Hi eds have we held discussions with Eto'o reps?

Believable1 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - I have been travelling today so I don't know if Liverpool are talking to him or his folk or not. Obviously if the ground is accessible it has to be a viable option.}

Yeah we can ask occupational health to go and fit some rails up the steps and some easy access baths like they advertise in the back of the newspaper. He will definitely never walk alone

Agree3 Disagree0

I think Eto'o would be a decent move in all honesty. Not the supporters or Liverpool's first choice (clearly) but if they feel like they have exhausted their options this window for an proven striker within reasonable or realistic price/wage combo then why not. it leaves us to perhaps address it at a later stage with a half or full season of proper consulting to target the striker best suited for us. Although I would like Borini to stay on and be given a chance if we do bring in Eto'o, neither he or Lambi are spring chickens.

Agree7 Disagree7

In some funny and strange way, I wouldn`t mind Eto`o at all simply because IMO, we are in a position of "beggars cannot be choosers". We are reaching desperation stage and and any decent striker we go for leaves us with NO leverage during negotiations and we will get fleeced because we will look desperate. People want us to sign a striker ASAP but if you ask who, they cannot tell you about someone who is accessible to us RIGHT NOW. Falcao, Lavezzi, Reus, Cavani and maybe Bony AREN`T coming so get over it. If Eto`o is there and ready to play a role in helping us win (and also give Maureen the business when we play Chelsea which I would love), and doesn`t cost that much on a short-term deal, then take the chance. I`d rather have Eto`o, Studge and Lambert than Studge and Lambert. We cannot go into a season w/ only Studge and Lambert because we will be asking for trouble. We need a body who can score goals and Eto`o showed he could score goals last night (a tasty finish v Arsenal and a hatrick against Utd). If we want him, then pull the trigger and give him a good month to get him fit before the games start coming thick and fast. He will be a short-term solution until maybe Jan when we can revisit the issue. Just my honest opinion.

Agree1 Disagree1

Honestly don't see how Eto'o is any better than the older striker named Lambert we already signed? Be a bit of a kick in the teeth of Rickie if we signed a guy on even higher wages who's even older than him.

Agree4 Disagree0

I would play Borini over Eto all day, every day.

Haych

Mate, exhausted?. We had litreally 2 months to being in a LB and Top quality Striker. Its completly different from the Torres situation.

Agree2 Disagree0

So, Ed. In your opinion, is sarcasm the lowest form of wit or the most intelligent? lol

{Ed002's Note - I don't know what sarcasm is.}

I've got a few question which I hope you guys could help me with.
Me my partner my little brother and mum (She's driving and she can't resist men in shorts)
Where planning to head up to Liverpool for the Chelsea game, 8TH of November.
I was just wondering which is the best way to obtain tickets and when would they be on sale.
I know you won't be able too know exact dates but from previous sales I was just wondering if any one knows.
Yes. This is my first Game and visit too Anfield.
But I'm just as much as a fan than the rest.

I did go too Liverpool on NYE (the one just gone)
But had too many drinks the night before and slept through too only catch the second half on my phone. (Devastated)
Btw I'm 22 so I've still got plenty of time to go.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Tickets have sold out and you will have to buy off touts. For 4 people this will cost you a fortune for such a high profile game. Your better off waiting for next phase of ticket releases later this year (along with the rest of us!) as everyone I know missed out on tickets this half of the season and it is being raised by the supporters club when they meet with the club later this month.

Agree1 Disagree0

Really wouldn't hold your breath on getting a ticket for the Chelsea match unless you have very deep pockets and are willing to pay a fortune from a tout. Expecting to get a ticket for any of the big games at Anfield is overly optimistic. Set your sights lower for your first game mate, you'll have more chance of it becoming reality.

Rumours around about LFC now looking to bid for Rojo as the boring Moreno saga is dragging on. The publicity shy Spanish Dave Whelan says deals nowhere near.

Is the Rojo interest genuine? Is it just stirring up an option so Sevilla fold and accept our offer, as it seems no one else in Europe is interested in Moreno?

Believable3 Unbelievable0

Personally I would prefer rojo to come. A full international with a good world cup behind him.

11 Aug 2014 22:57:42
siiiiggh, really hope Liverpool aren't in for eto . I understand d need for a striker . but he's a mercenary and about 40

Believable5 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - A little nearer 46.}

You find me another 46 year old who scored a hatrick vs united and is as quick as eto'O then I'll be very suprised!

