Ed002, I know you have covered this quite a lot for us all and it's greatly appreciated but with lots of reports coming out surrounding Williams and Barcelona being the number 1 deal for them to do, where does this put Luis Diaz in all of this?
Surely Barcelona can't afford both and if he has seemingly burned his bridges with us, how do you see this one playing out? Reconciliation and a new contract or sold to the highest bidder?
{Ed002's Note - Barcelona don't want both. It leaves Diaz rather stuck.}
1.) 15 Jul 2024 17:44:23
I'd prefer to keep diaz and sell nunez in an ideal world. If salah stays play him upfront, diaz on right, gakpo on left. jota+ danns as support and another pacy winger. If slot prefers his wingers playing wide as opposed to cutting in i think possibly help diaz playing on right and getting toeards byline, a lot of last season he cutting in from left into trouble and ended up going backways.
2.) 15 Jul 2024 18:39:31
Don’t. Want Diaz to stay he’s pushing for a move get rid.
3.) 15 Jul 2024 19:27:58
His father's comments have been v poor considering support lfc gave the player and his family, but in fairness to diaz u will always get 100% off him on pitch. his output as regards goals and assists would need to be better but I don't see where you will get a better player than him at reasonable money. Gordon a good player, not a great 1 and at reported price of £75m he serious price and is he improvement on diaz at all? 1 benefit gordon would have is that he wants badly to play for us which good but I'm not so sure he any better than diaz as a player.
4.) 16 Jul 2024 08:44:02
Let’s hope Diaz’s dad was one of the Colombian fans Nunez punched ?.
5.) 16 Jul 2024 09:03:04
So you’d sell someone that constantly out performs Diaz in goals and assists? How strange.
6.) 16 Jul 2024 23:02:11
Diaz wants out, great player but get him out if he wants to go. End of. Sick of these players who come here for a stop gap. } can't handle the prem more like.
10 Aug 2023 11:03:47
Ed i know it may be a bit of a random name but I'm sure you've mentioned him before, do we hold any interest in Alan Varela and would be be a viable but untested option for us?
{Ed002's Note - He is moving elsewhere.}
1.) 10 Aug 2023 11:12:43
Thanks Ed much appreciated as always! Have a good day.
27 Apr 2018 20:27:33
Eds or anybody else have any info on Mane and his trip to Spire over a supposed thigh injury?
{Ed001's Note - he got a knock according to the club and is a slight doubt for tomorrow. Probably won't be risked I would think.}
1.) 27 Apr 2018 20:54:57
The official Liverpool website has information on Mane, as does the Liverpool Echo, or you could just Google Sadio Mane.
2.) 27 Apr 2018 21:45:19
Thanks ED! Smeg off Rimmer 😋 the info I read was pretty vague just checking there was nothing too sinister.
11 Apr 2014 08:04:47
Ed02 Ivan Rakitic, i've watched him quite a lot this season and everytime I have I've been very impressed. Now I know you have said Athletico Madrid, Chelsea, United, Lazio and maybe Liverpool would be interested in him if available at the right price but how likely is he to move? Also is the rumoured interest from Real Madrid true and if so do you feel this could be his most likely destination? I would really like to see him at Liverpool next season a much better player than our rumoured target Dani Pajero in my opinion. Thanks Ed
{Ed002's Note - Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United, Lazio and Liverpool would be interested if Rakitic were available at a sensible price. Real Madrid are interested but have made no direct approach to Sevilla. Of more significance are discussions that have opened with his agent regarding a move to Juventus as a replacement for Paul Pogba and/or Arturo Vidal. These discussions resulted in the rescheduling of a planned contract extension meeting.}

Now the dust has settled a bit for me although very soft Virj should have been sent off yesterday in my opinion, I know the rule and I know he takes the ball but he comes through the man to take it and given the pass that was played and the line it was running on Isak would have had an opportunity on goal whether it was a true goal scoring opportunity or not we will never know because he was fouled during the development of the play.
Carraghers assessment of Virjs poor handling of the situation from a defensive perspective was correct but I do still think he should have gone it was my feeling at the time and still is now. The more worrying thing for me was his behaviour afterwards, I know the standard of reffing is somewhat absurd at the moment and yesterday's debacle would have wound anybody up but his aggressive demeanour, foul language and refusal to get off the pitch is going to bite us in the arse more than anything I feel. Not how a captain should be acting in my opinion, determined willing to fight for any cause etc but as the leader you need to keep your decorum about you.
