Hi Eds, does anyone know of any changes with regards to Achterberg? Just wondering if there are any plans for an upgrade in that position.
Cheers.

Swig

Why are people so adverse to him?
Has there been something said about him, or is it just because we have had poor keepers, who don't seem to improve much?

2.) 30 May 2018 08:06:42
Keepers join then seem to get worse.

3.) 30 May 2018 08:13:47
Do they get worse or do you just notice their mistakes more when they are playing for us?

4.) 30 May 2018 09:18:40
No they do get worse. Perhaps that is in the limelight but they certainly don’t seem to learn from mistakes which I would assume as a coach it would be your primary focus!

It is also relating to how good the previous GK coach was with Reina, seems a step back!

5.) 30 May 2018 09:24:34
Reina got worse after he joined.

6.) 30 May 2018 09:43:55
In fairness Migs always had a mistake in him and how many times did people watch Karius before he came here? I would guess not a lot.
The problem seems to me that we bought the wrong keepers. You say they don't seem to learn from their mistakes but that's their fault.

7.) 30 May 2018 09:44:17
Im sure something was said by one of the eds or someone in the know a few years ago saying that he wasnt a very progressive coach and was using outdated GK training techniques but I maybe wrong.

Also his appointmemt to the first team coincided with Reinas decline in form and probably worst of all he was he played a major role in the targeting of Mignolet as he had been supposedly tracking him for a number of years. However, he is one of the few GK coaches to have attained his UEFA pro licence and was one of the only backroom staff members kept on by Klopp from Rodgers time so he must be doing something right, just not sure what.

Personally after overseeing the decline or stagnation of 3 GKs (4 if you include Ward) I think there should be a change however, as Klopp seems to be a big fan of his that seems unlikely to happe anytime soon.

8.) 30 May 2018 09:50:51
I think the general perception is that no keeper has improved under his tenure, but maybe also that if a top class keeper was on the cards, is he the right person to be coaching/ mentoring. Personally I would say it's something to be at least looked at, there is no point looking to improve the squad without looking to constantly improve the support network.

9.) 30 May 2018 10:27:48
It could be entirely coincidence of course, but there can be little doubt that Reina declined quite a bit around the time achterberg took over as coach.
Migs was always inclined to having flaky moments but it was disappointing that his kicking and distribution didn't improve much with achterberg.
Karius is prone to losing focus at key moments, and that may be a mental trait that can't be coached out of him?
It is interesting that the only keeper I can recall staying at his level was Ward, who spent most of the season away from achterberg.
The evidence is starting to accumulate I that the one constant in all the keepers decline is that they worked with achterberg.
Yes they could all be just pretty poor keepers and uncoachable in key areas, but at this point I would be digging deeper into achterberg's methods and performance, and having him evaluated by external experts.

10.) 30 May 2018 10:27:12
maybe its because we have not had a top class goal keeper for many years and went with cheaper alternates due to budget constraints and need to build the team further in other positions so never spent proper money!

Also, playing in goal for Liverpool comes with a lot of pressure, needs a certain type of mentality to succeed at huge club like Liverpool.

It's possibly not the coach's fault, at the end of the day it's difficult to coach not making mistakes and decision making.

We do need a game changing goalie, one that pulls the unbelievable save that changes a game or gets you them 3 point ala De Gea at Man Utd.

I Also don't believe we should sell Karius, seems a nice kid so we should stand by him, he will learn from the competition and is young enough to do so. Very young for a goalie still remember.

11.) 30 May 2018 11:12:28
Redwin - I think having a “game changing goalie” has been the problem!

12.) 30 May 2018 12:24:59
Fast Tino true but in the negative lol.

13.) 30 May 2018 14:22:42
New coach for me. simple.

14.) 30 May 2018 18:31:18
Also worth considering that because the defence has been seen as shaky for several years teams have targeted, especially banging in crosses, which means keepers get exposed more as well and then targeted more etc. Bit of a vicious cycle to it really.

What's going on with Shaq at the moment Ed's?

I hear he is not lighting up training sessions, but is there any more to it?

He had such a great spell and there have been a few games he seemed perfect for, just wondered if he's likely to feature much in the run in.

Swig

{Ed001's Note - unfortunately he has reverted to the old Shaqiri and is not tracking back to protect the full back in matches. Klopp won't put up with people not pulling their weight.}

1.) 12 Mar 2019 07:56:52
I don’t get it, paid very good money and looked after like kings to get fit and kick a football around and someone can’t be bothered to run around?
What’s his problem?

2.) 12 Mar 2019 07:57:49
Matter of time before something like this happened.
Shaqiri never came across as a Klopp player to me, especially as a first team player. Great opportunity for Wilson to move up the pecking order in pre season (unless he has the same flaws in terms of workrate) .
Maybe a punt on Julian Brandt for the low release clause seems like a good idea.

3.) 12 Mar 2019 07:59:20
Might he even be replaced in the summer if he doesn’t get his act together?

4.) 12 Mar 2019 08:02:44
I said that yesterday and got slated.

5.) 12 Mar 2019 09:48:06
If this is what he has resorted to now, not working hard when there is so much on the line then we should let him go during the summer. If he’s not going to work hard when we are fighting for the league and Champions League then he never will. Such a shame as I thought we’d got a real bargain.

6.) 12 Mar 2019 10:29:25
Frustrating when we have all seen how good he is when he wants to impress and put in the effort.

7.) 12 Mar 2019 11:02:34
If we simply don’t play him then i am sure he will get the message and knuckle down. He doesn’t strike me as a bad or lazy player, maybe just one who doesn’t always realise what is required of him. I’m willing to give him time to sort it out because the boy has a lot of talent.