Agree2 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - Obviously if the ground is accessible it has to be a viable option.}

11 Aug 2014 23:48:04
Joking aside, how old is he Really. There must be a record of his first games for u21s etc?

Agree0 Disagree0

He is actually 982.

He made his debut at "the Battle of" Stamford Bridge in an international between England and Norway in 1066.

His performance was described as deadly, especially his speed and agressive style.

Agree8 Disagree0

Maybe we could chop a leg off and count the rings?

Agree6 Disagree0

12 Aug 2014 01:59:14
No need to chop a leg off just count the wrinkles on his forehead

Agree1 Disagree0

Well you have to remember that the was 985 when he last starred as Yoda in the final Star Wars film.

Agree1 Disagree0

12 Aug 2014 08:13:55
Ed002, You think Eto is 46, how old is Didier Drogba? Eto'o still scores more goals than even strikers younger than him.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Eto'o is now 47.}

For a 4th striker can't we go for wickham at Sunderland reckon given chance and experience could turn out to be a bargain

Believable1 Unbelievable10

Hi to all the EDS and fellow REDS

Need a striker!
Really?
Yes, really!
Stating the obvious?
Yes, want to make sure transfer committee hear me.

So much nonsense is printed out there, don't know who to believe. Moreno, Lavazzi, Cavani, Bony!

Please Brendan, do the deals and let us get on with the season. But, please, please, we don't need another defender, don't you think?
In Brendan we trust,
YNWA

P.S.
Interesting all experts (except Cara) have us finishing 5th, just can't wait for us rubbing their noses in it, AGAIN! Mind you, it's only an opinion, so let's not get too upset!

Believable5 Unbelievable1

11 Aug 2014 23:37:10
I wonder did most of these experts predict utd to win the league last year .and as Brendan said we weren't even in the conversation last year, looks like they are saying we had no European football last year plus we had one of the best players in the world which is a valid argument .I will be more confident if we bring in a good striker that falcao loan sounds good let's get him send Ian asap.

11 Aug 2014 21:05:48
Cavani rumors are heating up again eds. Apparently positive talks were held with Cavani's representative over the weekend and they are meeting tomorrow to discuss a bid being made. Are you aware of this, can you conform or have you more information? Do you think a deal is possible?

Really looking forward to the game on Sunday; hoping we come out of the blocks quickly and show the pundits who are writing our top 4 chances off already that they're wrong not to consider us.

Players out:

Hoping Assadi now takes Stoke's offer as they've gone for someone else; it would suit all parties.

I'm surprised no one has come in for Coates; neither Italian or a new promoted team; all be it friendlies he has looked more assured than he did (aka against Oldham).

Not sure what will happen with Borini; he could ask for a £5m release clause if relegated with Sunderland. I just don't see him outing our wingers or scoring enough for us as a main striker - happy to be proved wrong though.

In some ways I'm hoping we can get a decent fee for Skrtel; that ship may have sailed though; his transfer fee would help towards a new striker though.

I'm happy with the squad; and can see we are there or thereabouts not just for this season but future ones as well (still need that Striker and left Back though - but still 3 weeks to the window closes).

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Think it's a shame to want rid of Assidi and Borini when we are looking at wingers and strikers. We have two who've proven last season they can both score and assist in the prem. They've never been given the chance and were both bought by the current manager?

Agree5 Disagree3

{Ed002's Note - Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.}

Sorry ECD but I think everyone here believes Assaidi's home lies elsewhere, if you look at our squad that explains why. However in the case of Borini I agree, personally I would much rather he get a chance as our second striker than Eto'o, although I am not so sure of the legitimacy of the link.

Agree2 Disagree0

12 Aug 2014 09:34:32
Ed002 has knocked it on the head; I do not dislike either player it just doesn't always work out (see Paletta - Argentinian defender looked awful for us but played for Italy in the world cup).

Assidi has too many players infront of him so will not get game time - for both sakes why keep him.

Borini was an italian international when he joined; seems to play for us and then get injured. I love his commitment and workrate as well as his movement but I just don't see it working out. Who knows he may join Sunderland and with regular game time get back in the Italian squad and fair play to hm if that happens.

