Regarding social media, why don’t these clubs boycott it indefinitely or until they clean up their act? A week is little more than a token gesture.

{Ed001's Note - exactly, utterly pointless.}

To be fair, clubs and players shouldn't have to boycott it forever, as they're the victims here. I assume it's a case of "we're doing this, and we'll do it again for longer if things don't change". It's the abusers who need to be regulated, clubs and players shouldn't have to cut themselves off to stop abuse.

Not saying it will work, because if Facebook/ Whoever wanted to introduce stronger registration rules, then they could, but it'll cost them money, so changes will only happen when revenues dip by more than it'll cost to implement new measures, and I doubt that'll happen any time soon.

A week is nothing tbh. If it doesn't affect the pockets then it won't really matter.

You are missing the point. The media ban is highlighting an issue and I personally would like to see Liverpool do the same thing. Taking the knee is also making a point, however effective it may seem. If it infuriates the racists then win win for me.

To do nothing is to condone the abuse - is that what you all think? That it’s ok for our players to get abuse because of their skin colour and then that everyone just pretends it hasn’t happened?

It might be a bigger issue than football but football can do it’s bit to combat the abuse.

With all the resources, and money in football. Could it not be possible for an investment group of players or people from around the game to create their own social media site, where all the players migrate too and eventually maybe other public figures (celebrities ect), there they could have much more control, perhaps have a stricter signing up procedure where more information has to be given to have an account. Or more monitors/ tougher protocols.

I know it's not as easy as just putting up a site, but if a group made the site, got expertise from the industry, outside investors and then backing from the club's, tv sports companies and footballers to migrate over to this new sight it could probably be a success. Or at least force the other social media companies to do more.

I thought the same Strange, but I reasoned it would be too much of a deviation from their core business and would be incredibly expensive to launch. Best sticking to your strengths in business.

As for why it's only a week, I think this just shows how powerful the social media companies are - the clubs need the services to connect with fans, but also need to show the players they are against the mindless racism they are subjected to.

I also think in a significant number of cases the press exposure and alike drive trolls to send more and more outrageous things. Trolls will troll and sometimes silence is better (e. g. Privately reporting users), although I understand that social media services have shown they are not likely to ban these users without public pressure. Very difficult situation.