Something needs to be done about the standard of refereeing in this country and how the governing body rules this beautiful game but so do a lot of things in this world.
1.) 28 Aug 2023 19:55:13
I would have given a yellow but it was a stupid lazy challenge and he was last man so can see why it was given as a red. Should have just done the basics and followed his man.
2.) 28 Aug 2023 20:36:12
The problem with refereeing is that they are a professional body beyond reproach. You can’t criticise them or hold them to account, we are no closer to having live in game commentary either. They need to be 100 % transparent and accountable, only then will they improve. You only need to look at Mike Deans comments to know how bad and deeply rooted the problem is.
3.) 28 Aug 2023 21:24:04
VVD was a red if it was the other way round we would all say red. My biggest concern with VVD was before then when he chose not to make a challenger on Almirón when he broke down there right and the VVD of old would have gone over and just taken the ball off him but he just did nothing just remained of last season.
4.) 28 Aug 2023 21:48:34
Definitely not a red based on this year's guidance unless you say he made no attempt to play the ball. Maybe you can debate if contacting the player first means it wasn't an attempt to play the ball, but I'd argue against that and also argue that goes against the spirit of the guidance given to clarify this situation. It's still just poor reffing for me.
5.) 28 Aug 2023 22:45:14
I don’t think it’s a red. I’m dubious whether it’s even a foul.
We’ve all heard the refs talk about initiating contact and for me Isak steps across the line that Virgil is taking, takes contact and goes down. Virgil clearly gets the ball. It’s not from behind it’s from the side. Yes he gets the player too but it’s a contact sport. Did he go for the ball? Yes. Did he get the ball? Yes.
How many times do we see Salah get the ball and a defender clatter through him from behind and get the ball? Hardly ever given as a free kick.
Utd’s keeper can even clatter players without getting anywhere near the ball!
It’s the inconsistency that winds me up. You will see loads of challenges like that throughout a season and I will bet there won’t be another red card shown.
If you know the game then you instinctively know when it’s a red card situation. With both Macca and Virgil’s challenges I was completely caught by surprise when the red came out. Neither looked anything like a red for me.
6.) 28 Aug 2023 22:58:37
Good post that beckers.
7.) 28 Aug 2023 23:38:38
good point Beckers. I think that is why the Virgil one feels even less of a red cos you expect a red card to be for really bad challenges.
8.) 28 Aug 2023 23:44:40
I think if you remember back to the Men’s World Cup last year, refereeing and VAR was rarely an issue and complemented. Proving VAR can be unobtrusive if used competently. Meanwhile only three weeks into the season multiple controversial calls, no consistency and games results hence competition integrity at risk. It’s just a case of competency. We should examine bringing in foreign refs and explayers to help VAR refs.
9.) 29 Aug 2023 01:11:24
Beckers pretty much summed it up. It's going to be a long season the more these decisions happen.
10.) 29 Aug 2023 02:13:14
The guidelines haven’t changed. The triple punishment is only applicable inside the box because the foul results in a free shot (penalty) and not a more difficult fk.
Whether one thinks it’s from behind our side the tackle comes from behind Isak. VVD’s positioning was terrible he allows him to roll him, kicks through the attacker to get the ball.
Before the replies begin ask yourself if it was the other way around would you want the defender sent off.
11.) 29 Aug 2023 05:48:03
Beckers I tend to agree with you most of the time mate, but there’s a difference between initiating contact (which I read as trying to create a collision yourself) and protecting the ball, which Isak is entitled to do. VVD clearly takes the player before the ball down his having to tackle from the wrong side, which is a free kick offense. Given Isak would otherwise be through in a 1-1 with the keeper, it’s a red IMO even if perhaps a slightly harsh outcome.
I do still fully agree with your inconsistency question though. Gordon’s push on Trent is a good example of an obvious piece of foul play ignored, and I believe may have figured in Trent and VVDs sense of injustice and their subsequent reactions when decisions went against them (even if they were still wrong to respond) .
