The real problem with the Sterling episode is that it is creating a swirl of unrelated and nonsensical speculation dragging in John W Henry and the manager. The kid (for that is what he is in many aspects) simply acting out a fantasy that sees him dragged into the Real Madrid circus and emulating others of that well known celebrity team - incidentally, a carousel that throws off stars as soon as they've used up their star status coupons. (Odergaard is a Sterling clone and both will be singed by the Spanish sun!)

What is irksome about all this mess is that there are questions about BR: he was not really the high-profile manager LFC should have had in the first place. Now it's a matter of repairing the damage wrought by an excellent coach but average man-manager. Too much talk about replacements - Klopp and other high profile managers at this stage. I suspect Klopp has been landed by another club (unless JWH has been hard at work as we speak!) and yet the usual suspects fill the name games.

I've been staggered for years by the sport that is the only place of work I can think of where you can be sacked for poor 'performance' - for that's what losing is if you take the manager's salary and call yourself the boss - and walk into a job at another club! "He was useless at ABC United and got them relegated, but hey, let's make him our manager and ask him to spend £20 million of our money!"

Football in crisis? Not when you can cover up all our mistakes with cash. And you thought F1 was predictable and boring.

It's like a double millstone around our necks.
What you ask?
Our history - plain and simple.
If there's one problem with Liverpool supporters (and this is one writing with more than enough years to qualify as one) it's that we bag on and on and on and on and on and on and on . about what we've won as we drift through season after season after season without getting any closer to a title or European glory.

No wonder Man U fans and the arrogant newbies in London laugh at us and say we live in the past. For the first time in many years I sadly have to agree with them.

We have thrown hundreds (yes, count it!) of millions of ££££ away on people like Balotelli, Lambert, Aquilani, Lovren and a score of others and hoped something might click and we would win the PL title. Flops! It is not the way we play and certainly not our ability to scout a good prospect (Coutinho, Can and Sterling) but the dross we surround them with. A team comprises 11 on the pitch and good 8 off it. When did we ever have that great 11 in the past 20 years?

Joe Allen was bought on the manager's whim and yet he has never driven the midfield like Henderson or Gerrard has. Lovren - don't start me on him; Balotelli and Lambert - really? It seems as though The Arrogant One and even our old mate Obscene Whinger look to fill the team with quality, while we have tinkered and dropped in a few lightweights to make the 11.

The problem with football is that we are all experts. The pundits are simply old players with bitterness and self-interest guiding their mouths and brains; managers the men who buy 2 good players and then want the supporters to adore them when the rest of the team is crap! Brenda R puffed out his chest and announced HE would the man to tame and bring out the best in Balotelli! Yet he was the one who also thought it wise to fill the bench with people like Borini and Lambert!

If BR stays (and he will if we look at it coldly) then Johnson goes, Balotelli possibly and who do we persist with? Sterling is heading for the departure lounge with his golden ticket in hand; maybe Coutinho has second thoughts and Can (a tremendous asset) might think of returning to the Bundesliga with Dortmund or Bayern rather than hammer himself into the ground fighting alongside Allen and an untried Origi.

But hey - we've won 5 European Cups and we have history! You're damn right we have but probably no future worth shouting about. Then again, BR or the new manager might have another £50 million to blow away on some PL player from Hull, Burnley or Crystal Palace who has shone brightly for three minutes this year and dazzled the manager.

No other sport sacks people for being poor at the job and then hires them for another team like we do in football. Every person at the top of the game thinks they can do better. Are you really telling me that BR's skills in pikcing a team are superior to mine, yours, that bloke in Bootle, Coventry or Peckham who supports Liverpool? Becuase if you are, then explain to me how he can play Markovic out of position, use Sterling as a wing back and think Lambert will undo fast defences? Maybe I'm the one who knows bugger all about the game (along with the Bootle, Coventry and Peckham fans)?