We can't stockpile players and IMO we are overloaded with C Defenders and people who can play in the A Midfield role that Borini would occupy more than as a striker.

Agree0 Disagree0

Paletta may have played for Italy in the World Cup but still looked bloody awful. I think him playing for Italy said more about the poor state of Italian football, than Liverpool's judgement on whether a player is good enough or not!

Ricky lambert scored two goals in a 2-1 behind doors friendly today against burnley, apparently Ibe could have scored 5 goals but his finishing let him down.

Believable10 Unbelievable1

Looks like we have some potential there in Ibe . pretty sure the finishing will come

Agree7 Disagree3

Happy for Lambo. `Hope this will help his confidence.

The more I think about what an esteemed regular poster (apologies, I forget who) said on this site at the weekend, the more I realise that Suarez has ALREADY been replaced. It makes perfect sense!

Suarez's replacement is. 'The Boy' Raheem.

This is why B-Rod has primarily bought midfield/winger cover.

The Boy will play in midfield until Studge gets injured/needs a rest, whereby The Boy will step up to lone striker. There are plenty of midfielders to fill the void. The same goes if Raheem needs a rest.

To play two up front there's Lambert.

Believable2 Unbelievable16

11 Aug 2014 20:18:30
I can't remember too many 5 feet 7 inch main strikers down the years at Anfield . Older readers will remember Sammy Lee , perhaps we should have asked him to play centre forward .

Sturridge started 26 League games last season , he was substituted in 13 of them . We now have Champion's League as well , and we don't have Suarez to play centrally when Sturridge is absent .

Daniel Sturridge is a fantastic player , give him a break , sign another striker!

Agree13 Disagree0

What is B-Rod and a studge?

Agree8 Disagree0

Fowler and Owen weren't exactly big guys was they!

Agree4 Disagree5

Fowler wasn't the biggest but he was strong as an ox and skillful.

Agree3 Disagree0

I was going to say wasnt owen 5.8 but alan had all ready mentioned him but keegan was arround 5.8 too

Agree2 Disagree0

Owen taller than Sterling, but not by much. I think he would be amazing running behind defenders, but he's much better when he can be in a more creative role, running with the ball across midfield w/ Coutinho.

We could play him there (if necessary) w/ Markovic, Coutinho, Lallana behind and I think it would work. Prefer Lambert or Borini w/ Coutinho behind and leave Sterling where he is.

Best possible squad (w/out injuries) played on Sunday. Lallana and Markovic will both stake a claim for regular first team football when fit, as will Allen, Sakho, Flanagan and possibly Borini.

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 22:40:53
I have thought all along that BR is counting on Sterling scoring 20 goals this saxon, and there's nothing that says he won't. If you improve the defense (and really, it couldn't be much worse), losing a net 20 goals might not be a tremendous drop off from a results perspective. Isn't it funny that the same pundits who talked about how Luis never scored against the top 6 teams are now saying we don't have a chance without him?

Agree1 Disagree0

King Kenny was similar

Agree0 Disagree0

Studge just about passable, only because I think it's used in the squad, but B-Rod? Ffs let's not start that sh*t

Agree5 Disagree0

Just Sussed why 4 disagrees to Fowler and Owen not being big guys. dopey, grumpy, sleepy and sneezy have just registered.

Agree1 Disagree1

Not Liverpool related, maradonna was 5ft 4 and look how good he was!

Agree0 Disagree2

You don't need height in your armoury to be a prem striker. Look at how raheem turned kompany inside out last year.

I don't remember Suarez scoring too many with his head anyway. It's not our style.

If you want tall we should resign Crouchy? Or Carroll?

Agree0 Disagree0

12 Aug 2014 08:34:23
Was me mate, glad you agree.

And for the obvious comparison in current world football re: height, Messi is 5ft6.

Agree1 Disagree0

Sign sammy lee, least he is younger than eto'o!

Agree0 Disagree0

Height means nothing unless you play Sam Allardyce football!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 18:13:14
Eds I read on a site that Stoke were attempting to sign Yarmalenko for 8 million. It was from the express the article can you confirm whether this is roughly the region his club are willing to let him go for this summer?

