if we could get at least 2 players with more quality than we have in an attacking midfield and left back/wing. Then I'm sure we would be pretty much qualifiers for champions league. IMO

My 2 would be Fernando and salah. I know we haven't got Chelsea/city money.

Only a few weeks left and then the summer rumours can start.

What is going on with M.Salah?. His friend Mohammed zaki said he was 99% sure to join Liverpool and also his ex coach Bradley saying he is going to join a big premier league club in the next few days. Are we really interested in getting this wonder kid?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

IMO we can't afford him. It isn't good that we are not bringing in the targets BR is identifying that he wants. (Happens a lot these days over the windows) But, tying down Suarez was more important than bringing in any player

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2014 21:27:15
Now I know its silly season.
I thought Kalou was bad. I thought Torres would be the daftest suggestion of this window.
BUT a website has suggested that Pedro from Barcalona will be coming to Anfield before the end of the window. And even more ridiculous have us favorite's to pull the deal off.
Maybe they will let us have him on loan with option to buy over the next 10 years with a €150 mill buyout clause in his contract. LOL.

Edd001, disappointed, I loved jamie Carrargher but you mentioned a certain javier zanetti a long time ago and the man has been a truly wonderful player all his career. He is a truly wonderful fullback and one of my favourites

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Zanetti is one of the greatest ever players but Carra is from down the road and is a good lad, that edges it for me!}

14 Jan 2014 18:29:46
Ed001 I've got a question for you, I appreciate your insight into the team so if all of our defenders were fully fit what do you think our strongest defence would be?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Kelly, Toure, Sakho, Enrique would probably be the best we have. I love Agger but he lacks pace and strength.}

Aggers organisation and reading of the game is first rate though Ed - think Toure has been suspect recently (though definitely not helped by Skrtel partnering him) - surely we should give a Sakho/Agger partnership a go before writing Agger off? I agree that Agger isn't the best in the air/strength wise but I don't think his pace is a big issue (as it isn't for most good defenders who can read the game well).

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - his pace is an issue if you want to play a pressing game, which I would like us to do.}

I would say press from midfield and let the centre. Pressing from the back is what's causing skrtel to leave his post imo. It's okay with smaller teams but the negredo goal is prime example of skrtel being carried away leaving his post behind him.

Arsenal don't defend too badly if you see their record with mertesacker and koncielny its surprising how much mertesacker positioning helps the team. I think aggers intelligence and sakhos presence combined needs to be tried considering we've seen literally every other combo

Agree0 Disagree0

How can you press from midfield and not from the back? That will leave a lot of space for the opposing attackers to play with. Arsenal at the minute are pressing at the right times but still are susceptible against the bigger teams due to merty sitting so deep to accommodate his lack of pace. I think sakho has done enough to merit starting and at the moment in a toss up between agger and kolo i'm edging towards kolo I guess.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Skrtel doesn't press anyway, so I have no idea what he was talking about. Skrtel drops off, constantly, without giving a shout to his defensive partner, so we lose our shape and create gaps for opponents to run into without going offside.}

15 Jan 2014 12:04:00
NO we have literlally NOT seen every other combo.

Since we signed Sakho I know Toure and Sakho would be the best partnership no single doubt about it.

we have played

Toure-Skrtel-Sakho
Skrtel-Sakho
Skrtel-Agger
Toure-Agger
Skrtel-Toure

Skrtel is the reason we keep leaking goals. I honestly don't know what BR is thinking, he has no Bravery what so ever, he keeps backing off and off so the opponents have picken there spot, got ready to shoot and scored before he puts in a pathetic challenge. so what he has scored 2 goals? he has 3 own goals, that means he litterally has -1 goal for us this season.
He is NOT good enough, and we will not stop leaking goals until Skrtel is dropped to the bench.

Agger is good, but we leak goals with him in the team from set-pieces and crosses, in my opinion sell Both and replace them with NONE. We have Kelly, Ilori and Wisdom who all will be much much better CB's in a couple of seasons.

