Should Liverpool not simply say to Sterling, hand in a transfer request or go on tour with the rest of the squad?

would this not be the sensible position to take?

The whole saga has left a sour taste from both sides but if he doesn't see a future at liverpool then so be it, put your cards on table and everyone moves on. No need to spew hatred, players leave clubs all the time and are bar a few exceptions always replaceable.

{Ed030's Note - Sterling will have the option to buy out his contract next year. If Liverpool take this approach it may end up costing them an awful lot of money. }

As much as I could gather from the Eds, the offer is thee on the table from city and its about the payment structure.
After today, I expect the clubs to workout on the deal.

Sterling and Ward have all the Cards and are calling the shots, making the club look stupid. If it was me I'd call their bluff on buying out his contract next year. I would only let him play with the U21's , it will massively affect his chances of being selected for the Euro's, he will have had 6 months or whatever without first team football so could affect his development. No player is bigger than the club we should show this for once. I know we'd lose money but long term for the good of football shouldn't let Ward get his way.

Ed030, I've read on here about Webster's rule and respect what you guys refer to about potential loss of money. My question is, how many players (apart from Webster) have used Webster's rule? I understand that one player did try to force his move, he was found to be in breach of contract and his new club and he were ordered to pay substantial compensation to his previous club. As the Webster rule goes back to 2006, I would have thought we would have seen a few more instances of this type of transfer.

{Ed030's Note - It has been invoked a few times, I remember vaguely something regarding Zaragoza and Doneskt however I am not sure if anything ended up happening with regards to the webster ruling nor do I know how many players have went through this road. }