Gotta say if he is available to Stoke for 8 million we should go for him and the strikerronlem is solved.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

{Ed002's Note - Just ignore the money. and Yarmolenko is not a striker.}

11 Aug 2014 17:54:13
Struggle to see why people are suggesting we sell Lucas! He's the only out and out defensive midfielder we have. On too if this, if we play a tough opposition, I would think we may start with 3 deeper midfielders, for example gerrard can and hendo. That leaves only Allen to come on if Lucas goes. Lallana is a good player but doesn't play in the deeper role as well as the others. Furthermore, if one if the players got injured, we'd have no senior midfielders on the bench

Believable7 Unbelievable3

Lucas is massively underestimated. In the 12 half yesterday there were numerous occasions where Dortmund had players running into the hole in front of the back four. Gerrard mght still be able to ping the ball about but he can't stop those kind of attacks. In the 2nd half when Lucaa came on the defence was barely troubled

Agree3 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 16:57:03
I can't believe this Moreno situation is still going on, it's getting ridiculous now. Surely if he is gon to join us after the supercup game to or row then why have his club come out and said there is no deal in place and he will remain with Sevilla. Ffs.

We should move onto someone else.

Believable1 Unbelievable7

11 Aug 2014 17:20:58
There might be 1000 reasons for the president to come out and say this.

Agree1 Disagree2

11 Aug 2014 18:20:57
Dez, if the player still wants to come, then we shouldn't let it go. As I said in an earlier post, we're buying the player, not the club or their president.

Agree4 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 16:53:08
I just wondered if BR has ever considered Dagger as a LB? I miss the days of seeing him do dangerous things with his awesome left foot and even if he is not going to be getting up and down in the same way as some players he would be dangerous in the last third putting balls in and he loves the club. I don't see why he can't adapt his game to fill a position we seem to be struggling to do.

Believable0 Unbelievable21

Hi
Even I am a huge fan of agger but I don't think he has pace to play there my opinion but if he leaves I will feel very bad I will feel more bad than when Suarez left he is a true Liverpool player and a great human beings
Ynwa

Agree19 Disagree0

I'd like to see him as a defensive midfield cover. He is defensively minded, can pick a pass, excellent reader of the game, and would be comfortable dropping between two centre halves playing 4-3-3

Agree4 Disagree7

11 Aug 2014 20:21:40
I'm with everyone that feels agger has been loyal, loves Liverpool and has Been a great servant. But the truth is as much as it pains me to say it, he's slow, isn't a commanding presence and never lasts a full season. Granted he's graceful on the ball and has a sweet left foot but he'd never fit our style of play. I'm afraid the writing's been on the wall for ages

Agree6 Disagree0

I am really happy with the fees we got our 2 centre backs for considering the market this year. Sakho @ £16.7m + Lovren @ £20m is still about £7m less than the fee City paid for Mangala and PSG paid for David Luiz (circa £44m).

Believable7 Unbelievable0

Sakho was keeping Mangala out of the French team during the World Cup, being a year older (exactly a year as well, both being born on Feb 13th - spooky!) and half the price. Not bad.

Agree7 Disagree0

Let's hope that Mangala will not keep Sakho out of the French squad now that he signed for ManC.

Its an article from the Anfield Index, do you write for them slaphead? Good read. They do plenty of statistical based analysis, one of the most interesting football websites.

Have to say am watching a clip on Coutinho vs BVB. He was terrific, but my fav has to be the Henderson goal. Excellent team play from the boys. can't wait to see what Lallana and Markovic will add. Its a scary thought for any opposition trust me. We look fierce and very sharp up front.

Even had my gooner/Manc guyz appreciating the goal.
I think DS was allowed to keep playing even after it out went so the ref could see how the move ends. What a cool finish from Hendo too.

Best of all Loved how evryone doesn't go off, alone to celebrate but acknowledges his team mates. Proper team spirit.
Well done BR (B-Rod) just had to add that in.

Eds, surely this cannot be true?! The BBC are reporting that Premier League clubs will now start using Football Manager (yes, the game) to help recruit players. Kind of ironic after all the 'go back to playing your football manager game' posts!

Believable7 Unbelievable0

I know there are still a number of fans who question the effectiveness Ian Ayre.

Well, let me give you a recent example. Sakho captained France in Brazil and was 23 when we bought him last year. We paid £18m.

Mangala couldn't even force his way into the French first 11 for Brazil 14, is also 23 years old and has just been bought for £32m by City.

Essentially, Ayre and his team have brought in 2 first choice defenders for only £6m more than City have paid for one.