Agree0 Disagree0

I totally agree with you. He's not good enough. Maybe he's considering changing his name by deed poll from Skrtel to Shirtel!

know it is a bit late but cannot believe the FIFA team of the year! How have Xavi, Iniesta, Alvez and Ramos made it into the team!? All of them got taken apart by the german sides in the champions league and by brazil (except alvez) in the internationals! Alaba should have gotten left back, dante for CB, Kross with reus or gundogan for CM, and zlatan probs gets it for his international goals. and RVP/Bale's injuries and Saurez's suspension. Just think the German sides, especially Bayern should have had more players as they dominated Europe

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2014 22:00:06
My team is nueur
Lahm t.silva Ramos alaba
Iniesta. Sweinsteiger ribery
Messi Suarez/ibra. Ronaldo
Can't really choose between ibra and Suarez but congrats to Ronaldo he deserved it

Agree0 Disagree0

Injuries don't matter with regard to this, otherwise Messi wouldn't have made it in either. Peoplem pick it on fond memories of the players they remembered being good. I'd have had gundongan and Goetze in there myself. Ribery I was astounded got into the top 11 for me Robben is the winger at Bayern that defenders fear and back off from.

My first post here!

Quick questions,

1. When players high profile hand in transfer request, does really cost them financially if they end leave their team to go to another?

2. What price do Basel quote Liverpool for Salah?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - (1) How would you define "high profile"? (2) We don't discuss finances as it confuses most fans.}

14 Jan 2014 18:44:50
Hi eds,
would appreciate it v. much if you answered. Hearing reports we are interested in Mathieu Valbuena. Hear he wants a change of 'scenery'. I take it this is not true but it would be great if you could come back to me.
thanks!

Hi Ed's just wondering is there any truth to the rumour surrounding a move for villa's Fabian Delphi? Thank you

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Assuming this is not Twitter, perhaps Liverpool want to buy Delphi to screen the "This Are Liverpool" or whatever the documentary is called. Delphi with outlets across the country seems like a fine solution.}

14 Jan 2014 17:52:13
So here is what has happened so far this window starting with you no who yes salah been going on since before the window apparently he was on the verge of a move which wasn't true we haven't agreed a fee for him yet don't think we will get him this window tbh (tello wanted him on loan not going to happen (m'vila again that was a loan offer which got rejected why not just make an offer but hey this is what we do (yarmolenko apparently we are again interested in him but let's be honest if we are we will only offer to take him on loan (wijnaldum he's a new 1dont no how serious our interest is but nothing will probably come of it anyway (montoya dunno what's happening there is he signing a new contract is what it comes down to (rakitic again doesn't look like it's going to happen as he wants to stay in spain. So in summary it doesn't look like we are going to sign anybody oh well here's hoping to still being in the 4 top come the end of the season

14 Jan 2014 19:14:40
Just one observation with what you have written.
From what I understand on the Salah transfer (sorry Ed02 I know you hate this subject) and where everyone has fallen on this subject is that personal terms were agreed with LFC, the agent and player and this is were the confusion came from.
Everything was/still is in place but there is no agreement between the clubs as to a fee. If this can be breeched (Basle looking for €18 mill LFC propose €10 mill + €2 mill in add ons.
I still think a deal can be reached as the player wants to come but its going to be a case of who caves in first.

Silly season is here. a web site reports we are looking to sign Adam Johnson from Sunderland for £14 million! One good game and he is a world beater and worth that! Given other players we have been linked with for less money ok perhaps swap with Borini but otherwise no thanks! I think journalists like to play fantasy football this time of year!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

14 Jan 2014 16:02:16
I've always liked a.Johnson, good left foot which are hard to come around, although don't think he's worth £14M. Would be a great last 30mins sub, but he won't come for that.

Agree0 Disagree0

Has all the ability to be great, needs to get the attitude.
If he gets himself sorted he can be anything he wants

Agree0 Disagree0

He's too fond of the Beer and can't hold his drink either. I think this rumour is from 2008!

