How do you rate our midfield as a defending unit, especially going forward in the season? I believe that what we are doing works for us, and it proves we don't necessarily need a dedicated DM to just sit in front of the back 4. I can't think of one game (perhaps apart from the first 45 against Arsenal) when our midfield has been comprehensively overrun.

Nick_Bruce_Wayne

1.) 07 Oct 2016 00:06:39
The way we are at the min mate we're doing the job, I also don't believe we need a DM . we're going to have slip ups of course but overall we're doing excellent. I have no complaints.

2.) 07 Oct 2016 01:58:23
the point is the score more goals than the other side. the way the side is set up allows us to do that. Burnley is a weird game, the game plan worked but ball wold not go in. So far, the game plan has not really failed, possibly didn't function well against Swansea only.

3.) 07 Oct 2016 06:25:57
Henderson currently plays that role and he has been good so far. But I still believe we need a special player in that position, someone who sits there are dictate the game from the back. Henderson should play a lot more up the pitch very much like dembele did at Spurs.

4.) 07 Oct 2016 09:05:50
Burnley was just they got a great goal a minute in and allowed them to completely sit back and put in what was a great defensive performance. I think people over reacted with us being poor while it was more burnleys great execution of a game plan which nullified us to a large extent.

5.) 07 Oct 2016 09:39:20
Yeah I think half of it with Burnley is we didn't expect it, we underestimated them and failed doing so. which worried me when it came to the Hull game, but look what we did to them, better yet to Swansea, the main thing is we learnt from the mistakes we made at Burnley.

6.) 07 Oct 2016 10:56:09
The Burnley game wasn't really down to great tactics or defending by them. We just lacked a bit of finesse in the final third and were unlucky. Coutinho blazed everything over the bar - if one of them goes in it completely changes the game - just one of them days unfortunately. I'm confident we can crack open any park-the-bus teams, Mane is the key in that though because he can stretch a defence from a standing start and open up their shape.

7.) 07 Oct 2016 17:50:31
Burnley park the bus when they play a big team at home, regardless of who it is Why do I know this? They did the same thing to Arsenal and almost got a point until the breakthough happened. That is the way Burnley play, end of. The difference was they got a goal early and packed it in. It didn`t help that we made poor decisions in the final third which helped them as well. At 2-0, it was a lost cause even with 45 mins left. As for the way we play, Klopp used bender and Kehl at BVB as DM`s when he was there in the beginning. he then put in a DLP in the name of Nuri Sahin who was fantastic in that role (not a DM) when they won the league in 2011 and Sahin was Player of the Year. He is doing the same thing with Hendo as in a midfield launch pad for attacks and defending. A specialist DM who only preaks up play, can`t do what hendo does as Hendo is a DM with AM skills, greta engine, good positioning enough defensive qualities and has goals in him. A specialist DM cannot do any of the above and it is perfect for our system. This is why Masche could not usurp Busquets at Barcelona till this day as he is not a specialist DM. he is a DLP.

8.) 08 Oct 2016 08:53:23
Hamilton

Busquets is no DLP and he has / had Xavi / Rakitic starting an attack. Alonso did that deep lying role alongside Vidal and Khadiera at their respective clubs. Hendo is not first clas in his passing range hence we saw majority backpass to lovren against Swansea.
Gerrard could pass the ball but couldn't break up an attack hence we conceded plenty 2 years ago.
There are players who are special and who could do both the roles.

9.) 08 Oct 2016 17:34:21
If Lucas does leave during the winter break or the summer, I would be happier with a dedicated DM in the squad. There's a large diversity of team styles that have to be played across the EPL, the Cups and Europe, and a DM wil be needed against certain teams. I'm not suggesting we change our current style, but rather that we be prepared for any kind of team and style that we have to face. I know Stewart is there, but we need a notch better still.

"Crystal Palace are looking at a striker and it has nothing to do with Liverpool" - ed002

*Palace submit 23 million pound plus 7 million add-ons bid for Benteke*

Is this one of those very rare instances of ed002 being incorrect, or am I just reading his information wrong?

