Hi eds,
I'm sure you're sick of being asked about potential new managers after yesterday's result, but I've seen that Marcelo Bielsa is apparently expected to leave Marseille at the end of the season. I know we benefited a lot from his input last season so might we look at bringing him in to replace Brendan Rodgers should the club decide to part ways with him?
Again, I'm really sorry as I know you must have been bombarded with questions about the managerial position over the last 24 hours. Any response would very much be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
YNWA

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - not in the thinking, we had our chance to get him and his lack of English ruled him out of the job.}

1.) 20 Apr 2015 20:46:03
Ed1 are you convinced that there will we will change manager in the summer? If so is it as clear cut as when city got rid of Mancini which you eds called very early?

{Ed001's Note - I fully expect him to be replaced. He has been on borrowed time for a while now.}

07 Mar 2014 05:56:31
Hi Eds, do we hold any interest in Kasper Schmeicel? Seems a decent keeper and I think he'd be a far better option as back up than Brad Jones. He's out of contract with Leicester this summer so maybe worth having a look. Thanks in advance.
YNWA

oweng1

{Ed002's Note - No, and he is not going to want to move somewhere that he will have to sit on the bench. If Leicester manage to get promotion then I suspect he will get a new deal with them.}

18 Feb 2014 00:09:59
Eds, I'm sure it's probably a no, but are we interested in Swansea's Ben Davies? I know we're looking at a left-back, but I'm also aware that he'll probably have an inflated price tag, being young and British! Thanks for all the great work you guys have done!
YNWA

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - nope, he is not very well rated, last I heard. Rodgers was not keen on his laziness getting back I was told. Having made a point to watch him, after being told that, I can see why, he really doesn't make much effort to track back after getting forward.}

07 Feb 2014 22:29:34
Hi eds, rumours going round today that Chelsea have made Suarez their top target for the summer, any truth?

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - not that I am aware of.}

01 Feb 2014 00:10:01
Hey eds,
ssn say that the deal for Kono is off, whereas the BBC say that we have an extra hour because it's an international deal. I doubt that we'll sign him either way but are the BBC correct?
Thanks for all the terrific work you guys have done throughout the transfer window by the way!

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - they were both correct, we did have an hour to submit the paperwork but the deal is off.}

Question for Ed001 about our competition if not our actual team!
You've maintained that to beat a Pep Guardiola team to a league title the first thing to do is to keep paceel for the first half of the season as they have a tendency to slip up every now and again in the latter stages. Do you still think this is true as they don't have anything to be complacent about heading into the new year potentially in 3rd (and guaranteed no higher than 2nd)? I was also wondering if this recent bad patch (if two games can really constitute a patch) may be down to Pep trying to preserve fitness levels so that such a second-half slump doesn't happen this season (in a similar way to Klopp only now starting to allow the Gergenpress to come back into play)? Would be interested in your (and anyone else's) thoughts but know you're very busy at the moment so no pressure!
Thanks!

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - they have been fading early this season, that is all. I am sure they will rally later, but right now they are in their slump. They have been playing poorly for a few weeks now and it has finally caught them out. They could only ride their luck for so long. We just need to get a buffer over them while they are struggling as I am sure they will play better. Pep doesn't drop intensity at any point, which is why they have a tendency to fade, as it becomes too much for the players. He is constantly looking over their shoulder pointing out what they are doing wrong. He micromanages them and it becomes tiresome. No one likes someone constantly niggling at everything they do.}

1.) 27 Dec 2018 06:25:16
Its also down to other teams seeing sense and recognising that City can be beaten if u have a go at them. Teams will no longer sit back and allow them to dictate play. Their defense is average imo and crumbles anytime oppositions take the game to them. Not to mention their slump coincides with David Silva's injury layoff. City have a big battle replacing him in the coming seasons. He has been their best player since the Sheikh's takeover, and probably in their entire history.

2.) 27 Dec 2018 09:04:24
Hi eds1
TH are second at the min and look brilliant. Do you think moving to there new stadium half way through there season will put them off are help them on?