Agree0 Disagree0

Definately silly season if you believe half what you read on some of these websites, these rather pants players are coming.
Saloman Kalou
Danny Ings
Guy Demel
Adam Johnson
Ashley Cole
Thankfully most internet "journos" make things up so none of these players will be coming thankfully, mainly because BR does actually know what he's doing(though I've still a bit of a gripe about bringing Moses and loaning Assaidi, I think long term we'll gain because Assaidi can turn it on against good teams and on a cold night in Stoke, so benefit of doubt given!).
At the end of the day we do need a winger and a centre midfielder as that's where we are light.

Edd001 and edd002, who in your opinion is a better footballer, messi or ronaldo? Imo messi is one of the greats.of the game and is underwhelmed at how truly phenomenal.a.player the boy is. Ronaldo is a great specimen but messi is a genious who in my eyes doesn't truly get appreciated by those in football players coaches'

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - Ronaldo is a more complete player, but Messi is better at what he does. It depends on what you like in a player as to who is better I think.}

Messi underappreciated?!?!?!?!?

Is this all because he didn't get a 5th Ballon D'or, he incidentally didn't deserve?

Agree0 Disagree0

It pains me to say it but I think Ronaldo is better. Messi couldn't do what he does in England, whereas Ronaldo already has. EPL too physical for Messi imo.

Agree0 Disagree0

Doesn't get appreciated? Sepp Blatter said Messi is his favourite. He has won the ballon D'or 4 times on the trot. He's waxed lyrical about everytime he's on the pitch. I'd say he's plenty appreciated.

Agree0 Disagree0

As someone once said Ronaldo is the best in the world but Messi is the best of the Planets.

For me it's Messi - when he's fit he scores more than anyone along with an unbelievable range of goals. Time will tell whether he has peaked.

Agree0 Disagree0

Edd001 who's been your favourite player anywere in the last ten years? Thanks

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - it has to be Jamie Carragher. I couldn't pick anyone else as my favourite, even though I know he was not the best I loved his attitude, desire and will to win.}

For me Ronaldo is more complete, it pains me to say but I enjoy watching him play more, his Ballon d'or is fully deserved and he should have had 1 more. If you are designing footballers, he is the specimen.
Personally whilst I enjoy watching Messi, I can't help but think that help from certain doctors when he was young played a helping hand with injuries/fitness. or should that be on the conspiracy page?

Agree0 Disagree0

How can anyone say messi wouldn't do it in the PL he done it against every British team he played like in the CL Ronaldo was better this time that's why he won messi won it 4 years in a row for a reason

I think we can all agree our main problem is our defense. I personally would (barring injuries which we've been unlucky with) pick a back 4 and just play with it as much as possible until the end of the season so that they can bed into a cohesive unit. my personal preference would be
Johnson. Toure/Agger. Sakho. Enrique when fit

Possibly take out Johnson for Flanagan when he's back as we can all agree Johnson looks poor.

I don't see the fuss with playing two left footed cbs I mean two right footed center backs play together and are successful all the time so is left footed seen as a handicap in this position? I'm sure it comes down to tackling with your strong foot but then you should have the same problem with two right footed players?.

Eds (preferably 01), Reds your thoughts

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - apart from Johnson, I would agree. I would prefer to see someone else given that position, either Flanno or Kelly, or the guy in the club shop who puts the numbers on the back of the shirt even. He would at least look like he was making an effort, rather than wasting a major talent with a lack of application and focus.}

ED001 bang on!

Agree0 Disagree0

Thing is though Ed's, I fully agree but there is a reason why he gets picked every week! Wonder what it is? Any ideas?