Nick_Bruce_Wayne

{Ed002's Note - Try not to be an embarrassing wanker - Crystal Palace have held discussions with another club about another player. The player in question is also attracting interest from elsewhere.}

1.) 17 Aug 2016 09:52:54
knuckles scraping the floor again ed002 some people I tell ya
Up the pool.

2.) 17 Aug 2016 10:14:53
Ed can you say or not if the other Striker they are looking at is 2nd choice and back up to Benteke or not known? Sorry if its a stupid question.

{Ed002's Note - They want a striker and would like Benteke but Liverpool do not seem keen to sell him to them Hence the are continuing to look around.}

3.) 17 Aug 2016 10:57:56
Ok mate fair enough. Hopefully the clubs can agree a figure/ package. i'm thinking if he stays then we will have to play him in percentages of games.

16 Aug 2016 00:57:53
hey ed001

what do you make of the new reports that Klopp won't bother with signing a new LB? Is he going to use Milner, and then go back into the market in January?

Nick_Bruce_Wayne

{Ed001's Note - haven't I been saying exactly that for a while now?}

1.) 16 Aug 2016 08:25:35
Do you think klopp has ever thought about using milner as a left back
Ed 01?

Only messing, hope it's not to early Edward! 😉.

{Ed001's Note - arggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!!!!!}

2.) 16 Aug 2016 09:11:57
I know you said that about Milner, but it's the January part I'm really asking about!

{Ed002's Note - Teams do not plan for January transfers.}

3.) 16 Aug 2016 10:34:24
I assume James Pearce is wrong on this? He said Klopp didn't want to pay 10 million for Chilwell as he believed Chilwell didn't have enough desire to come to Liverpool.

4.) 16 Aug 2016 15:44:32
Nick, that has been debunked by Ed01 who said Chilwell was all set to come to us and we were his first a choice provided we paid the money, so don`t know what James Pearce is talking about.

{Ed001's Note - Pearce is just acting as a mouthpiece for the club. They want it to look like a decision, rather than a mistake on their part. Chilwell had a number of options but wanted to join us, we messed it up so he decided to stay. He was keen on the move.}

15 Aug 2016 07:05:12
Calls for a defensive midfielder are getting tiring. If we get a DM to play every game, it disrupts what Klopp is trying to do with the squad. He would rather play with two centre mids sharing a defensive and attacking workload, rather than 3 mids - 2 CMs and 1 DM- which sacrifices a forward player up front. When did he ever play with a dedicated defensive midfielder at Dortmund? If he did, it wasn't that frequent.

Nick_Bruce_Wayne

1.) 15 Aug 2016 07:23:28
I would think Stewart is the DM, when klopp sees a need for a more defensive minded midfielder.

2.) 15 Aug 2016 08:22:14
Actually he did often play with a dedicated defensive midfielder, ever heard of a chap called Sven Bender?

3.) 15 Aug 2016 08:40:08
I don't think Bender played the role of DM at Dortmund for Klopp.

He is a defensive minded player but that does not mean that he was given the specific tactical role of DM in that system.

4.) 15 Aug 2016 09:39:41
Meh, he didn't really play a typical DM role.

5.) 15 Aug 2016 10:01:27
Didn't he play that exact way yesterday /?

Hendo S the dm and lal and wij the two in front of him. Does anyone actually watch the games or just the transfer market and scores?

6.) 15 Aug 2016 12:14:06
3 ALL 👌.

08 Aug 2016 11:35:21
Hi Ed001

What do you make of Emre Can going into this season? In my opinion, needs to be given a simplified role, I don't know if he's got the game smarts to be an attacking genius like he kind of tries to be sometimes. When his game isn't simple, he overplays himself too much by running into dead ends and getting positionally caught out.

I'm hoping he can do a Kante kind of role, which is just simply disrupting opposition attacks, and then quickly advancing the ball forward initiating the team's attacks. He has all the attributes to do that, he just needs a little discipline.

Do you have any word on what Klopp is trying to do with him this season?

cheers.

Nick_Bruce_Wayne

{Ed001's Note - Can is more of a forward runner, more of the way Yaya played at Citeh, than a breaking up attacks guy. He just does not have the defensive discipline or positional sense for it. That is why we were wide open in midfield without Hendo, who is very good positionally. Can needs to be played in front of a defensive midfielder, if anything.

