wanted to hear from Eds and fellow posters about this.

I used to love Carra. Always gave his all, a fantastic defender and loved the club.

His interview when he said 'Who's bigger than Liverpool? ' was pure gold and his autobiography was an awesome read.

Used to think that he might make a great coach / manager if he decided to.

But as he went on Sky and stayed on longer and longer, I'm beginning to wonder if he has much footballing sense left in him. He once compared Barkley to Gerrard in footballing ability, joined in the fanfare to idolize the current City team (when he had actually played against truly great Utd and Arsenal teams), and the list goes on.

I'm not sure if being on TV has corrupted his sensibility (though Alan Hansen was on TV a long time and he still spoke sense until the day he retired), but i'm beginning to lose respect for him and his footballing opinions (not withstanding the spitting incident) .

{Ed0333's Note - for the most part sky pundits and in generally pundits in the modern era are fed what to say for obvious reasons.

He would have specific topics that are relevant and would have a specific time set aside to talk about them as the great United and arsenal sides are in the past and have nothing to do with the now. I do know what you're getting at but. It's like they all just talk for talking sake until at some stage they make themselves sound stupid.

Hes a vile human imo, stooped as low as diouf, and to a young girl? Some things are just unforgivable and he should have got the boot like grey and that other twit.

Agreed lerchy. He's a div and gets zero respect from me, speaks sh*te on TV and then with the spitting incident there's no excuse, I remember at the time some people on here were saying we all make mistakes, trying to cover for him and its true we do but that kind of behaviour isn't acceptable no matter what.

Pressure and stress can lead a person to do very odd things. I don’t think we can define Carragher by his moment of madness albeit he will be remembered for it.

Let’s not rush to condemn the man. Stress is a mental
Illness. We should be sympathetic.

It’s easy to follow the mantra that he is earning a fortune so he is up for abuse. None of can imagine how we would
Behave if we were constantly in the public eye.

G1dgo what stress did he have when he spat at a child? I must of missed this, I honestly don't mean that as a dig I just fail to understand so I'm asking a genuine question because I'm unaware mate. Stress can indeed Lead to mental illness, trust me I know about that but what Carra did, what's his excuse, he was stressed? If that's the case I had no idea about it but from everything I read at the time it was just him been an absolute fool. From what you have said, maybe I'm wrong mate because if he has had issues then I'd understand it more but I don't believe it one bit, he was in the moment and wound up which resulted in him spitting at a child, if he'd of done it to one of my kids it'd of been a different story, there's no excuse.

Salah, none of us know what causes stress (or any mental illness) in another person nor how it manifests itself. I remember when Stan Collymore was suffering from depression, his then manager at Aston Villa (John Gregory, I think) said ‘What has he got to be depressed about, he’s getting paid £10,000 a week’. Hopefully, attitudes are more enlightened these days so in Carra’s case let’s condemn the action by all means without totally condemning the man.
I am not seeking to minimise or excuse his actions but my understanding is that he was in a moving car and the driver of another moving car was winding him up with hand gestures about the score in a match (Man Utd v Liverpool, I think) . Carra retaliated by winding down his window and spitting at the other car (I know, disgusting and stupid thing to do) without realising that there was a young girl in the passenger seat of the other car. He was publicly ashamed and apologetic for his actions and it is up individuals to decide whether his contrition was genuine or not. As I say, condemn the vile spitting action without totally condemning Carra as a person without knowing what was going on in his head or his life.

{Ed025's Note - please dont play the mental illness card WW, it was a disgusting thing to do and as much as i used to like the guy hes dead to me, you might as well claim blindness seeing as you say he never seen the girl, of course he did but could not help gollying all over them anyway because hes a scumbag, what you are claiming is an insult to mentally challenged people actually mate..

Ed025, I know you like having a go at me (was it something I posted about Gomes? ) but please read my post carefully again. I was making a general point about stress and mental illness, not trying to excuse Carra on the basis of a mental illness. What do I or you or anyone else know about the state of another person’s mental health? That was my point. And as neither you nor I nor anyone else was in the car with Carra we don’t know what he did or didn’t see. I was simply stating what I understand to have happened based on media reports at the time. We can all make up our own mind about what actually happened as you clearly have.
Not everything that happens in the world is black and white.
And Gomes is still slow and overweight.

{Ed025's Note - i dont have a go at you WW your one of the best posters on here, but that does come across as making excuses for him because hes an ex-red mate, would you be saying the same thing if it was gary neville who had committed that vile act? .....i dont think so..

Spot on, Salah and Ed25. WW, you're the one speculating that Carra may have mental issues. He has not said that so you are leaving yourself open to a good rhetorical hiding, man. Also I'm sorry, was Carra stressed when Sky came to him to come be a pundit and take the money? If the answer is no then pls, that excuse should not be aired in public to defend such reprehensible behavior. I mean, Diouf got mad abuse for spitting all over PL grounds and Suarez got the abuse he deserved for biting YET Carra spits in the direction of a little girl and suddenly the goalposts change? Not having that, mate.

What Carra did was despicable, disgusting and reprehensible, end of. If he has mental issues then he needs to go get his head checked and not be allowed in any public space. I remember many esp. some on here, giving excuses as to what may or may not have been said to him. To those people, I say you are complicit in his reprehensible behavior. He's luck he did not spit at my son with me standing there. He would have been concussed on the spot.

RedWolf, written with your usual passion but please take the time to read what I actually posted which was definitely not a defence of Carra’s actions which I described as disgusting, stupid and vile.

Cracking display of double-standards there whereby causing someone concussion (and a possible lifetime of consequences) is an appropriate response to being spat at.
Cant we just accept there was no justification for what Carra did. None at all. Acts of violence and abuse are unacceptable outside a ring or octagon full stop.

It’s amusing how we expect sporting ‘legends’ to be nice people too.
As a footballer he was a Liverpool legend and that won’t change. As a person, I’ve never met him but he disgraced himself with that incident.
On the flip side, everyone deserves a chance to redeem themselves.

{Ed025's Note - the thing is ron that like it or not people like him are role models, what he did was inexcusable and absolutely abhorrent mate and as i was saying to WW would you feel the same if it was a non-liverpool player?, if someone beat up your grandmother would you think they deserved the chance to redeem themselves?, im afraid the world is rife with scumbags like this and for me they dont deserve a second chance, were you campaigning for andy gray and keys to get their jobs back, or ron atkinson or rodney marsh?, they made their bed and now they have to lie on it..