This weekend could be very good for the current top 4. We face Aston Villa at home whilst Arsenal entertain Fulham and the unstoppable home form of City looks to give Solsjkaer a baptism of fire! Chelsea have a slightly tougher home fixture against Man United, but they usually dispose of mid table teams at home fairly easily. However the pack of teams chasing the top 4 will be lucky to record one win between them!
Everton must travel to the Hawthorns which is a tough place to come away with 3 points, whilst Tottenham face Swansea at the liberty stadium in what will be a well fought game. Man United as previously mentioned will likely fall further off the pace nad even Newcastle and Southampton have tough away trips to West Brom and Sunderland respectively.

If Liverpool can maintain their imperious home form then the gap between 4th and 5th looks set to be extended. This is a great chance for us to pull away from the pack with home games at Aston Villa and their closest chaser Everton in the next couple of weeks.

Rogers on Ilori, he is 6' 3" super quick, power and can jump but needs to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.
Why send him to Spain, why not offer him out to the premiership, surely one of them would like a Portuguese U21 international CB in their defence.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

So he's super quick but can't adapt to the pace?

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed, a season at Stoke could do the trick!

Agree0 Disagree0

Mk, he means the pace of play, how quickly mistakes are pounced on, how quickly the ball is shifted around the pitch etc. Not how fast the players are.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2014 11:51:43
There is a big difference from pace & acceleration, and the intencity and the powerful running in the PL where you almost get bullied while running.

Ilori has huge potentional, but he will need this half of a season on loan and probably the whole of next season as well. He needs 50 starts at CB at least in better leagues than the Portugese league where he will meet good attacking players week in and week out. There are 4 good teams in Portugal and he had only started 10 games or so for Sporting. One for the future, but the problem is we as fans are so short sighted and really can't have hindsight or a long-term vision of what the club are planning for the future.

Agree0 Disagree0

Totally agree with the premier league shout. Look at Assaidi and Suso for example. Both light weight and had to adapt to our league too, Assaidi is doing that,,, whereas Suso (although he's tearing up Spain) will still struggle physically when he comes back

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2014 12:24:38
Aside from Porto, Benfica, Lisbon and to some extent Braga, the portuguese league (IN MY OPINION, as I got ripped to shreds for this last time) is a weak league. I know that it is ranked high by Uefa but that is down to the performance of these 4 teams in European competition, not the overall strength of the league. I agree with the unnamed poster on this one. Ilori needs time on the pitch in his preferred role in a strong league. Ignore Uefa ranking etc. The top 5 leagues in the world are England, Germany, Spain, Italy and France (in terms of overall strength). I personally would rather he went on loan to a team in the Premier League so he can not only get game time against tough opposition week in week out, but also adapt to English football in the process. Ilori does not have a problem with pace or acceleration though and is very suited to the Premier League. He just needs game time. Maybe a loan to West Ham would be beneficial for him. they are stuggling for centre backs right now and if there is anything Allardyce can teach a player, it is how to defend! However they would need to even be interested in him.

YNWAdam

Agree0 Disagree0

I would have to disagree. I think any first team football in a top league will do him the world of good. I mean you don't meet Stoke every week and football in the Epl isn't anywhere near as physical as it used to be. I just hope that whoever he goes to he actually gets first team action against seasoned pros and not sit on the bench. That is the most important part.

Agree0 Disagree0

If it's the pace of the game he needs to learn YNWA Adam, he'd never learn that in spain or Italy either. He'd be better in Dutch football or german

Agree0 Disagree0

He needs to go to weak prem team that does all the defending in most games. Stoke/westham/fulham/cardiff/sunderland/palace would be great for him. then when in our formation of keep ball it will seem like a luxury too him, yet will have the experience of knowing what to do when it gets tough!

Agree0 Disagree0

Id loan him to Palace, let Tony Pullis put a bit of the ******* and toughness in his game. We'd get a player who can get the English game and play with a bit of finesse!

