Was hoping to hear from Eds and fellow posters.

What do you think are the reasons that contributed to the scarcity of top level British managers currently?

Not too long ago, there was Shankly, Paisley, Daglish, Clough, Ferguson who were dominating/ winning the PL/ 1st division and Europe, but today, none of the top 6 have British managers.

Today, the better known, better regarded (at least by the media) managers are Big Sam, Pulis, Hughes, etc; managers who aren't really winners and are known more for relegation dog fights, dull tactics and aren't expected to win major trophies.

Just curious how did it descend to this stage?

As in every other sport England or British teams always care more about winning rather then how to progress long term
they hardly win and when they do they over cook it so then forget long term aims and ambition
The managers are never taught the true arts and skills of management or coaching and so then just stick to the basics without self progression or wanting to improve
from the players to managers 99 percent are your bog standard with no flair or ability to show or be something different and those who are are lambasted like waddle barnes le tisser etc
Only in this country could Fat Sam ever be a national coach
I rest my case.

I think British managers don't get chances at big clubs that's why they stuck at dog fights. look no further than Everton big Sam has done OK but fans don't like his tactics if he was European he would be called master tactician. like (Conte, Mou, Marco silva. ) But him and pulis are two managers are most underrated managers of premier league era. I just hope sean dyche and Eddie howe get chances at big clubs because they might become new Sam and hughes.

Because what modern day players and managers a like lack and what everyone you listed had is a proper work ethic. that's the simple truth really.

Patience.

That’s it.

Fan patience, Board patience, public patience.

Fergie wouldn’t have had the chance to build his legacy in this era, he would have been sacked within 2-3 seasons.

Too true Zeddicus. We will have to see what happens with Howe and Dyche, mind you. They have both been at their respective clubs for a while now and I can only see them both having their next opportunity at clubs with bigger budgets. It seems British managers only get to cut their teeth when they have achieved promotion to the prem and stayed for a few seasons. There will be a new generation of stock Premier League managers beyond Allardyce, Moyes, Hughes, Pulis, Hodgson et al. I just hope they have evolved tactically since them to allow for progression to the top teams. The current lot coach in a way that is not ambitious enough, maybe the new bunch, when they arrive, will have more cojones.

It's hard to evolve if you don't have budget of city, utd, Chelsea, even liverpool. because most of this teams coaches would been playing like I said earlier eddie Howe (pep, kloop), big Sam, pulis, dyche (Jose, conte) .
It's important what resources you have because if you don't have enough you can only do so much.
For example would Eddie howe or dyche, chirs Houghton get any of top four jobs today if any of coaches retired or got sacked No. In Germany Robert kovac is named manager of Bayern Munich only after a good season with Frankfurt Tsg Hoffenhiem coach Julian Nagelsmann is linked with Every top job.

IMO, British managers when given a chance, are judged on a curve. For example, Steve McClaren made a UEFA final in 2006 and lost to Sevilla. He got WAY too much credit and too much hype in the media and before you knew it, he was England manager for the disaster we now know of. The prob is that whatever relative success they get, they get over-hyped by the media as next England manager or something, w/ o actually critiquing their way of work and what the flaws to their coaching methods are.

Look at Eddie Howe. He gets hyped up so much withe way they play BUT do not point out that they are too open, their midfield does NOTHING off the ball and lack any defensive structure. Same with Dyche. He gets a lot of credit BUT no one says how completely dire Burnley are with that ultra defensive system they play. Should these coaches go to bigger clubs, their flaws will not be hidden and they will be found out in 3 months. LFC gave a British manager a chance and it was his arrogance that cost him his job, in the end. Need I say more?

I agree some managers get over hyped but so do some of the very best pep guardoiola mainly because 90 % of managers would win the leagues with teams like barca, bayern, juve, Porto, inter, real.