I think Ayre does get unnecessary criticism. We have to work to a tight budget until we have continued success and participation the CL to help swell the coffers.

I'm happy with how we do business.

Believable24 Unbelievable0

11 Aug 2014 14:26:31
Is that you Ian? ;0)

Agree13 Disagree0

He also hasn't signed the left back we've all been craving

Agree3 Disagree4

Lets not forget that when City go in for players, the price is always inflated. I think that Ayre in the past has wasted time in, for example, flying to Spain to finalise the Moreno deal 5/6 times this summer. Compared to a year ago, he has improved though.

Agree3 Disagree0

Yeah fair play to that one and others. I'd say it's like 60/40 in favour of Ayre

Not bringing in a striker that first window for Rodgers. The Konoplaynka (however it's spelt) drama. Again that window missing targets.

This window, the Moreno saga. And we'll see at the end of August about a striker.

Still, like I say, he has more hits then misses

Agree1 Disagree0

I take the points about the players, but IF (and I am guessing here) Ayre is told of the player, and is given a budget by the club, then you can't really blame him over the lack of a specific player coming in. If he's told "Get Moreno but don't pay any more than £14m" then I would imagine that he is unlikely to be able to dip into his back pocket and pull out another £2m to satisfy Seville!

Do agree that prices tend to be inflated for City and Chelsea, but hey, we are the team that paid £35m for Carroll and £20m for Downing, so I imagine the 'other side' in negotiations will try to take the mick with us as well!

Liverpool for the title. With or without a new striker. Seeing our attack against Dortmund, the front three were untouchable, and still got markovic and lallana to come! Sturridge for 20+ goals, coutinho for 10, sterling 15+, Henderson 10. With others chipping in aswell. Out defence is sound, well done Rodgers. Only problem being if Sturridge gets injured, then a new striker would be needed. But c'mon let's go one better!

Believable4 Unbelievable12

I think if we sign Bony and Moreno, and Henderson, Coutinho and Sterling get around 10 goals each, we will be in for a great season.

Agree3 Disagree0

That was a very average BD team we played yesterday who had players missing. One swallow don't make it summer my friend. We still need a striker to help studge out when he's injured or just generally tired.

Agree5 Disagree1

11 Aug 2014 15:11:40
Suarezgumsheild

They were missing some players. But the quality of our goals were brilliant. Especially the 3rd goal and 1st goal.

Agree3 Disagree1

4th goal Harry
The build up was exceptional
Quick one and two touch at its best

Agree3 Disagree1

That Dortmund team (w/out Reus, Hummels, Sahin, etc.) is still a top 8 club at worst. Southampton would not have been able to handle Sunday's performance. I say we would have beaten United handily w/ Sturridge, Lovren (and Manquillo) and the pitch, and we should have beaten City in regular time.

I would be pleased w/ a clean sheet versus Southampton (3), a draw at City (1) and a win at Tottenham (3). That I've come to expect those results shows what I think of our roster. Only need a striker/wing forward and a left back (if Moreno isn't coming, and the striker we want isn't available, I'd honestly say we're alright w/ what we got.)

Agree0 Disagree1

Dortmund would have liked to have played Hummels and Subotic in the middle of defence, but let's not ignore the fact Sokratis still played the majority of last season (due to other's injuries) and so is still a player worthy of first team football. That puts 3 of their defence as first team players; Schmelzer, Piszczek

The rest of the pitch saw Mhkitaryan, Pe Aub, Kehl and the new signing Ramos (who scored 16 goals last year for Hertha Berlin) play, who are all worthy of a starting berth. Jojic also was bought in January.

While the team missed many stars, the two defenders, Weidenfeller, Sahin, Bender and Gundogan, and Reus upfront, it was still a decent team. Considering Subotic has been recovery from an injury last season and Gundogan and Reus too were injured, it would not be too different from what would be their strongest line up at the moment.

Nice attitude from Skrtel. Let's hope all the rest of the squad think like this, even stevie. it really is about the squad this year. Hope all the guys with us now stay and dig in and work hard for the club even if they don't play intially :)

"Dejan Lovren had great season with Southampton and I am really happy that he is with us, " he told his official website.

"We all need competition because that is what keeps you motivated. He will make us stronger, so I really welcome his arrival - and it will only make me work harder.