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2014 10:25:10
One thing after the weekend that really surprised me was Mark Hughes' comments about the penalty. He said that the Liverpool fans behind the goal helped convince the referee to award the kick (as well as Sterling going down easily) and that he couldn't see the referee being similarly influenced by Stoke fans at the other end.
Do Managers actually think before they make such protestations? To suggest that away fans should shout for a penalty? What is the game coming to? LFC fans you ought to be ashamed of yourselves, how could you do such a thing? I thought that the home fans at the Britannia Stadium are supposed to be some of the loudest in the Premier League. Does he now see this as a disadvantage and by having quiet fans the referee would be a little more sympathetic?
Why can't managers just be more realistic? Stoke didn't really do enough to win, were unlucky with an own goal and a penalty that could have gone either way. 3-3 would have been hard on Liverpool but because of their careless defending could have been the outcome. Hughes using the away supporters reactions as one of the reasons for the game changing into a defeat is a bit desperate.

hi eds good job you are doing here a lot of patience needed with us lot I would say this month.

i think we are in a position now that the players we want are more likely to get better offers at clubs that have more money, the list of clubs with more revenue has been getting bigger the last couple of years let's face it no cl.brendan said he wants someone to come in and improve r first 11 now the way we r playing r scouting network would need to pull a diamond of a player outa somewhere r we are going to spend a large sum on 1 r 2, personally I would love to spend big on a cm, if gerrard is going to be used as a defensive mid someone with a bit of a threat going forward maybe cabaye 20m they r looking, but lucas as an attacking mid is not going to fire us into the top 4 imo.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi tommy,

agreed we will struggle to attract the "top top" players but splurging 20mil will not guarantee you a class act. people who can come and improve the first team does not mean you have to spend big. sturridge being a key example and couts to a certain extent. aquillani being another example of 20mil not paying off. not having a go, just playing devils advocate

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Jan 2014 16:12:08
i know what your saying money dosent guarantee a good signing but that's how much newcastle r reportedly looking for cabaye and for me that's the player that we need, with his experience with premier league football in a team maybe not as good as ours I could only see him being a success.

Jerome Sinclair, Jack Dunn, Jordan Ibe and Seyi Ojo are the best strikers in our accademy. Ibe and Dunn are the most firat team ready although they are still a couple of years away from Regulars. Morgan like you say didn't cut it, Ngoo looks very average and Yesil would appear to be ridiculously injury prone. If Yesil could stay fit, I think he'd be a regular on the bench by know, but he is just a sick note waiting to happen. Two major injuries in 18months is not good.

Jerome Sinclair, Sergi Canos.

I am afraid Samed Yesil has had 2 massive injuries and he
was already to slow for the system we play.
We need really quick strikers, or a Genius like Suarez.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jerome sinclair is very similar to Sturridge from what I've seen (obviously not at his level yet but same kind of player) so I reckon he could fit straight in if needed (maybe next cup game?)

If it wasnt for his injuries I also think Yesil wouild be regular on bench now.

Seems though that now Rodgers has same tactical/ formation based appraoch throughout the the academy etc should make it easier for players to progress up the ranks should it not?

Agree0 Disagree0

Are Yesills injuries the same thing?
Cheers.

morning eds have you ever heard of a website called inagist isit a bit like twitter and should we not take notice of what it says

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - a bit like twitter? It is a twitter app, it just picks out tweets that get retweeted, for example, to try and show you the tweets it considers 'relevant'. No more than a lame attempt at making twitter useful for anything other than abusing 'celebs'.}

Ok thanks for that I'll be staying well clear of that then also is there any chance of jorginho or m'vila seeing a lot of stuff about them could be good backup for Gerrard and a good alternative to salah which seeks dead in the water now

When Sakho is fit I would definitely play Toure&Sakho in central defence. Toure is a leader great player and Sakho is brilliant in my opinion.
Remember Carragher taking Skrtels place for the second half of the last season? I think Brendan should do same with Toure, the best defensive player in the team.
Opinions?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I agree Wez, was thinking the same myself. Toure has a few seasons easily left in him aswell.

Also with Villa at home I think we should give Smith a crack at LB.