{Ed001's Note - what makes you think they will move?}

3.) 27 Dec 2018 09:15:00
Ohh right
I thought they would be moving in January sometime from what I’d read.

{Ed002's Note - February will likely see the first game there. But it is a really impressive stadium.}

4.) 27 Dec 2018 10:46:55
City don’t look the same with Fernandinho out. It’s also good to see teams now just park the bus. Leicester are a good counter attacking team admittedly, but it shows when you have a go, you can get at them.

Question for Ed001!
A few weeks ago there was some talk about the legacy of Michael Owen at Liverpool, which led to comparisons with Robbie Fowler. Unsurprisingly, the latter is held in much higher esteem. I seem to recall that it was said that one of the main reasons Fowler ended up leaving Liverpool was due to Owen not wanting to have him around (apologies if I'm misremembering! ), but I've also read that it was in part due to a spat between Fowler and Phil Thompson? Would it be possible to shed some light on which is true (if not both) and what could have been done differently (despite dropping in performance levels later in his career, I do feel the loss of Fowler is still seen as being one that happened too soon)?
Thanks!

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - Owen told Ged Houllier that he hated playing alongside Fowler and only wanted to play with Heskey so Houllier got together with Thommo to orchestrate an argument to give him an excuse to offload him.}

1.) 07 Sep 2018 17:14:25
Bladdy hell.

I would say that that shouldn't ruin Owens legacy, for the main reason as that's just shocking management.

The fact Fowler was practically forced to leave is down to houllier.

No-one likes eachother, are our squad really all round eachother having dinner every night? I'm sure there not all bessies. Torres use to get slack because he didn't lik3 th3 night life with th3 boys

If mane asked klopp yo sell firmino, or anyone I'm certain there would b3 team building, relegation ship fixes or just a f off and deal with it before mane got what he wanted.

2.) 07 Sep 2018 17:29:17
I know what you mean Kloppsboss but “relegation ship fixes” made me laugh out loud. I’m sure Zed has a witty come back for that.

3.) 07 Sep 2018 19:13:09
Thanks for the response Ed! Quite surprising as Houllier had always been made out to be the loving father-figure/ top man-manager (especially in relation to Rafa) . Just a shame it all got so ugly!

{Ed001's Note - he was far from a loving father figure. He was a very domineering man.}

4.) 07 Sep 2018 19:18:07
Ah that seems to fit a bit more in the context of the situation! I think I'd gotten that impression from Steven Gerrard's autobiography about 10 years ago! Thank goodness we moved onto Rafa by the sounds of it!

5.) 07 Sep 2018 19:29:13
Ged was a snake and would NEVER take the blame for his own issues. He did the same when he blamed France's failure to make the 1994 WC on David Ginola not keeping the ball at the corner flag in the last game vs Bulgaria (which they lost in added time) . He is also now getting his comeupance from ex-Lyon legend Sidney Govou on the dreadful things he did while he was their manager. Again, the guy is a true snake and I don't have any more time for him.

6.) 08 Sep 2018 14:20:22
Houllier won us a stack of trophies. he's alright in my book.

7.) 08 Sep 2018 19:48:18
Mine too RedLorryYellowLorry 🤝

His job was to win trophies, he succeeded to a large degree. He wasn’t perfect but he didn’t do anything to disgrace the club like some who get more respect - Suarez, Mascherano. Gerrard charged with affray, admitting tapping up players, Firmino drink driving, Mo Salah using his phone whilst driving, Carra spitting at a kid.

No-one is perfect, Ged did his best for the club and was successful 👍.

8.) 12 Sep 2018 20:23:51
That does not remove from the fact that he was a snake and did the things he did whether at LFC or Lyon on purpose and made it look like it was someone else's fault. I don't care if he won trophies nor do I care if Suarez nearly won us the PL or SG was a great player for us or Mascherano disgraced the club. All of them were still did HORRIBLE things and they should be called out for their deeds. Them winning trophies for us is irrelevant cos we are talking about their conduct, not how many things they won.

