Can any poster or Ed help me to understand why Phil Charnock and David Thompson never really made it and became first team regulars for Liverpool as both were very highly rated if my memory serves me right and finally if Nick Tanner never had to retire do they think he would of gone on to become a great defender for Liverpool?

{Ed001's Note - neither were good enough and Tanner is a nice guy but was not a great player, though he was not helped by being surrounded by the dross Souness brought in. He was certainly among the better signings of the era, not that it is saying much.}

Anyone remember that turn David Thompson dud, on the right wing I think, near the touch line. It was class. Who did he go on to play for? Was it Fulham?

On the subject of players who never really 'made it' for Liverpool, what was your opinion of Danny Murphy, ed? I unfortunately did not get the chance to watch much Liverpool during the time he was at the club but I know he was one of Gerrard's best mates or something and he really rated him (not that he's a particularly good judge or anything but just tidbits I've read) .

{Ed001's Note - Murphy was an odd one, in his own half he was dreadful and almost always gave the ball away, even when only passing 5 yards. In the opposition half he transformed into a decent enough player, good technique on the ball but lacked the physical attributes and intelligence to be truly top class.}

Danny Murphy always scored against Man united, that alone made him special .

Danny Murphy imo was very underrated. Loved playing against the mancs and he scored absolute pearled. Definitely improved more so at Fulham.

I was never worried when Danny Murphy took a penalty. After Molby, best penalty taker we have ever had IMO.
