ago, we wouldn`t have even come out of the group.

We never had a decent midfield which you are referring here. Dortumand were poor which surprised me, At home they never pressed us anc played a very cautious football. Mikthariyan found acres of space behind Can and Hnederson. I have been saying this from nearly an year, We need two top class CM, Disciplined and has a fine passing range, Lallana did not had a sniff off the ball whoile first half and largely duw our distribution from the center of the park were poor.

Can - Hendo - Milner are workhorse, Just like Besic - Mcarthy - Cleverly. No creativity All 6 are positionally poor and indisciplined.