Agree0 Disagree0

The best defender we have is Flanno. The rest are letting us down, scoring for fun at the top end, conceding bucket loads at the back

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree, I've been wanting that partnership for most of the season. I don't think skrtel is good enough to be an automatic first choice.

Then again, Brendan watches them in training so he must have his reasons.

Agree0 Disagree0

Toure was not great againsty Stoke and, after a bright start to the season, has dipped in performance. I don't see why Agger and Sakho cannot be tried as a centre back pairing - they've been our 2 best centre backs this season, they should be tried out together.

Agree0 Disagree0

Both speak french that may also help

Agree0 Disagree0

Just to illustrate a point, if we had a back four of Zaballeta, Agger, Sako and Kolarov we would win the league. Johnsons sh**e, Skrtel shows little composure on the ball and Enrique can't get off the treatment bench.Quality wingbacks are a must.The rest of the squad is excellent if you include the possible additions of Ibe, Suso, Texiera and a quality and experienced defensive midfielder!

Agree0 Disagree0

Don't know about kolarov mate. would prefer Enrique myself!. I don't know why but toures form to me of late has been questionable and there has to be some reason Brendan isn't starting him as much as skrtle!. Eds could you shed your input as to why/why you think brendan seems to prefer skrtle over toure?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Toure was out injured, when he came back from injury, he had lost his place and has not had a chance to get back in regularly since.}

Evening Eds,
Just wondering whether Liverpool held any interest in Luis Gustavo. Reports saying he is unhappy at his new club but who knows. Also with Salah looking less likely will there be more interest in yarmonlenko? And sticking with ukraine players do we have any interest in konoplyanka? and finally, have it on a good source m'villa deal will be done sometime this week. Do you have any idea if we have interest in any fullbacks and who might they be as cissokho is doing a decent job but johnson looks competely lost everytime on the field. I don't think central defense is of any concern, surely eventually one of the many partnerships BR has tried will click. Perhaps Skrtl will move on but in the summer and then we can bring another defender. Sorry for the many questions but just wanted to squeeze everything into the post. So any answers eds?

{Ed002's Note - There is no interest from Liverpool in Gustavo or Konoplyanka.}

Cissoko is a nightmare. I cannot wait for his loan to expire

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'm sure that's just what he needs. I think he's done relatively ok at filling the role that was needed. What a supporter!

Agree0 Disagree0

Cissoko and Moses both.

We need to hire whoever is arranging the loans in the blue half. Because they have it figured out.

Agree0 Disagree0

Agreed he's not the best, but he is happy and trying his best for the team. What more can you ask?

Agree0 Disagree0

Hes just not that bad. jeewizz!

Agree0 Disagree0

Aprt from his yellow card at the weekend he didn't make many mistakes not as many as johnson

Agree0 Disagree0

He hasn't been that bad, has had to adapt to a new country/city/football system/league in a short space of time. He hasn't been Roberto Carlos but he hasn't been Djimi Traore either - give the lad a chance, at least he looks like he wants to win and is putting effort in.

Hopefully we sign him permenantly so you live the 'nightmare' for 5 more seasons, he hasn't been bad at all apart from the arsenal game. I guess the whining bitches will have anything to whine about, if Johnson scored and assisted in a game the abuse would go to gerrard, and then cissokho and allen and skrtel and so on and so on,
Liverpool most def have some of the worst supporters on the face of earth and a club like LFC deserve the best, even supporters.

Agree0 Disagree0

Give the guy a break, he's settling in and was ok at the weekend, given time I think he could be ok as he is trying and working hard his commitment is good and doesn't go hiding. It's not the same as Moses who for whatever reason isn't performing.

Hi eds I have heard that martinez had attended a work permit for fernando of porto during the summer. Does this mean that they had a fee agreed and personal terms. I know recently that eu citizenship has been awarded which would make a transfer easier. Is he highly rated.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - They had agreed a fee with Porto.}