Kante was able to break up play and get forward to support, Can is just not physically able to put in the workrate, even if he had the positional sense to spot the attacks. There is no point trying to force him into a role that he is unsuited to, just hold back the fullbacks or put a proper defensive mid in there. Then he can have the freedom to make those marauding runs.}

1.) 08 Aug 2016 12:27:51
Edd001 where do you see Wijnaldum playing mate? I assumed he was brought in to be a box to box midfielder.

{Ed001's Note - I am expecting him to play a few different roles to be honest.]

2.) 08 Aug 2016 12:46:06
Id like to see can and Stewart given s chance together. Both big strong lads, won't get bullied, and Stewart naturally holds the middle.

3.) 08 Aug 2016 12:51:28
Can really needs to start keeping control of his temper too, he loses it far to often and picks up ridiculous yellows.

4.) 08 Aug 2016 13:42:41
To be fair, a few of our senior centre midfielders are big lads!

Hendo is 6ft, Can is 6ft1, Stewart is 6ft.

I don't think their is an argument that our midfield lacked strength or power. I think our midfield lacked goals. Something which Grujic and Wijnaldum will bring. The only other thing it lacked last season in particular was positional discipline, but with Henderson fit and Stewart looking every bit ready to play if required we now have a very good midfield. We are a left back and a right back away from what I would consider a perfect summer in terms of signings. If we just get a left back though I'll still be pleased.

5.) 08 Aug 2016 13:54:01
MK - true, except Hendo was injured for our key games last season, Stewart wasn't trusted on an experience basis which left Can standing alongside the fairly short forms of Milner and Allen. We now have created a deeper well of pace and physical power (not to mention height) that mean the inevitable toll of a season will not deplete our ability to be versatile.

6.) 08 Aug 2016 14:41:58
I'd personally give grujic a chance against arsenal. Looks very promising and is a goal threat from midfield.

7.) 08 Aug 2016 14:43:14
Fans of other teams fear Emre Can over our other midfielders. I'm constantly getting told how amazing Can is by United, Spurs, Everton and City fans.
None of them rate/ fear Henderson and Milner in the slightest. Funny. But That's from an outside perspective.

8.) 08 Aug 2016 15:07:48
I am personally not a huge fan of Stewart and feel posters make a lot more of him than there is just because he is a young lad.
He makes far too many mistakes getting caught on the ball in our own half, and doesn't have a very good range of passing either.
A good lad no doubt, but let's call a spade a spade, and not a world beater. Reminds me of how everyone on here thought Coady was the next Big thing a couple of Seasons ago.

9.) 08 Aug 2016 15:22:18
I don't think you have to be a world beater to do a job that's required of you. Kante was plucked from oblivion and see how well respected he is now. Stewart may not be a world beater now, but you can't fault his application and his desire to get better. It's not an exaggeration that he can become a highly rated defensive midfielder in the near future. For a player who used to be a full back few years ago, I think he deserves any praise that comes his way.

10.) 08 Aug 2016 16:03:47
MK, Stewart is 5'6. have you actually watched him play or are you just going on Wikipedia?

11.) 08 Aug 2016 15:47:10
Thanks ed :) Also, what do you think of that fitness coach Raymond Verheijen, that albeit well-credentialed big mouth who criticises every manager under the sun on twitter?

{Ed001's Note - funny you should mention him, I had a conversation not so long ago with another coach who knows him well. We are both in agreement that he is just a brilliant self-publicist who is doing well in marketing his coaching product. The problem is that the product is not a good product, imo. Every training system should be individual, as you are working with individuals. So any of these systems people follow are no better than fad diets. He just criticises all and sundry to create more exposure to sell more of his system.}

12.) 08 Aug 2016 16:12:58
He seems to advocate this idea that players shouldn't be trained while they are under fatigue. He was tweeting about how muscles are 'slaves of the brain' (which I don't deny), and said 'tired brain > slower reactions > more contact injuries and twists'. So would I be right in saying that he's a fan of that stupid 'red zone/ green zone' conditioning method? Pull players from training when they are in the red fatigue zone?

