Hi Ed002,

Stricly this isn't Liverpool related but i think it potentially impacts future transfers by Liverpool and other clubs.

Due to the current financial difficulties facing most clubs, do you predict an increase in 3rd party owernship of players (in the countries that allow it - e. g. Portugal) . I am just thinking in respect of a number of talented youngsters in S. America. European clubs may not be able to pay as much as they have done historically which opens up a bigger door for 3rd parties to help finance the deal - which then makes things complicated down the line if those players wish to move to a league which doesn't allow 3rd party ownership.

Really interested to hear your thoughts.

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed002's Note - It is a mixed answer. In Brazil in particular we are seeing clubs sell part of the player rights to third parties - at the lowest level, sponsorship is being obtained through the sale of part ownership of players to local businesses. And there has been an increase in that.

There is a strange situation in Spain where Spurs wanted to buy a player but it was two complex to sort out: Emerson (RWB) A complicated situation where the part owned player had a 50% stake in his ownership sold to Barcelona by Atletico Mineiro and the other 50% stake in his ownership sold to Real Betis by Ponte Preta with a final resolution of ownership needed by June 30, 2021 (currently registered with Barcelona and loaned to Real Betis). Real Betis will not want to sell their stake unless they can make a significant profit from the sale and FIFA rules mean that neither side can influence the other. To allow a transfer to England, where third party ownership is not allowed for new signings, will be difficult and expensive, with a third party agent/lawyer required to undertake all negotiations.

In reality, across Europe, including Portugal, TPO is banned now and the situation with players such as Emerson arriving from Brazil, sees clubs commit to resolve the situation within a fixed period. It will continue in South America.}

What is going on with Soton reporting us? Anybody heard anything on the details? Are we in the wrong?

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed025's Note - according to radio solent..

1.) 06 Jun 2017 12:45:50
Not to excuse Liverpool if they actually have gotten this wrong (and hopefully if they did it's a genuine mistake and resolvable rather than arrogance or outright incompetence) however I do think the whole system is flawed.

In what kind of world is speaking to a players agent not effectively speaking to the player themselves? It should be black and white IMO. without permission from the club there should be no communication with players or the players agent to discuss a possible transfer under any circumstances.

2.) 06 Jun 2017 13:01:08
Soton) probably favour a man city deal as it will offer more cash straight up. Our deal likely to feature more add ons and clauses. Let's hope the pony tailed warrior is set on liverpool. I think he is. That's why they're making a fuss though imo.

3.) 06 Jun 2017 15:04:22
Exactly, Jonny. Remember, his agent came to us. We did not go to him meaning, VVD has his mind set on playing for LFC. To me, this is a ploy to send VVD to City against his wish cos they obviously want the money.

They don't want to sell to us cos a) they don't like us and b) they want more money from City who like Chelsea, spoke to him as well via Pep and Conte but the Saints are clearly fine with that.

Now if we did anything wrong which I doubt then we need to take whatever punishment we get and assume that the VVD deal is dead. And if we didn't then Saints will be looking like desperate people who are just Salty cos VVD chose us which means less money for them.

4.) 06 Jun 2017 16:08:17
Can't work like that Zimbo. We'd have never bothered unless his agent sounded us out.
Also if we want say Moreno to go, we'd like his agent to see what's out there. Moreno isn't listed, not sure transfer list even exists anymore.

Also most clubs don't want to sell their players, not going to speak to anyone otherwise.

Not sure if people have seen the photos uploaded to the Liverpool website today from Melwood. Bobby Firmino has only gone and dyed his hair red!

Needless to say it does not look good on the lad at all.

That being said Harvey Elliot still wins the prize for worst haircut. get a haircut son!

I don't think it looks bad at all. Reminds me of the Freddie Ljunberg days. What I really dislike is the blond/ white hair with the black beard (the Aguero look) . Anytime you look at someone and your mind immediately goes into what exotic bird you're reminded of, is "yuck" inducing.

Hi Ed002

I hope you are keeping safe and enjoying yourself.

Has there been an agreement in the premiership on players out of contract at the end of this month?

For instance, if Willian were to sign a contract with a rival club (say Man Utd. ), I understand that he would not be able to represent his new club until he is registered next season, but would he automatically not be available for selection for Chelsea once his contract runs out, if the season extends beyond 30 June? Is the case currently that it is up to the player and the club to extend contracts (like has happened with Lallana) otherwise they will not be available for selection as no longer employees?

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed002's Note - Most, but not all, clubs are looking to have players extend their contracts until the end of July when the Premier League will be over. Some clubs have decided not to offer that option (Liverpool with Clyne for example) and some players do not wish to extend (perhaps due to injury concerns, e.g. Pedro). If a player were to agree a move to another club (say Willian to Manchester United as an example) the transfer cannot be completed until the transfer window opens and international clearance is received. Until then he would be in the same position as a loan player (like Harry Wilson) and could decide to extend his contract or not. One thing that is bubbling under in the background, although unrelated to Liverpool, is a temporary change of UEFA rules to allow a player to play for three clubs this season - and they are to decide today whether to allow transferred players to appear for their new clubs (e.g. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech may be allowed to appear for Chelsea in the Champions League in August). That decision is being made today.}

1.) 17 Jun 2020 11:36:37
Thanks Ed002. Very much appreciated.

