I'd be delighted if we signed Mendy.

Nicky we need to tap him up first 😜.

{Ed025's Note - good stuff ace.. :)

So, as we enter into the final run in of the season, I can't help but feel we should be better placed than we are. Yes we are in the CL places which is great but we still have some tricky fixtures ahead.

If any of you get to watch the games live, you really do see how woefully poor we are at the back we are at times. I sit behind the goal 22 rows up so get a different view to the TV camera's.

Whilst we invested quite heavily in the team this summer, it still bemuses me as to the lack of quality investment at the back. Whilst Matip has been ok, we went cheap and opted for Klavan and moved Milner to LB ( not saying he hasn't played well there ) where as I feel we really should have tried to sign a real quality CB.

Whilst we might get into the CL, as it stands, with our current back 4 and strategy / attitude towards the defence, we will not win the Premier League and have zilch chance of progressing the latter stages of the Champions League.

I was fortunate and grew up watching our great teams of the 80's, solid at the back, ruthless going forward.

So come on Klopp and your team of scouts
and analysts, let's get this defence and keeper situation sorted, we are not that far away!

1.) 13 Apr 2017 09:35:21
I agree. a great defence set up wins you trophies ( except if you're Barcelona) .

2.) 13 Apr 2017 10:10:37
Nicky those 'tricky' fixtures are only tricky because we've been below par against 'lesser teams'. on paper it's the easiest run in and before our disastrous results against the bottom 4 we would have loved that run in!

I don't think we heavily invested the summer at all? Mane was the only one in that was a significant fee- the rest were below 5 mil which doesn't get you much these days. I think this summer where some decent investment will come now klopp has had a year and a half with the squad. Some improved dramatically, some haven't improved at all.

Hopefully we limit that to just a few key positions but go after first team quality players ( not to just thicken the squad)

3.) 13 Apr 2017 10:11:45
Spot on nicky

The goals we concede are goals which you see scored in sunday league games, its not like the opposition even have to work hard to get the goal.

Like you said priority this summer is sorting out the defence and maybe adding a similar player to mane to play on left.

4.) 13 Apr 2017 10:26:48
Sorry I forgot about wini, still want 'heavy' comparative to most top teams in the league.

5.) 13 Apr 2017 11:05:34
Swish mate, if you read my post you'll see I said "quite" heavily". Ball park figure before any fees etc would be around £65m which is a fair amount, especially when you take salairoes into account.

The reality is that Klopp has had three transfer windows to address the defence situation and it's not been done, we are no different to under Rodgers when it comes to defending! That's what cost is the title a couple of seasons ago and why we are 12 points from Chelsea.

There are 14 "lesser" teams in the league which makes up 70% of our fixtures. This has been going on since before Christmas and into 2017,.

Whilst there maybe significant funds made avalible to Klopp ( I don't know ) these critical positions need to be addressed.

6.) 13 Apr 2017 11:09:55
Maybe the heavy investment is waiting for CL football? Plus, we keep getting told that Liverpool has no cash and heavy debt?

7.) 13 Apr 2017 11:22:58
It's not just personell IMO. It's the way we play
Klopp's teams have never had a tight defence.
What we need is a leader/ organiser at the back and a top class keeper.
If we cut out goals from set pieces or the second ball from set pieces we will be a lot better. That doesn't require Franco Baresi, it requires better organisation and better training.

8.) 13 Apr 2017 11:34:58
Agree Nicky on the positions. Defence and keeper would be first things on the shipping list. , I'm just saying compared to most team we're up against it's not a big amount. The two that make up most of it were a success: 'mane and wini. By lesser teams I mean basically bottom half but as I said at the beginning of the season we would have rejoiced at that! Certainly wouldn't want to be man utd chasing top 4 having to play chelsea, city, Arsenal and Spurs I think. Hopefully the stoke game was a mental change for us and we can put those games to bed like we should be!

9.) 13 Apr 2017 14:33:24
Ron, Klopp won the Bundesliga with the best defence (34 conceded) in '11/ 12 season so what you say is not totally valid regarding the way we play.

Nicky, your post make some valid points. We are where we are cos that is what we deserve. We have not shown the right approach to these games cos we simply are not willing to work as hard as we do in the bigger games, to get a result. It is a mindset issue and not a personel issue as such cos we have won 18 games this season and only 6 of them came vs the top 6. The others came from beating lesser teams so let's just chill out with the "unable to beat lesser teams" narrative.