12.) 29 Aug 2023 09:48:46
SGRed, I agree. The initial problem is not whether it is a red cos the challenge was bad. It is deemed a red cos it was the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity. Now we can debate whether it was a clear opportunity but that is up to the interpretation of the ref. He took the player before the ball and that is a foul and the ref deemed it a clear goalscoring opportunity hence, red card, IMO.
As for consistency, we all await that with baited breathe cos even in that game, our players like Trent were getting done for the exact same things Newcastle players were doing and nothing was done by a ref who is clearly not up to the job.
Now IMO, the real prob here is that VVD did not play this right, IMO. He could have just engaged with Isak when he receives the ball and occupy him. If he scores from that tight angle then, great play. As the captain, he has to recognise the situation and know he can't be rash nor use his head cos he could get done by a ref who was clearly out of his depth. He needs to do better and not hurt his team by being rash. Good thing is the staff and the players played a blinder and rescued the 3 points. Just my take.
13.) 29 Aug 2023 09:59:54
It was a clear foul. Van Dijk went through him to get the ball. Van Dijk was the wrong side of Isak and panicked.
14.) 29 Aug 2023 10:09:38
All this talk of him being 1 on 1 with the keeper is driving me crazy. If vvd did make the challenge he's still in position to defend and it'd be 1 on 2. For me that's why it's not a red; vvd was defending and got the player while making the challenge. Fine, but by both this year's guidance and common sense, as long as it's not excessive, it should be a yellow. Especially because if he doesn't make the challenge he's still there to defend and force him out wide.
Also totally agree with Becker: the inconsistency is the problem. We've seen defenders take out salah, Diaz, etc by going through the player, no foul is even given, and it's justified because the defender "got the ball". Its the double standard that people (and I) are upset about.
05 Aug 2020 17:18:58
ED001 and ED002 I have a question for you both if you don't mind, well more of what your opinion is really.
With Man City close to signing their 2nd player of the window and reports stating they want up to another 5 players what are your thoughts on the way this sort of stockpiling is done more and more by cash rich clubs or the bigger clubs and do you think more players will eventually get fed up of being squad players in years to come opting to go elsewhere for more game time rather than money as football continues to evolve? We're obviously seeing signs of it now with the younger players getting frustrated with lack of playing time but the age bracket above seem happy to be a squad player for decent money rather than want to play regular football. I am fully aware that it's a squad game these days and gone are the days of squads of 16 but I just feel this kind of behaviour ruins football as a whole a little bit for me. So much promise thrown by the wayside in some cases.
Obviously Liverpool have been guilty of this too and stifled some promising careers it's not me having a dig at other clubs or being envious I just think it's ridiculous and I always think that if I had been a professional footballer I would have always went where the game time was.
Squad and home grown measures are currently in force but what else do you think could be done in the game to stop this kind of thing happening so much?
I'd love an ideology that you have to produce the talent yourself with stricter restrictions on bringing in or poaching youth players from all over the world just to build your academy up and limiting the number of first team transfers a season.
Maybe I don't know enough about it all maybe I'm a dreamer but I'd love to see a world where more players come through the ranks after clubs have put so much time and effort into them and go on to have fantastic playing careers.
{Ed002's Note - Clearly you are missing something. Manchester City can only have the same size senior squad as Liverpool and the other sides - so it is hardly "stockpiling".
1.) 05 Aug 2020 18:13:11
Chelsea did seem to buy players just so other teams couldn't sign them in the beginning of the roman days. Hence Ian we rights boy.
2.) 05 Aug 2020 18:24:00
Robbiesline the point of this question isn't to have a pop at other clubs, it's to find opinions on how squads and football in general can evolve over the next few years for more talent and local talent to make it into the first team.
Don't drag it there please because it will end up a free for all of abuse for the Eds and other posters.
Im genuinely interested in what other people's views on it.
{Ed002's Note - Clubs will take the "local" route (as used extensively by Southampton in a fan shape covering youth leagues in the South, and by some of London clubs with the likes of Senrab) as money erodes from the game, be it through a breakaway, a continued pandemic, investors drying up etc..}
3.) 05 Aug 2020 18:45:43
Yeah Ed I remember you saying something along the lines of football being more reigonalised here if a breakaway of the elite ever happend which would sort out some of the issues of my point with more locally sourced players playing for the clubs that don't break away as a whole.