"Liverpool is not only about 11 players. We will have many games this season, so every player will be important."

Eds, the post, 'can Liverpool afford a top striker' made excellent reading. Can I just say thanks to slaphead for giving the time and effort to do that, much appreciated.
It's good to get an insight into the financial workings of top football club. I had no idea the transfer fee was spread over the contract.
If you haven't read the article yet, I implore you to do so. And there was me thinking Falcao and Cavani were beyond Liverpool!

Believable5 Unbelievable0

Afternoon Eds and Reds,

I have also read that post, it is an excellent read and a real eye opener on how contracts and finances work over a period of time. I had no idea that is how it worked.

Great read Slaphead! Thank You!

Hi Stuie boy
just to clarify I did not do it personally but got it from a Liverpool website.
Does make interesting reading though.

Agree0 Disagree0

They probably are beyond Liverpool. I still think we need to establish ourselves in the Champions League before we start getting the Falcao's of the world. There is of course the geographical issue that Sanchez had when proposed a move to Liverpool. The article does however prove that these players are not beyond us financially. High wages may do the trick, but would go against what Rodgers wants to achieve. This is only my opinion.

We may have witnessed our new centre back partnership yesterday. Lovren and maybe in a couple of years Gerrard!
Gerrard was great again yesterday and I can see him dropping even deeper in the future
He headed clear most of their corners, he's as big as Carra was, if not bigger, his aggression, experience and distribution would be ideal for the role
I still think he has a good couple of years in the DM position (I know you disagree Harry/Boom)

Believable8 Unbelievable14

BR has expressed that he sees Gerrard in that role in the near future. IMO Probably as backup and a leader

Agree2 Disagree5

11 Aug 2014 12:06:55
Nothing against Gerrard and never ever would I dare to be against my all time fav. player
He was good to watch yesterday, The long 55 yards diagonal ball to pick Sterling was pure class.
I would have loved us to sign one DM With Lucas future hung in the air and Can looking more like a B2B player.
The Real issue would be the team which would press us in the middle. Gerrard is not a strong tackler and he struggles positionally.
He is an excellent reader of the game and he sprays passes with ease. He would be brilliant with 3 at the back like Pirlo for Juventus.

Agree10 Disagree1

In a few years your just going to have to let go mate

Agree6 Disagree3

Have to say, I 100% disagree. Gerrard has 2 years left in the holding role and then he'd be doing himself a favour by retiring and taking a coaching role at the club.

Gerrard's technique and passing range make him a lethal weapon even from in our own half or from set pieces alone. However off the ball he is still a liability far too often. I doubted whether he could adjust and to some extent he proved me wrong. He might not be the perfect, composed enforcer like Alonso, Martinez, Schweinsteiger etc. but he brings something different to the role and that is aggression, leadership and an attacking mentality.

When he has two athletic players in front of him (Hendo, Can, Allen, Lallana) I think he will be fine. He struggles whenever somebody like Lucas plays ahead of him though because it increases the amount of running he has to do and he get's caught out of position due to a lack of discipline. We have enough options for the more dynamic roles now though so if Henderson is banned or Allen is injured, we don't have to play Lucas and Coutinho in front of him and completely expose him.

Putting him in centre back will just expose him even more and only serve to demolish his incredible reputation. He should be remembered as the greatest player in modern history and maybe in Liverpool's entire history. Not as the average centre back who could occassionally ping a 70 yard pass.

Let him lead the side for 2 more seasons and then give the armband to Lovren/Hendo and let him retire. We cannot cling onto him forever as it will only hurt him and the club. He will be fine for now rotating with Lucas though and hopefully Chivarella and/or Rossiter is ready in 2 years to start playing regularly.

As a closing point, it would be unfair on the likes of Sakho, Wisdom, Kelly, Ilori, Loyd Jones and Rafa Paez if they all end up shipped out because we continued to try and shoe horn an attaking midfielder into a defensive position.

If you love something, let it go.

So looking at the transfer activities of our rivals I believe Chelsea will be the ones to beat to capture the title. They have improved their scoring weakness from last year and with that tough midfield and defence they will again be tough to break down.
We were very one dimensional against them at the end of last season and at the time I cried out for a stronger forward to give us another option in situations like this (many here didn't agree). I think in Lambert we have that other option though.
My question to the tactical ones out there is how do we take points off Chelsea this season?