14 Apr 2018 23:47:27
Question for Ed001 if possible. What do you think Roma's mindset will be with regard to the Champions League draw? It was put forward that they might instead have their focus on prioritizing the league instead as they're currently very tightly contesting with Lazio for 4th, and I've also seen it suggested they are determined to finish in the top 4 as they need the prize money for FFP reasons (this was suggested on ESPN I think? I was only half listening and I'm sceptical of pundits' knowledge in any case) . Do you buy into any of this and do you think this might play into their approach to the tie?

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - they do want top 4 but this is huge for them and it will be their main focus. They have never won this trophy, the fans and club as a whole desperately want to win it. They will be 100% focused on it.}

1.) 15 Apr 2018 07:51:41
Surely any team in the semi-finals of Europeans premier competition is going to be completely focused on it? This is the pinnacle of domestic football, I doubt Roma are going to be distracted in any way.

2.) 15 Apr 2018 08:04:46
Roma would definitely be 100% focused on the Champions League. I think what the OP was referring to is that they are in a tough 3-way battle to secure CL football next season. Lazio, Roma and Inter have the same number of points.

Roma can't afford to rest/ rotate players or drop their intensity in their league games whereas we can do so as we have a considerable lead over 5th placed Chelsea.

It might seem as though we have a slight advantage in this but I don't think it's going to make a huge difference. going to be a cracking CL tie, I can't wait!

3.) 15 Apr 2018 09:20:58
Not to mention they been wanting to pay us back since winning it there.

Hi eds,
Trivial question for you really, with rumours that Brendan Rodgers might return to England with Arsenal in the near future (not that I personally put much faith, if any, in baseless paper talk), I was just wondering what you're thoughts on his capabilities as a manager are now, nearly three years on from his sacking? It's clear he's done (at least domestically) a great job at Celtic, but frankly I'd expect most half decent managers to be able to do that! Do you think he's really "Britain's best manager" (again, just quoting from third parties! ), or has the hype around his Celtic tenure distracted from legitimate failings as a manager? Obviously I know this is all trivial, but recent rumours had got me thinking, and if you have time to give and opinion it would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

oweng1

{Ed0333's Note - he’s not even Scotland’s best manager so how can he be Britain’s best manager? Don’t believe the gravitas he’s a very good coach and not a super manager. If arsenal appoint him they’ll rue the day.

1.) 07 Mar 2018 02:29:32
He's from Northern Ireland and lives and works in Scotland. How does that make him Britain's best?

2.) 07 Mar 2018 02:32:35
Sorry ed- just saw your reply, so I'd better explain: Britain is England and Wales. The UK is England, Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland.

ps would love to see him at Arsenal. The debate re his 'success' getting 2nd in the prem being down to him or Suarez is still debatable. The only way to tell if he's any good will be if he comes back to the prem. The proof will be in the pudding!

{Ed0333's Note - from what I can gather him getting us second place was due to Suarez having a point to prove and Biesla instructing him to play a certain way. The season after we came second we played the most impotent football I’ve seen since Hodgson. I just don’t rate the guy he went up to Scotland to restablish his reputation which he has done but he’s not a top 6 team manager in England. I don’t think spurs, Man City, Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool fans would want him anywhere near their club. He would be a great fit at Everton mind.

3.) 07 Mar 2018 02:48:43
I think any manager would do a decent job at Celtic, they are the league. It's hardly a test been a Celtic manager lol I don't mind Arsenal to be honest, I hope for their sake they don't go down that route, but probably nonsense, surely they aren't that daft.

{Ed0333's Note - I would love Rogers at Arsenal. Their would be thousands of WENGER IN banners within weeks all over the Emirates stadium.