No.
Come the start of next season when the manager has splurged another £30 million on average and potential, then he'll be banging on about how is "they year we win the PL" . just like in 2001, 2004, 2006, 2014 and hey . "we've won 5 European Cups mate!"

Kamaakris. lol. Don't shop at B&Q though, they are well dear, shop around or use the internet.

3.) 29 Apr 2015 15:02:42
Parallax, that guy from Peckham, do you mean Delboy or Trigger. Or maybe even Rodney with his O'level in physics? Youve got a point there mate. Rodgers is a plonker, he must be related.

endless, you get what you pay for, i find the the quality of the rope in B & Q to be superior, to say homebase. its nice and soft around the neck. As a liverpool fan i have had many a noose adorning my neck, usually after a performance like the one last night. its a wonder i'm still here.

What a waste of space!
You hover on the edge of excitement.
You reach out and nearly touch the hem of greatness. Then eight months down the line you fall flat on your face and try to put a positive spin on it.
Drawing with West Brom wasn't the end of the frustration, it was just another bus stop on the route to "same old, same old" dreams of futures we have had for the past decade.
Forget the 'nearly had it in the bag' 2014 dream. This year has simply been a glossy version of the past few years - poor signings, throwaway results and poor excuses.

The suggestion today that Sturridge may be out for the rest of the season just highlights why I can't be bothered with England and the games they play. Injured in September 2014 and hardly played for the Reds all season. Yes, players get injured, but what use is England in the context of a Premier League and Champions League battle?

Balotelli, Lambert and Lovren: three poor signings and in Lovren, one that should have worked. I can't believe we have thrown away a fair salary in the past year on Lambert when we could have recruited younger players. The salary of a benchwarmer is wasted unless we can be sure he can change a game when he comes on. That was never going to be the case with Lambert.

Lovren: what has gone wrong or did it go wrong before we bought him? Shone on the coast but seemed positively overwhelmed in a big pool. I preferred Kolo Toure to him as at least he would fight for every ball. His performances have been major let-downs and I question the purchase rather than the player. No matter what the manager says, it does NOT take nearly a whole season for a player to settle into a club.

Balotelli: the manager bragged he would have a real go at bringing the best out of him. That has long since gone. When other managers despair and throw up their hands, it is for a reason. Bravado and blind faith are no substitute for making the right call with advice.

I have supported the team since the early 70s but the past decade has been empty and promising much only to fail every year. I see no reason for this to change. Blind faith is no way to press on. We are no longer great but just a big club. We are as big as Arsenal and Chelsea and more glorious than City and Spurs and a step below United. Our history is our undoing - we rely on telling people we have 5 European Cups as they buy smartly, win consistently and smile at us. Wake up!

Calm down. Do a handstand for as long as possible 🙆

2.) 27 Apr 2015 17:03:57
I still think Lovren will come good as long as he is partnered with Sakho rather than Skrtel. Not sure he will ever be worth what we paid for him but he will come good next season i'm sure of that. Agree that Balo and Lambert were very poor signings but the rest like Markovic, lallana, Moreno and Can will come good as long as we get in a proper manager who brings out the best in them.

"We also go on about him wasting 200 million, well that isn't exactly true, if i am being pedantic then you would have to work out market value for the players now and then work out what has been wasted. I do agree that some of the transfers have been poor, and money has been wasted, i also know that most of the fans were pleased with the signings at the start of the season."

Whilst this makes sense in terms of 'wasting cash' it fails to appreciate that the waste is not in terms of the actual cash, more than waste of it in pursuing players who can do the job. We may spend £200 million and finish fifth, sell players to make back the £200 million - but it still leaves us fifth!

"We need more patience" - really?
We've been patient for 24 years!
This is the problem with LFC: it's always about NEXT season when "things will be be better if we buy this and that player."
We have SPENT close to £388 million in seven years and had a sniff at ONE title.
We are where we are because we live on past glories.
