While allen, milner, moreno etc had good games yesterday it was against a stoke side who were clearly well below the usual standard and was making them look good to an extent. The goalie had a nightmare and would have dealt with all the goals better on another day, then nobody is praising milner and moreno. They will always flounder against half decent opposition and the fickle fans come out again, 'oh i've always liked milner/ moreno/ allen he can be important next season etc etc', they've been proven time and again to not be good enough and let us down and 1 good game doesn't change that. Even andy carroll scored a hattrick the other day.

Onto the positives though, mainly beong that sturridge, origi, ojo and stewart all played great and showed their worth, some players proving to be important to us now and makes me so excited for next season.

Just admit they had a good game instead of saying it was the oppositions fault. You can only beat what's in front of you. Milner whilst not been in form has won more titles than our entire squad so if that's proving time and again that he's not good enough I don't know what the expectation is.

Anonymous, bit of a contradiction there. You say Milner Allen and Moreno only played well because the opposition were poor, but went on to say Origi, Sturridge Ojo and Stewart played well against the same poor opposition. You can't have it both ways.

Jesus mate, this is embarrassing. Consider for a second that Stoke were below par because they were made to look poor by a really co-ordinated Liverpool performance? Moreno had a good game forward and back and Milner was decent in the midfield but had two assists, including one really good one. If you take the measurable end product out of anyones game on any day then it tends to mean a fairly average performance from them, it's a silly comment. Just accept it mate, we fielded an under strength team who played well and did a good job.

on Thursday Dortmund were below par, sunday stoke were poor, blimey can we not accept we have played well any more? i felt we played well yesterday made 7 changes kept countinho, and our 2 centre halfs fresh for Thursday, gave ojo 45mins of premier league action and saw another example of how reliable and steady kevin stewart can be for us, oh and origi and sturridge showed they can both play up front together.

Thats not the point at all. We did play well and thoroughly deserved to win.

My point is is that if you try to get players like milner, allen and moreno to deliver against teams in a game tougher than that, when we aren't on top and aren't handed mistakes from the opposition, they will come up short.

I commented on sturridge, origi, stewart and ojo because it is important to acknowledge their exceptional performances due to the fact that 3 of them are promising young players continuing good form and 1 has struggled since coming back from injury and was nice to see him back to his old self.

Also the point was mainly to point out i've seen fickle comments regarding milner, allen and moreno and kissing their arse when we know full well they'll be leaving.

But not to detract from the performance because we did actually win and made us all happy.

5 goals and 9 assists in 25 PL games for James Milner this season, a direct contribution to 14 goals, which is more than Coutinho (12) and only bettered by Firminho (16).

I am not a fan of Milner, but he has picked up his game since the turn of the year, and these sort of posts just come across as one without any basis AW.

You can only beat who's in front of you, if they didn't turn up that's their problem we had a game plan and executed it and won it's that simple.

Yeah well balotelli scored 32 in 50 for milan in italy when we bought him, clearly using pure stats was a good idea then as well?

Milner hasn't been as unbearable as he was before the start of the year, yes. But i do believe those goals and assists really are just mostly flukes and more reflect how much he plays rather than his creativity on the pitch. I think all bar 2 of those goals were penalties and most of his assists have been flukes like at the weekend - the plays so many games for us they're bound to get through at some point. If you got up a stat that adjudged what percentage of his crosses, passes and shots actually reached their target, or how many players he takes on, they might tell a different story.

AG - it's also worth bearing in mind that Milner takes pens and a lot of set plays, which does provide a slightly undeserved boost to his numbers. Granted he still has to convert those which isn't easy but it has to be recognised - Suarez's haul without a single penalty ranks way about someone like Rooney's who had slightly more but had about 10 penalties mixed in there!