4.) 07 Mar 2018 02:58:43
If you are talking Scottish football then with no rangers, celtic are going to win every time. If they didn't then he could possibly be the worst manager in the World. I could manage celtic to the title. My father was from Aberdeen and they are the only team that has ever really interrupted celtic and rangers winning the league every year. With rangers not what they were, of course celtic win the league. With Aberdeen the only team that is even a remote threat. I actually thought he was alright. Nearly won us the league. Did really, who could of predicted that slip. Breaks my heart every time I think of it. Made some poor signings but made some good ones too. I've got no problem with the Brodge. I actually think he will be good for arsenal. I respect Wenger, could have gone to any club. They all wanted him (he could have gone, failed and slipped into mediocrity) but he stayed with arsenal. It was his connection to that amazing France team that made them the invincibles. They have never really done much since, should of won European Cup. With my head, Wenger should have moved on years ago, I do like a team that keeps their manger long term, but once it goes flat, it's like a relationship, that sparkle has gone from their eyes and its never the same again. Sometimes you keep trying but it's a farce, face reality and find something new and exciting. With my heart I feel sorry for him. Like a captain going down with his ship. The players are soaking that bad vibe and they're not playing for him. They have some top top players, some World class strikers, midfielders. Where are they?

5.) 07 Mar 2018 03:02:13
If he comes back to the prem he will definitely be the manger with the brightest teeth. Forget manager person with the brightest teeth. Bobby won’t be happy.

6.) 07 Mar 2018 07:10:55
Credit where credit's due, he was expected to dominate with Celtic but he raised the bar last season with just what that meant.

7.) 07 Mar 2018 08:17:34
Playing devils advocate, isn’t Britain England, Wales and Scotland and the UK basically Britain + Northen Ireland?

8.) 07 Mar 2018 08:47:57
He had a great season in 13/ 14 and rightly should be praised for that, but the way he reshaped the side when Suarez left was a bad joke - why did he try to completely change the style of play (eg Benteke) rather than simply replacing Suarez with a similar style player and continuing the momentum and free flowing attacking play? That was 100% down to him and he deserves the criticism for the turgid football that followed and the likes of the results against Stoke as much as he deserved the plaudits for the year before.

People can learn from their mistakes but it’s hard to judge if he’s learnt yet or not simply by results in Scotland. I would hope for their sake Arsenal would go for a more proven manager.

9.) 07 Mar 2018 09:27:00
Arsenal job is a poisoned chalice as Wenger has been there so long. It will be similar to Moyes after Fergie left.

Bad move for Brendan.

10.) 07 Mar 2018 10:19:58
I don't know Ron, it's rare for a UK manager to be offered the bigger jobs in the PL. Rodgers has pretty much achieved all that can be expected in Scotland, if he's ambitious then he'd be crazy to turn down Arsenal. It might be his one chance to redeem himself after Liverpool.

11.) 07 Mar 2018 11:19:43
Agree with Ron on this one, the Arsenal job is a tough one for whoever takes over after Wenger.
I think Rodgers best move could be abroad; didn't he learn Spanish I seem to remember?

12.) 07 Mar 2018 12:26:22
Agreed SG, people can learn from their mistake. The problem with bodgers was he didn’t think he made any mistakes. He blamed everything else ( most of all the players he bought) and took zero responsibility.

13.) 07 Mar 2018 12:58:24
If Arsenal get BR, they are welcome to him, his pathetic comments in the media, his arrogance, and oh btw, the fact that nothing is ever his fault just like Wenger. BR is a crap manager and got found out for the incompetent manager he is (Scottish league is a non starter) when LS left. Compare that to Klopp who when Cou, our proverbial best player (patently false, btw), many thought we would struggle and yet here we are, fighting for 2nd. That is what differenciates a top manager and one who plays one on TV and of course, in Scotland.

Hi Eds,
Firstly, a huge thank you on all your hard work over what has proven to be a long and arduous transfer window- it's appreciated as ever, particularly with two of the most frustrating and long-winded transfer sagas seen for some time!
Additionally, I had hoped to ask about two ongoing in-house matters if any of you have time.
Firstly, I believe it was ED002 (though my memory may serve me incorrectly there! ) who pointed out the change in Jurgen Klopp's approach to press conferences in recent months, from light-hearted clowning to a more serious and frustrated tone. Would you be able to explain why such a change has taken place? I have noticed a less charming presence, and now I know it's not just me imagining things, I'd love to understand why?
Secondly, I believe two ex-players have come out to show support for Mamadou Sakho's "case" (if you can even call it that) to play for the club again. I've no doubt that his days are numbered at Liverpool, but I'd hoped to gauge your opinion on whether you think the treatment of him is entirely fair? Obviously his behvaiour before his exile from the first team was well documented as being inappropriate, but since then (bar one social media-related slip on Snapchat- albeit a large one), I've read only praise with regard to his attitude and determination to work hard. Whilst a return to the first team set up is unlikely at best, if you were in the manager's seat, would you return him to the fold?
Thank you so much in advance, and I hope I'm not walking on already well-trodden ground (even I, as a reader, get frustrated at the repetition of the same questions and would hate to be guilty of this as well! ) .
All the best!

