Ed001. Seen as it’s his bday, how do you rank Aldo in our long line of great strikers?
Underrated across the board, but certainly not from us Liverpool fans. Great player and seems like a nice guy too.

{Ed001's Note - he was incredible but not at the club long enough.}

Hello LiverpoolFC8, I could have put a birthday card through his front door for you as he lives quite close to me, obviously the eds won't allow me to say where because of security issues etc, but when i was walking for the papers year's ago one very early Sunday Morning (7.00am) i passed his house on route and found a wallet outside his driveway with money and debit cards (the cards had letter "J" on them so could of been John's or his Wife who i know has same first initial "J", so i posted the wallet through the door straight away, so he/ she didn't have to cancel them.

I saw John a few weeks later in a local supermarket we both use and told him i had posted financial items through his letter box and he "thanked me", they must of dropped on the floor of his driveway when they both returned home early hours, as there are many large trees outside the property.

He also said i was lucky as the very gruesome Alsatian Dog that he has, and i see him walking regularly to the local woods, was locked up inside the house, instead of roaming the grounds of his property (will be handing them into the Police Station if i ever find them again! )

Luckily I wasn't the "Milk Tray" and on second thoughts won't be posting any birthday cards LFC8!

I actually think it was a mistake bringing Rushie back and dropping Aldo in 89, that’s how good he was and we were in 87-89.

That post made me think of Peter Beardsley…

We’ve always loved a clever little footballer in the team pulling the strings (Keegan, Dalglish, Alonso, Thiago) and Beardsley was part of that line for me.

Interested what you think 007?

Got me thinking about Ray Houghton too. Never the best in the world but a cracking player for Liverpool. Digger, Beardsley, Aldridge and Houghton. Barnes was world class and the rest were, at worst, very very good but together they were brilliant. It’s easy to forget when we’ve had so many gifted players but as an attacking combination they weren’t far off the best.

Hello Pompey Red!, "horses for courses" is Mr Klopp's motto unfortunately? not like us "two" and Kenny, who favoured the subtle "Will of the Wisp" kind of player?

That was a fabulous team.

John Barnes wouldve made any side look good. He was a phenom even after his injury. And did it all despite the racist crap that came his way - I remember a friend having to explain to me what the banana skin on the pitch meant because Id grown up in a multicultural town and was clueless. His reaction to it all just made me respect him all the more.

In that squad in 87 we also had Brucie, Lawro (last season I think) ;Jocky, Stan Staunton, Steve Nichol, Ronnie Whelan, Kenny, to name a few - the more I think about them the more I feel privileged having seen them ‘kick a ball about’.

Kmos, one game that stays long in my memory. Some team for sure, my favourite.

Real shame we never got to see them in Europe. Have to think they’d have won it at least once albeit defence was creaking so Milan may have been too strong.

One of the Forest players who played in that 5-0 game grew up across the roasd from me. I'm going to ask him about it one day.

That 5-0 v forest was a joy to watch, poetry in motion. Forest I think where 2nd in table at time (could be wrong on that, but they v strong at time)

That 87-90 team was a marvel. I think towards the end we seemed to struggle defensively and didn’t replace Lawrenson or Hanson adequately. I wasn’t the biggest Houghton fan but he was the Dirk Kuyt of that era - a workhorse and always put a shift in without being particularly dynamic.

I met him a few times while working in a restaurant in Cork. A very sound fella each time. No airs or graces.
