Rob Jones and Steve Nicol are my 2 favourite players to ever wear a Liverpool shirt.
I loved Nicol so much when I was a boy, I used to show the hairdresser a picture of him to copy his hairstyle. got to love the 80's.

Rob Jones is my fave Pool right back ever. Would have been a Pool legend if he hadn't had those injury problems.

Cultured and complete full back.

Ed1, was it shin splints or spinal issues that did it for him?

{Ed001's Note - shin splints caused the back problem which in turn made the shin splints worse. Having suffered badly with shin splints myself and dated a female footballer who had been forced to retire because of them as well I can sympathise with him. They are horrible and affect your gait badly which causes back pain.}

Nicol was unbelievable. He could play any area of the back 4 or midfield. I personally think that he was best at full back on either side. Every players book I have read who played with him talk about how funny he was off the pitch and could drink anybody under the table. Yet put him on the pitch he would never stop running. Watch the 86 cup final. He's up and down that line all game. Rob Jones I think was a complete bargain. My memories of him are a very tough to beat defender who could also run all game. The fans used to love his wayward shots. Sadly I also think that signing McAteer didn't help him. He was moved to left back and that coupled with injuries meant he didn't fulfil the huge potential he obviously had.

{Ed001's Note - I met him as a kid and have never seen anyone down pints as quickly as him. Even the Carlsberg rep with him was flabbergasted.}

I was at a Ronnie Whelan testimonial event as a kid and Nicol was there he was great. He had a race with a fella to see who could down a pint and he easily won. Whelan was drinking a pint of wine! Both very nice fellas who hung around all afternoon getting pictures taken and they were happy to speak to everyone. To top the day off I won the signed Ronnie Whelan shirt, great day and a time when there was a closer link between the players and fans.

Nicol was a nutter, didn't Souness have him pushing his Automatic once for half a mile to try and get it to start? Rob Jones was called Trigger because he was gullible as a kid. Loved both players.

I thought Macateer was trigger?

{Ed033's Note - i think Jason McAteer's nickname before he went to Liverpool FC was 'Trigger', however at Liverpool they gave the least brightest person in the team the nickname 'Trigger' and the person who had that name when McAteer arrived was Rob Jones. After a short while at Anfield, the players found out what Jason was like and decided to give him the nickname of 'Double Trigger'