Same with the defence, the goals we concede are comical. This is due to an inconsistent lineup in defence, lack of communication and complete complacency in critical defensive situations a la set pieces. 95% of the goals we have conceded this season can be attributed to an individual error or a collection of individual errors. That is not systems-related. It is related to individuals not being focused and showing grit. This is why we look clueless and do not attack second or third balls. We are NOT switched on for the full length of defensive sequences. We seem to relax as soon as the first ball is dealt with.

We can change players till the cows come home. If they lack the mental toughness, steel and focus, the issue will keep happening.

10.) 13 Apr 2017 15:36:04
Good post but I don't know how much of a better position we could realistically hope to be in? We are 3rd having played everyone in the top 7 home and away, with only 6 games to go against (with all due respect) teams we should be beating comfortably.

Before the season I'd have taken 4th place. Now we have a chance to maybe push on and finish in the top 2!

11.) 13 Apr 2017 16:51:59
Spot on, MK. We are where we are cos we deserve it.

12.) 15 Apr 2017 07:38:19
Funny thing is you can go back before Klopp into previos regimes and see that beating the bottom teams has been the problem for years. Getting something against the top sides has been happening but the title winners are getting more against the bottom sides than we are.

There's obviously a lot of speculation surrounding the possible departure of Couthino in the Summer.

Heard an interview with Graham Hunter this morning, he mentioned Couthino to Barcelona is very much a real possibility and that the club is looking at potential replacements.

Question for the Ed's, does this bloke Hunter have much credibility when it comes to potential transfers in and out of Spain?

Nicky D

{Ed001's Note - nope.}

1.) 08 Nov 2016 12:30:40
ed can Barcelona pay the money Liverpool what for him.

{Ed001's Note - depends on far too many things to be sure. Depends on who they sell, who will lend them money, who is president etc etc.}

2.) 08 Nov 2016 12:48:16
What if Donald Trump is president?

3.) 08 Nov 2016 12:52:49
Interestingly balague doesn't think Barcelona would want to commit that level of investment to coutinho if they were to keep their front 3.

{Ed001's Note - you could have stopped at the word think.....}

4.) 08 Nov 2016 13:26:31
I think if it does get to the stage whereby we enter negotiations to sell him, we should really think about his value. I personally think we should have sold Suarez and for more and we shouldn't make that mistake again.

5.) 08 Nov 2016 13:53:30
@MK The Donald will infact build a wall around coutinho and make Barcelona pay for it, so he will be with liverpool forever!

6.) 08 Nov 2016 13:59:14
Actually Barcelona and Real are no longer centre of European football powess when the $ is all in England. Coutinho should stay put as in coming seasons many world top soccer stars will be plying their trade right here. I mean who knows messi suarez neymar could be here if money men have their ways.

7.) 08 Nov 2016 14:09:13
I cannot see where would be a fit for coutinho or where would be willing to pay the money in footballing terms to be honest.

Barcelona, madrid, paris, munich, all much more exotic and plush places to be than liverpool, that's for sure.

But how many of those teams really need coutinho? Where would he fit in? Is his incredibly direct style of play a fit for any of them? Bayern perhaps makes the most sense, barcelona would not as he is not, in my opinion, the answer to an ageing iniesta.

As for real, no player should be enouraged to go there until perez has gone, they are nothing short of a footballing soap opera. PSG play in a terrible league and coutinho is better than that, he should strive for more. I can't see juventus coming in either.

Really only bayern makes sense for coutinho and even then, would they pay the money?

8.) 08 Nov 2016 15:48:11
I don't see it as a feasible transfer for Barca? What are we talking, 60,70 million? Barcelona don't have attacking problems. Now I'm not saying they don't want him, who wouldn't want him? But I don't see it as a transfer Barcelona will make this summer.

If psg came in for him and we are winning things and in champions league then I don't see why couts would swap here for Paris?

9.) 08 Nov 2016 16:24:38
barca want him to replace inestia and neymar has been putting the ground work in, the lesson we should learn from the suarez situation is to make sure we get our number 1 target before we allow him to leave, in the meantime let's just enjoy him while he is here.

10.) 08 Nov 2016 18:59:06
Another whopper from Leek 😄.

11.) 08 Nov 2016 19:15:12
Lol leek i'm actually looking forward to your posts daily now, they're that rediculous they're funny.

12.) 08 Nov 2016 20:15:37
Or we could just wait till the end of the season to see what happens?