He seems to be overlooking that players need to be pushed while their brains are tired, while their muscles are tired, so they can increase their base fitness level. They need to learn how to play under mental and physical fatigue during a match. He then predictably slammed how we played against Mainz 24 hours after smashing Barca, and noted Grujic's ankle twist of how stupid it was, 'because he was mentally and physically tired and shouldn't be playing'.

{Ed001's Note - very much so, like I said, he is just a self-publicist with a flawed method. And I totally agree, players lack fitness due to this stupidity of the red zone. Liverpool used to play a lot more games, the players used to go out and have a bevvy and still had the basic fitness to play many more times due to being pushed harder in training. Shankly's sweat box, for example, used to put them through a far harder routine than anything in modern football. It was compared to torture, it was that tough on them. Because of the way they were pushed, they were much fitter than the modern day player, who is now trained like a sprinter, even though the league is a marathon.}

13.) 08 Aug 2016 16:35:04
Exactly ed, exactly. The guy thinks that footballers are sprinters. Sprinters don't through fatigue like footballers do.

What's your opinion of playing two matches 24 hours apart anyway? And how Klopp managed it? I assume he started some the same players twice in a row just to build their fitness levels while under fatigue?

{Ed001's Note - I don't have a problem with it, players should be able to manage it, especially during preseason, so long as they get r&r afterwards for their body to rebuild itself. They will be better for it, if you ask me. I don't know how it was managed though, I avoid taking notice of this time, you can end up getting false ideas of players due to not knowing their fitness levels.}

14.) 08 Aug 2016 16:53:11
Surely you watched our game against Barcelona at least? Really missed out on something if you didn't. Yes, only preseason, but still players like Mane were superb.

{Ed001's Note - no interest in moneymaking matches with no meaning.}

15.) 08 Aug 2016 18:00:05
Rayman, not a chance Stewart is 5'6, I'd say he's slightly above average height, probably 6ft! Not sure who you are confusing him with?

16.) 08 Aug 2016 18:58:11
No rayman, Stewart is 6ft haha. 183cm to be exact.

If you think he is 5ft6 then you definitely haven't seen him play!

17.) 08 Aug 2016 21:09:35
Transfermarkt says he's 183 cm, 6ft in old money. He's not 5'6" in a million years. I'll go with that as they're reasonably reliable. I'm not sure he's 100% ready. But also he strikes me as a hard worker, so maybe with a bit of work he could be the defensive midfielder we need he needs to concentrate more and work on his awareness but I wouldn't write him off.

18.) 08 Aug 2016 22:32:09
The other reason you want to push people when they are tired is that is when you get to see how mentally strong they are. And they do as well. So when they are feeling knackered in a match, the coach and the players know what they are capable of and can push on.

On a side note, FIFA did some studies into the affect of fatigue and backing up on players. They found that if the players played a match within 2 (I vague as to whether this is the correct number) days, they would be able to play at their normal levels for about 2/ 3 of the second match but then their output would drop to about 70%. So people backing up from Champions League should be Ok but explains why Europa can smash teams. Note those figures are rubbery because I don't have the study at hand.

I am really excited by Ojo and I hope that Klopp finds a way to use him. People bang on about Rashford and Iheanacho, but I reckon Ojo leaves them in his wake.

What do you think of this idea that United 'won' a point? I don't buy it. 'Good' draws can only be justified by your league position, and they are 7th, 3 points off fourth with a very tough upcoming schedule in comparison to their rivals. If they draw at Chelsea next week too and everyone else wins, is that also a 'good' draw, just because it was at Stamford Bridge, despite the fact they're even further behind the top 4 with Arsenal, Everton and Spurs still to come?

strongly disagree, it would have made a world of difference, we were already looking better when Lallana came on. Who did we have in midfield? Hendo, a very rusty Can and Coutinho out of position. You don't think it would have made a difference if two of our best players thus far this season were on the pitch from the start? Midfield is exactly where United stifled our game in the first half.

Klopp did not sign Karius to be his number one goalkeeper so he could wrap him in cotton wool away from the pressure of being an LFC keeper and omit him from the starting 11 against United. With all due respect, that is just absurd. If you want Karius to develop, then denying him the experience of an intense, high octane fixture is just stupid.