oweng1

{Ed001's Note - Klopp is stressed, the English league is not a fun place to be, very few managers who are there for long come out of it unchanged. Jose was a smiley happy guy when he first arrived, now look at him. Conte is showing signs of the stress getting to him and he won the league last season! The pressure they are under is immense. Too much media attention as well. It is tiring for them.

Sakho is very good at playing the victim, when it was his own constant problems that caused the issue. He needs to go. He is a brat who will not change, just say the right things, then continue being an arse.}

1.) 09 Aug 2017 07:02:44
I think its about Klopp to get angry and frustrated. I have always said he is too jolly, he needs to get angry through a fit and get 200 percent performance from his players. i donot think our players at all fear our manager. he should through bottles hit chairs when our defenders do comedy goals, Stop with all this hugging, you don't deserve one if u have under performed. our players should know there will be a mad man waiting for them after a weak performance.
"he can be a joker but the batman joker"
i think he needs this fire, we have a capable team and we have depth too now ( bar defense) and he needs to transfer all this angst / frustration to his players. how can these players not be frustrated after playing well and not winning a single trophy last season? i think we are too soft as a team, we have got all the quality in the world but we lack fight and angst when we are down. Teams should dread facing klopp and his team. '
It is needed. i think this debacle, his own incapability and carelessness should fire up Klopp and in turn that fire should reflect in his team.

{Ed025's Note - you dont know how angry klopp gets in the dressing room, 200% is impossible, he is not alex ferguson..

2.) 09 Aug 2017 07:19:19
Can we drop the Sakho nonsense please.
Firstly we only know about a few matters that became public there could be more.
Secondly, how hard is it to be good at the club when you are on loan or training alone. He is not being given another opportunity to mess his team mates around.

3.) 09 Aug 2017 08:36:07
Pls, the Sahko issue needs to be done with now and forever. The guy is like Trump. Always playing the victim like a Snowflake-in-Chief, never taking responsibility for anything he does and blaming others for his own pathetic behavior. He's a cancer in the DR and Klopp has successfully performed chimotherapy and our DR is now very tight. I don't care how good a player is, if he acted like Sahko did and is doing, he needs to get the book thrown at him and get shot of, end of.

4.) 09 Aug 2017 11:36:57
If in doubt over Sakho. have a look at the last game vs Palace and his actions pitchside, should be pretty clear after that if he should go.

5.) 09 Aug 2017 07:54:51
Ed025, i know, sadly you are right too .
Our team knows he is good boss, now they need to know he is the boss.
i don't know how angry he gets but it but i have never seen him get purple with anger flared nostrils (so i am thinking not much) . he has never been too angry i feel. i don't know but i do feel we miss some elements in our game. i call it anger may be others will call it something else.
i mean if you loose to burnley with 90 percent possession, somebody needs to go complete nazi on players behinds.

Ed002 - would you be able to disclose which player treated Aquilani so poorly? Very disappointed to hear about that sort of culture at the club, albeit over a decade ago.

Totally understand if it wouldn't be appropriate for you to name anyone - just asking out of curiosity.

{Ed002's Note - It was dealt with years ago, it is of no relevance now.}

Hi Ed, given what you know about Keita (from what you've seen of his ability, his role at the club, anything you might have heard about his attitude etc etc), what would be your course of action if it was up to you? Do you think the club are right to be close to giving up on the project?
Thanks!

{Ed001's Note - yes, he has been injured too much. If you want to win trophies you have to be ruthless.}