Very interesting times for those involved in these decisions that's for sure!

Would the three clubs in one season rule change be a one off for this season - and then revert back to the old rules once "normality" is restored?

Red Sandman.

{Ed002's Note - Right, just for this season. The plan is everything returns to normal next season.}

2.) 17 Jun 2020 11:49:51
Not that I have anything against Chelsea on this one, but that idea doesn’t seem right. Werner, for instance, should play for RBL if anyone (I understand that he’s refused to as well) .
Surely a team must complete the season, regardless of the competition, with the players that have hitherto seen it this far?

{Ed002's Note - The club that raised the issue originally was concerned about players leaving or not extending as they prepare for next season and look to train with their new sides during August - and that is why the issue is being discussed.}

3.) 17 Jun 2020 12:26:50
Completely agree with that jucier.

4.) 17 Jun 2020 14:38:24
i think the werner/ chelsea/ rbl situation is a really good reason why they should just rebrand the CL for this season. I understand C.V. has messed things up, but it just seems crazy to me that we have this scenario where Werner may not represent RBL for this season's CL so he can prepare for Chelsea's PL. I may have missed something, but that's how I understood it and it just doens't seem right that clubs are disadvantaged in the same season that is being restarted.

{Ed002's Note - Nobody is being disadvantaged. The whole issue arose from a club concerned about losing players as the transfer window would be open.}

5.) 17 Jun 2020 16:25:00
Werner cannot play for Chelsea in CL this season. Just announced details from today’s meeting.

Hi Ed002

I hope you and your family are safe and sound.

Could I be cheeky and follow up on a request for you to do a podcast soon?

Doesnt have to be transfer related - i for one would love to hear more stories like the ones you told of some footballers having ridiculous demands for their clubs and agents and what not!

{Ed002's Note - I am planning on trying to do some but right now I am very busy. But when I can. Thanks.}

1.) 14 May 2020 20:23:40
Ed002 is trying to get the Premier League back on track, man. First things first.

02 Mar 2020 13:53:21
Ed001 -

Have you seen the news that Sturridge has had his contract in Turkey terminated by mutual consent?

Any idea on why he would do this outside the transfer window? Seems a bit odd doesn't it?

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed001's Note - I don't know, usually that happens in Turkey when a player isn't being paid but I don't know if that is happening in Studger's case. He might just be homesick.}

1.) 02 Mar 2020 14:37:11
I just realised, there is also the possibility of an MLS move beckoning. That is more than likely why.

2.) 02 Mar 2020 16:48:03
There's your answer, Studge likes a flutter 😂 banned until June 2020.

{Ed001's Note - oh that explains it!}

3.) 02 Mar 2020 16:51:57
Looks like he can't play again this season for anyone.

4.) 02 Mar 2020 17:55:03
How rubbish is he at betting though?
Couldn’t even get the team he was being transferred to correct.

5.) 03 Mar 2020 07:36:11
I had another read into the story and apparently it was his brother who was making all the bets without Sturridge's knowledge. If that is true, their next family meal is going to be quite an awkward one.

Red Sandman.

6.) 03 Mar 2020 10:40:37
He'll probably end up at somewhere like inter miami for the remainder of his career.

7.) 03 Mar 2020 13:17:28
Just a question Eds, how do these people who fined Sturridge 150k get the money from him? Has the ruling got a basis in law outside football?

Sorry if I'm melting your head.

{Ed002's Note - He will send a cheque or simply transfer the funds. The regulations apply to sport - not just football.}

10 Feb 2020 19:06:56
Hi Ed001,

Not sure if you saw Can's screamer for Dortmund over the weekend (its a beauty! ) .

What did you make of Can during his time as a Liverpool player? Do you think he could still be of use to us this season if he were still here?

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed001's Note - he was ok, but he wasn't good enough to hold down a place when everyone was fit then and he is miles away from being good enough now we have moved on.}

1.) 11 Feb 2020 01:16:28
I honestly could never work out what Can’s skill set was while he was with us. No passing range, didn’t control the tempo particularly well, didn’t score many goals, wasn’t defensively switched on, wasn’t particularly skillful, never really knew how to utilise his size and strength well. He was average in all of these departments and would occasionally make a bursting run before running the ball into a blind alley. Was very slow and cumbersome as well. Not a terrible player by any means but when people used to hype up his performances i could never really understand what they were talking about.

2.) 11 Feb 2020 02:10:00
He was hard to figure out, at such a young age he looked like he had the perfect attributes to play his position, strong, aggressive, could stride with purpose and cover ground quickly and even though he looked a bit raw as you expect from a 20 year old his issue has been that he's never improved much on his technical ability and his reading of the game.