Believable2 Unbelievable1

We take points off Chelsea by using the width.

That is why we need quality attacking fullbacks and wingers that can get in behind and fizz the ball into the box.

United dominated for years with that style and City have become more accustomed to it nowadays.

Manquillo looks like he will be a good signing in that respect and we know Moreno very good going forward.

Red Rum

Agree0 Disagree0

I personally think costa is a double edged sword.
He looked good last year, but he had 1 year where he scored a substantial amount of goals, other seasons he's averaged less than 10.Although he was behind falcao, and had some on and off field issues

A good striker, but yet not guaranteed to fill that void left by Drogba. He looked terrible for spain playing a different system.

Overall I think at £32 million he's a gamble when you're banking on 1 striker, with Torres warming the pine.

He'll be relying a lot on his chelsea team mates to provide.

Agree1 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 11:43:47
By scoring more goals than they do.

Agree0 Disagree0

We could play them at their own game, ''hopefully now we have the defence to do it'', alternatively we could employ a bit of the old ariel bombardment, get the big men putting a bit of stick about, Chelsea tend to concede a lot of free kicks, big Ricky, Lovren and Skrtel will lap up Stevie G's in/out swingers all day!

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Aug 2014 12:10:51
Mcgoveb

What would happen If costa gets injured?.Thats a real question.I would be surprised if Chelsea don't get another striker.
They are not scoring at will in pre-season. But they are very tough to break. Chelsea struggled yesterday, they were poor against werder bremen.

The team to look for is Arsenal. If all of their players reach to theri potential and has an injury free campaign, they would walk away with the title.

Ozil, Sanchez, Ramsy, Carzola, Rosicky, Walcott, Oxlde chamberlin. that's some midfield and attackers.

Agree5 Disagree1

Let down the tyres on their bus

Agree1 Disagree0

No Howard Webb will help at Stamford bridge.

Agree3 Disagree0

Basically, we've got to get a decent ref for the game at Stamford Bridge with the bottle to send a Chelsea player off when they rake their studs down our players legs. Then at Anfield we have just got to have Henderson avaiable and hope Gerrard doesn't fall over. Simples.

They fluked both results against us last season by playing dirty and boring football. Next year, we will have a better defence, a far more dynamic midfield and hopefully better penetration in the wider areas so we don't just repeatedly try and burst through the middle of in behind which is impossible against "park the bus" sides.

In all seriousness, I see Chelsea fighting it out with United for 4th with Liverpool, Arsenal and City in the race for the title. Chelsea are over rated and the loss of Lampard cannot be under estimated.

Agree7 Disagree3

Why are you giving up even before its started?
Stop this negativity.
I think with more depth in the squad we have more to offer from the bench and will be up there or thereabouts.
We have enough fire power upfront and have reinforced the back line.
I am certain the midfield players will contribute more goals this season.
Feel the force- be Positive.

I agree with your post. With the way their pre-season has gone till now and if no more transfer comes in, They are not going to win the title.

Arsenal has a very good chance at the title. I could also see City struggling this year. They had almost an entire squad apart from Kompany and they were comprehensively beaten by Arsenal.

Yeah that turn where he does a 180 and dinks the ball up and over the attackers leg? Yeah I'm pretty sure he took that from Suarez, it's an excellent trick to be fair and very effective. I enjoyed the performance yesterday, some of the passing was sublime. The only real worrying thing I noticed was that quite often we left big gaps behind the defence on both flanks.
Fortunately Dortmund did not expose this but teams like City, Arsenal etc have the players to cause us big problems.
I am sure it is something that Brendan Rogers noticed and will address, I certainly hope so.
Apart from that, great game, great result and here's to a great season, I will be watching every minute.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Even though we played well, and its hard to be negative after a 4-0 win, I thought the defense looked exposed, and luckily Lovren had an amazing game to deal with this.

I lost count of the amount of times mkhitaryan recieved the ball on the half turn in the space between midfield and the back 4.
Straight away they were running at the CB's and a full strength Dortmund, or top english team would make us pay for that.

Having seen this rumour start about Bony/Allen -start first hand, by some fan mouthing off at Jason McAteer and Aldo on the post match phone in on LFC TV. I am amazed how much this 'speculative effort' -at best- spread all over the internet. I cringed when he said it on TV and I cringe when I see the amount of people who 'believe' it.