8.) 12 Mar 2019 12:11:09
People lose form. I don't think it's over for the shaq. But lallana playing so well, in true klopp style, he may find it hard to get in the team before ad's and naby.

9.) 12 Mar 2019 12:52:31
I could be wrong but any games i remember seeing shaq play recently he has been playing too deep if anything.

Certainly when he came on against utd he was giving plenty of cover.

Assumption based on a live watch only. Would need a rewatch of all his games to be sure.

When he plays he does more tracking back than salah.

I think the problem maybe lies more with how he has been using the ball and his movement further foward.

I assume he must also be slacking off a bit in training to be getting such a blank from the boss. But by that logic so must keita then.

So imo its a bit harsh to be getting stuck into shaq saying he puts no effort in when he is playing because he always seems busy to me. Maybe he he has not been getting the message about certain tactic tweeks for certain games.

Certainly recently its been next to impossible for him to have any impact due to the minutes he has been given.

His best form this season came when he was getting decent game time.
Now that the games aren't as heavy klopp doesn't need to rotate as much.

Shaq may well have a part to play yet before the season ends. Its up to the fans at games to make him feel 10 feet tall when he crosses the line.

{Ed001's Note - you need to watch it again, he was getting screamed at by Klopp for not tracking back, because he wasn't. He was going back halfway and then stopping and providing no cover, while also not engaging the opposition to stop them going past him. He was just stood watching off the ball, when he was even on the right side at all.}

10.) 12 Mar 2019 13:42:55
I will take your word for it ed001. No way im going to watch that match again lol

If he is blatently ignoring instructions there's only going to be one winner come the end of it.

Its a shame because he can unlock a stubborn defence which may be required in a game or two in the run in.

Really looking forward to the World Cup, primarily for respite from the hourly posts asking or talking about Fekir, Alisson and Shaqiri.

I doubt the eds are though. Doubt they are looking forward to thensure questions on every player who scores or has any sort of decent game.

70 or 80 million for a keeper, the world has gone mad. I get that with Tv rights, particularly in the UK, that teams are getting nearly 150m from that and the league alone. But, the big teams aside (real, Barca, Bayern, etc), how is that sustainable? Is a super league inevitable? Certainly, I don't see how outside of the PL it can continue. I'd be interested to see your and the eds thoughts, are we nearing a ceiling? Will it all blow up? If prices continue to rise, what happens to other leagues?

Swig

1.) 03 Jun 2018 19:44:58
I agree it has gone too far it is getting obscene. But why should a keeper that can win or lose you games (titles) be worth less than a defender or a midfielder?

2.) 03 Jun 2018 20:29:54
Most experts think this is just the start of a bubble and prices for the top players could increase further.

3.) 03 Jun 2018 21:01:46
The price of a real top player is normally twice that of a good player, so if Butland is going for £30m then how much does a top class keeper cost? Pay the money to get the position sorted for ten years or take a punt on a good player (again) for half the cost who might end up a top notch but might not?
I know what I would do if I had the chance.

4.) 04 Jun 2018 10:19:47
I personally wouldn't go for Alisson Becker, because tbh, I have now watched him twice, and neither time has he impressed me. He was poor against us in the semi final, looked a little unnerved by our front 3 and his distribution was average at best. Granted, yesterday was a warm up game for the WC but again he was not brilliant and two of his clearances goal kicks went wayward, which if this happened to Karius, the Anfield faithful would tear the lad to pieces verbally!
For me Alisson is not the answer and should be avoided at all costs for 70-80m
Oblak is the better keeper for me, has performed at a top level with Atleti and would be my choice. However, I don't believe he will move this summer.
We may have to settle for Jack Butland chaps, but it is not the end of the world, he was the best young keeper around before his injury, and I would be happy to take him on the basis we could replace Achterburg as his coach during the summer too.

27 May 2018 07:16:36
I was at the game, and was gutted to see none of the lads go over to Karius immediately after the game. Devastated for him.

1.) 27 May 2018 07:44:31
I just posted something saying I heard that was the case. Its hard for the first team players as some needed consoling themselves but Henderson as captain should have gone up to him. Watching Karius walk over to our fans alone was really painful to watch, really painful.

I remember when Saurez crying after the Crystal Palace game and Kolo Toure held him and then Gerrard despite being upset himself came over to him and took over from Toure and held him all the way off the park because he realised he is the captian. Yes I was/ am mad at Karius because I am human, he cost us the game and yes he should be moved on but I have a heart and watching him walk to the fans on his own and walk off the pitch on his own just didn't sit right with me and was not a good look for the team at all.

Current Liverpool injuries:

Trent (dead leg), Can (back), Gomez (arm), Henderson (ankle), Llana (thigh), Mane (knock), Matip (thigh), Ox (knee)

Would have liked to see Woodburn get game time yesterday, nice to see Trent in the middle though.

Only 4 games (hopefully) to go though.

I think TAA, Hendo and Mane will be fine. Also, Robbo had a knock as well but was rested so he should be fine as well.

Seems a surprise unless the plan is to rely on Endo unit Bajcetic is fit, as none of the others is a top class number 6. Personally I thought he was ideal, so a real shame.

Swig

{Ed002's Note - The situation has been made a little complicated with Andre but Liverpool can still strike a deal, but as you know there is interest from elsewhere. There remain other DM options for the club. Perhaps looking again at the more versatile Thuram might be an idea.}

Only about 10% of players who have ACL surgery have a reoccurrence, the majority come back just as strong as they were before and have no higher risk.

Just look at Shearer, Xavi, Pires, etc.

Personally I still think Karius has potential, I'd bring in a new #1 and try to persuade him to stay as #2. He's very young and a year or two with us to build him back up could be good for both parties.

Either way, he's been pretty solid all year bar the final, and helped get us where we are.