06 Nov 2016 19:56:38
Lots of praise for the likes of Couthino, Bobby etc etc. And rightly so.

I actually thought Matip had a really good game, first to nearly everything and he reads the game exceptionally well.

Brilliant all round performance by the team, including young Ejaria when he came on, some nice touches around the box.

30 Oct 2016 10:16:21
Some really good performances and great football played yesterday.

But, we can't seriously challenge until we sort the defence out.

Player marking ( in our box ) was virtually non existent at times.

Nicky D

1.) 30 Oct 2016 10:58:11
Is joint top of the league having played 3 of the toughest away games already not challenging?

2.) 30 Oct 2016 11:04:33
We'll still challenge I think but yes we need to work on the defence a new cb is needed to begin with.

3.) 30 Oct 2016 11:50:56
Lfc16, I agree that we need the defence sorted to challenge for the title this season but we don't need a new CB, that much is clear.

4.) 30 Oct 2016 12:18:56
There will always be negative people. No matter how far we develop in 1 season. 'We can't challenge'? Based on what? Lfc have had the hardest fixture list of any of the top 7 teams and are joint top! Please enlighten me because that's the stuff dreams are made of so what was your expectation? Sick of half the team being slagged off as not good enough. ? Not good enough for what? Deliver results we all hope for? because that's what they're doing.

5.) 30 Oct 2016 12:33:59
individual mistakes in defence are what's costing us atm, no one expected lovren to make the mistake he did, cut those out and we will be fine, first time in 7 matches we have conceded more than 1 goal, results wise I couldn't have asked for more, we could be in for a special season, we just need to believe, get behind the players and the manager and be fearless no matter who we face.

6.) 30 Oct 2016 12:40:12
I looked at our opening 10 games and thought we'd struggle. But we're playing great football, winning away games, making Anfield a fortress and scoring goals for fun across the team. Now if we can stop having these little brain farts in defence.

7.) 30 Oct 2016 13:00:52
Absolutely, KK. I am chuffed to bits about our start to the season but it seems even if we win the PL, some will still moan. Saw sone here bkaning Karius for the first goal. Really? Yep, those are some of the ragged comments I read on here. Pathetic, really.

8.) 30 Oct 2016 13:14:53
Make a valid point about our defending last night and it's being negative!

We lost the league by conceding too many goals under Rodgers, nothing negative just a blatantly obvious fact.

Some of you are clearly too young to remember, out Chamlionshipl winning teams, consistently at they, were built on a solid defence.

9.) 30 Oct 2016 12:38:22
We could challenge but our good isn't great compared to the two above us and couple below us mainly due our tendency to concede 1-2 goals every game.
2013/ 14 written all over.

10.) 30 Oct 2016 16:40:14
Clearly Lovrens fault for fist goal but Karius should have come out with his arms outstretched towards McCarther not down by his side, he may well have reached it but if not at least he would have put McCarther of a bit more and made the header more difficult.

11.) 30 Oct 2016 21:33:57
18and5, I disagree. No he couldn't. He put his hands down as he was worried he would touch the ball outside the box and also didn't wanna foul the player and get a red card. This is Lovren's fault and his only. I've seen these errors before but never have I heard a GK being blamed for it. I guess the rules are different for Karius.

I do like Klopp and I really hope he can bring success back to the club, but he's not addressed certain issues on field that were blatantly obvious when he took over, the defence being the big one for me -IMO.

My first choice was Ancelloti.

ED001.

I'm so pleased to read your post regarding Fergie. I gave similar debates with a group of pals that support ManU.

They just can't admit, have the sense, do not know their clubs history or are just too young to realise that Fergie spent huge in his early days to secure his first league title, remember it took him from 86 to 92 to achieve this!

Martin Edwards funded Fergie for big money named signings from 91 onwards, knowing that the riches of the premier league were just around the corner and of course the club first floated on the stock exchange in 91 to help find the new stadium and invest in the team. It really Dora's make me laugh then they slate city and Chelsea for busing the league lol.

I remember going to old Trafford away in the early days and seeing "Fergie out " banners around the stadium. The investment given to him by Edwards and the money jnjected into the club from the first floatation certainly saved his arse.

Nicky D

{Ed001's Note - you have to congratulate Edwards for having the sense to realise that Fergie needed backing rather than replacing. Also Fergie has to be congratulated for not taking the easy way out and placating the players there when he arrived. He saw the problems and worked to fix them.}