Mainly due to the complete disregard and mud slinging aimed at Joe Allen. A player who puts on a red shirt every week and puts %100 into it.
When he first came in, we were struggling to adapt to BR's system and Allen was a player that aleady knew his methods and helped our teams transistion. He was and is a apart of a squad that should have won the title last year and took the Premier league by the scruff of the neck.
While he doesn't score goals or mark up many assists, it's his work off the ball that allows our forward players their freedom, and gives SG time on the ball in his new position. He is a great, contributing squad player and should be respected as such.

If Allen were to leave, I hope he goes somewhere were the supporters appreciate his efforts.
And if Bony does come in the same supporters don't heap the pressure and abuse on Bony that have Allen, and Rickie Lambert, who has only put on a red shirt about 4 times.
Get a grip people, you are embarrassing.

So one thing I haven't seen any1 else mention mainly because the rest of the team performed so well, as well as him not having much saving to do, but mignolets distribution was clearly another bonus out of yesterdays friendly ( I believe he had close to 100% pass accuracy ). It was the one department that I really felt he was lacking last year but there are signs of improvement! Now let's work on his authority in the box!

Believable11 Unbelievable4

I must of been watching a different game. 100%?
Not likely.
His distribution is a real worry especially when he goes long or wide.
No problem when passing to his backs which at 20 feet at the most anyone can do.
Im still not thrilled about him being our number one

So everyone's writing us off this season already, we can look forward to a 5th or 6th place finish! The main excuse being now we are in the champions league it'll be a lot harder for us, now this is a genuine question what was the last team to win the league whilst not being in the CL that season? Was it Chelsea? And how long ago was that! Also I am I fan of Icardi but from a distance. I'm hoping Moreno is finalised this week! Also would love to sign Bony and konoyaplanka to finish it off that would be an awesome squad and not overly expensive, to much to ask for?

I really hope we aren't going to go for Mauro Icardi especially for the price that is been thrown around, looking at his scoring stats they're awfully similar to Borini' at the same age when he was in the Serie A. I know its obviously stupid to compare the two as I haven't really seen a lot of Icardi but I just think that for 20 odd million what's the point when we already have Borini who could arguably be more effective right away? Anyway rant over haha, would like to here some of your views on the potential Icardi move.

May I just say in regards to emre can, people are complimenting him and comparing him to alonso, I personally don't think he's a alonso player if you watch him play he's a young raw talented copy of bastian schweinsteiger. I'm quite Suprised bayern Munich let him go maybe they were hoping he would still be a levekuson when bastian retired, but I am very impressed with the youngster.

Now I'm not being pessimistic about the skrtl lovren partnership, but neither have great pace which I find quite worrying a lot of the problems last year were against faster front lines, I.e Swansea when we won 3 2, city and even Chelsea at anfield. I really think lovren needs to play with sakho or agger and I truely believe they will compliment each other.

alright guys and any girls that pop in the site!
dya reckon that we will play the same starting 11 against Southampton? the only change I think we may see would be allen in for can? Although I'd prefer can to start as he is a more physical presence and does basically the same job as allen but with maybe a wee bit more authority! I also think the system worked well today. It seemed like we was playing a 4-4-1-1 formation today with sterling and Henderson the wider players and coutinho closer to sturridge. anyway whatever formation we play our players like to interchange and that's what makes us so difficult to play against because you don't know whos gunner pop up where or which position someone maybe playing! sorry for the long winded post i'm a tad bit drunk (went the game nd carried on drinking til i'm in now) i'm just really excited about the season. I know people are writing us off already but I really think we can do one better and win it this season! YNWA P.S. what a class act the Dortmund fans was clapping Gerrard and paying tribute to the greatest player I've ever watched! (only 21 haha)

With the season only a week away, I was just wondering how everyone's pre-season football watching is going. Is everyone feeling at peak sharpness to be able to watch 6+ games a weekend, along with games during the week, or do you think it will take a few weeks to get back to where you were? Did you suffer any setbacks by watching the Commonwealth Games? Personally, I watched 2 games this weekend, along with a number of highlight videos of players and matches over the last month or so. Feeling better every day.

The 4am kickoff for the BVB friendly was a cruel early test for me. Clearly need to work on my coffee making and alarm setting in order to have them sorted prior to season start.