He had the perfect chance because the years he was with us were when we were crying out for a midfield destroyer as Henderson, Allen, Milner, Lucas, lallana, wijnaldum didn't seem right for that role in klopps early years. Being a young German too it seemed klopp couldn't have been a better manager for him to develop under but he never once seemed to sustain a decent period of time performing to high levels. I always liked him but as the time passed I was losing more and more belief in him and it got unclear exactly what type of midfield role he is strongest in. I was frustrated he left for free as I felt he could have earned 30-40mill for us if transferred but he's not one bit of a loss to our team now as he wouldn't be any more than 5th or 6th choice at the best in our midfield selection.

3.) 11 Feb 2020 07:31:49
Can had a good run in the team in the 16/ 17 season, after starting the season injured, which resulted in the team getting a CL spot at the end of the season. He scored 5 goals which I would guess is more than any other midfielder that season. Maybe he wouldn't have kicked on who knows, but Klopp and Liverpool wanted him to sign a new contract so I can only guess that Klopp was happy to work with him and see how he could progress.

4.) 11 Feb 2020 08:31:33
In a few games he dominated the midfield and at times could look like a 'Rolls-Royce' of a player, but far too inconsistent and no he wouldn't give us anything extra that we don't already have. I'd say he's on a par with Grujic, who is a few years younger and only really starting his career finally.

5.) 11 Feb 2020 16:40:13
I think he was incredibly skillful. He was seen as Gerrard replacement, so he was never going to reach those heights. Someone said he didn't score many goals. Well you should have a re think. He was always our highest scoring midfielder (maybe bar milly on penalties)

He was a box to box CM imo. But being very knowledge about tactics etc and being very skillful he was used in many positions because he could adapt. His overhead goal vs Watford was not only an amazing goal of the season, it got us into the champions league.

I liked him, big personality that I don't think has been able to flourish at juve, in Ronaldo kiera shadow. I liked his smug celebration too. Good looking geezer. I think he will be amazing for dortmund and I reckon he'll be good at the eurors.

6.) 11 Feb 2020 23:54:05
Can was one of my fav. LFC players during his time here. I thought he had the right skill set to make it as ac CM at LFC. He was also very brave and played thru injury for half the 16/ 17 season (calf injury) cos we lacked depth and Klopp had no choice but to play him. The City game (4-3) was where all his qualities of pace, power, physicality and skill came alive to me the most. He was a beast in midfield along with Ox and Gini and he played that game completely ill.

But for all that, I just felt that he was too slow and positionally unaware to play the DM role the way Fab and Hendo play it. And he lacked the quality to play the "8" the way Gini and Ox play it and with him demanding game time/ position guarantees before signing a new deal, Klopp was always going to let him go esp. since Klopp already had Fab in his sights. Love the guy but was never going to be good enough to flourish in this team the same way Gini, Ox, Hendo and Fab have.

Dejan may have had a few wobbly moments here and there, but he also had some exceptional performances to make up for it. He will forever be rememebered for his performance against Dortmund.

Best of luck to him and his family in Russia. I hope it brings him lots of success.

Not saying he is at the end but he is one of the players moving towards the end. He is 29 and so has a few more years left in him for sure!

I was just trying to work through the logic as to who McKennie may be a replacement for. He plays CM and is non-home grown so the logic would be that he would be a CM replacement for one of our existing non-home grown CM.

Personally i don't think it will happen - and Gini doesn't need replacing so hoping that doesn't happen either!

I don't think he is a done deal. At least it hasn't been reported yet.

He is a very talented player from what I can tell. We have a few more defensive minded midfielders moving towards the end of their Liverpool careers in the next year or so (Gini and Milner), so it could be a case that he is being brought in as their eventual replacement.

My only concern is our home grown numbers (as Ed002 rightfully keeps reminding us of) . If he comes and Milly goes then I think we are right at the upper limit of non-home grown players in the squad. Somethings has got to give somewhere to keep us in line with the requirements.

Interesting if true.

He is young and from what I can tell is more of a defensive minded midfielder so perhaps he as seen as a longer term replacement for Milner?

{Ed002's Note - He would be a good addition but not a starter, not HG and space in the squad is at a premium.}

I think it may be a bit early for us to rely on him as a starter. Would we want to put that much pressure on the lad? What if results don't go our way and he gets some media pressure - would be a lot for him to take.

I think ideally we keep Gini (new contract etc) and Jones gets eased into the team, taking over the playtime previously occupied by Lallana. This would probably mean a number of appearances off the bench, the odd league start and starting most cup games. THen if he does well we go from there!

Hi Ed002,

I appreciate that Moore presided over Liverpool at a successful time on the pitch, but would it not also be fair to say that our behaviour / actions off the pitch have been very poor (tapping up, stealing confidential info etc etc) . In that regard it is difficult to see Moore's tenure as successful. Hopefully this new chappy learns from past mistakes and we can state conducting business the more moral and proper way.

Where would you rank Stevie G in the list of great captains, Ed001?

He certainly inspired others, but he did seem to have a selfish side to him (always taking long shots, stories of him and Carra wanting input into transfers and team selection etc. )

Red Sandman.

Red Sandman

{Ed001's Note - I wouldn't have him down as a great captain. He drove players away, influenced team selection and transfer policy in a negative way, all stuff a great captain shouldn't do. He was a good captain but no more than that. Great players are not always the best choice for a captain's role.}
