Luis Suarez is not just a striker

Luis Suarez is not just a striker. For us to replace him we need to replace his work rate, and get a player who can create his own chances from nothing. Sturridge is one of these players, although he also has that poachers instinct as well. Harry was again correct when he said that Aspas needs to get a few minutes towards the end of games we are winning comfortably. If Suarez is really planning on leaving regardless of how well we do, then we need to start giving others a go in that position. In a way, I'd also like this post to be a documented admission of Suarez proving me wrong so far. I genuinely thought he would continue with his greedy ways when he came back, demand the ball too often and make the team weaker. He seems to have come back a new player though. He is linking up well and not giving away possession so freely. I will reiterate, "so far". He has after all only played against Sunderland and Crystal Palace! It would be nice if he could continue this though, and force a bit of humble pie down my throat. As I say though, If he is set in stone leaving we need to start giving other people a go in his spot even if its just as late substitutes. Like I previously mentioned though, Harry rightfully said that Suarez is not just a goal scorer. That would seemingly rule out players like Morgan, Yesil and Borini being able to repalce him like for like (although they are all great players in their own right). However Aspas can create things for himself and also likes to link up with the other striker. I think our new formation (3-4-1-2) with two strikers would suit him better than the 'number 10' role he was used in prior to Suarez's return. A wild card for the spot as well has got to be Jordan Ibe? He can dribble, create, shoot, has pace, links up well etc. He's not Suarez, but he's a damn good young player who has all the attributes to play as a second striker to great effect. Imagine an Ibe-Sturridge pairing for the forseeable future? Scary if Ibe progresses at his current rate.
I saw a post recently that mentioned Athletico were interested in Coutinho. It would be a hell of a shame to lose him after just a year, but we'd be looking at at least £30m for him guys and I hate to say it, but it might be a viable business decision. That is of course only if we can recall Suso. Suso has actually been the better player of the two so far this season by far, and in a much weaker team. If Suso cannot return until next summer, then we simply cannot afford to sell Coutinho as he is our best playmaker available. Texeira and Alberto are great players, but both should be used more as impact subs for now rather than starters. Adorjan and Suso are on loan, Brannagan and Trickett-Smith are just too young, so realistically we only have Coutinho. However I really hope Rodgers starts using Gerrard here to some capacity, be that as an impact sub, or just sharing game time with the young Brazilian. John Aldridge has come out today and called for Rodgers to do the same. I hope we tell Athletico Madrid where to go anyway though. Coutinho is a new fan favourite and the club would be mad to sell him, purely because of the fan backlash it would incur. If it happens next summer though, just remember we will have Suso returning who has as much, if not more potential anyway.
Great result for the U21's last night btw, surely McLaughlin has got to get a chance in the first team? Absolutely sensational little player. I can only assume Rodgers just doesn't want to throw him in the deep end just yet. Brad Smith looked good in his first game since last year (?) as well. Nice to see Cissokho back fit. Good luck to the lad on breaking into the starting 11.