Do you think the Elite are too far gone for something like that to ever happen now and even when they do break away they will just continue to cherry pick the best from around the world rather than maximising the use of their academies?
{Ed002's Note - Most of the "elite" sides have good academies that they look to supplement with better players from other clubs.
The pandemic has shown that there are too many clubs who are financially close to the edge. There remains a plan taht eventually all clubs will have to operate completely within their means, so owners will not be allowed to supplement transfers but will be able to update the infrastructure etc.. That means player recruitment will need to be organis - as it used to be.}
4.) 05 Aug 2020 19:29:05
Thats interesting, be good to see how clubs evolve going that way if the plan comes to fruition! Thanks Ed.
5.) 05 Aug 2020 21:17:15
There are only 20 clubs in the top flight. And only what? Would you call elite. If your young and amazing at football, way better than the other lads at school, and best in your wee league, you're going to dream of playing at Wembley. There aren't enough places for all the talent.
And when an exceptional young player makes it all the way to liverpool, he's not only up against the other young lads for whom this is a dream, you're up against men, professionals for whom football is a living. So unless you're the real deal, you've no chance. And even if you are the real deal, then perhaps the man in your way is a fan favourite, you hear the kop sing his name at full pelt with pride. It takes more than skill it takes mentality too.
Would a thing like some European teams have, like a Liverpool B team in the league make more room and give more exposure to the youngsters?
There's not enough room for everyone, you have to take your chances.
6.) 06 Aug 2020 07:10:43
I'm quite happy to back to the organic system of financing transfers. We didn't do too badly during the days prior to the Prem and clubs leveraging transfers on future earnings.
20 Aug 2018 22:31:37
Just seen the news about Salah, sending him all the luck, strength and support in the world to get through whatever it is he's going through such a top bloke across all the sites not just ours! In my thoughts and prayers buddy YNWA!
05 Aug 2018 13:04:30
I know he's only a kid in footballing terms and it's been pre season but I have been really impressed with Curtis Jones, I hope he has a breakthrough season he looks quite the player to me!
1.) 05 Aug 2018 13:18:36
Was at the game yesterday and he really impressed me too. Fabinho did well when he came on. Good range of passing and moved the ball quickly.
2.) 05 Aug 2018 13:35:27
What a player this kid is going to be.
3.) 05 Aug 2018 14:44:05
It’s the year 2025 Liverpool captain Curtis Jones lifts the premier league. The first under Gerrard the city is omen.
4.) 05 Aug 2018 14:54:44
When will peole learn.
5.) 05 Aug 2018 17:33:16
The three kids I would like to play first team under Klopp, Camacho, Philips and Curtis
Jones.
6.) 05 Aug 2018 18:26:15
Mchesi - the problem is you can probably also add Woodburn and Wilson to that list of top young players IMO, with Adam Lewis not far behind.
While it’s exciting to see their talent, we also need to recognise that only the truly exceptional like Mbappe and TAA can make the step to PL so young, and it’s unlikely all of these are that good. Most would be better of taking their time to develop in the Championship on loans before playing for Liverpool and steppinng up to the premier League (and we’d also get the benefit of seeing how they get on) .
7.) 05 Aug 2018 19:20:47
Actually been really impressed by Camacho. He’s hard working, quick, skilful and looks like he could be a very good option at right back.
8.) 05 Aug 2018 21:23:47
What about Brewster?
9.) 05 Aug 2018 22:05:04
Brewsters been injured and hasn't been able to show what he can do, he will need to spend the first few months of the season in the u23s maybe and then he might get the chance to impress in the first team. He's young enough though so I would expect to see him more next pre season once his injury is behind him and he's played some football again.
18 Jul 2018 18:14:31
Absolutely gutted for the Ox, hope he can recover fully and come back stronger and hopefully make an appearance or 2 by the end of the season!
20 Aug 2024 19:39:44
How do you see it panning out Ed? Obviously signed some superb players, how long before the team starts gelling together? Going to be very dangerous when you get it right! Cole Palmer is some player, think he's destined for the very top!
{Ed002's Note - They will figure it out.}
15 Aug 2024 23:00:10
Ed if you don't mind me asking, how do you see our future under FSG and do you think they will succeed with the multi club ownership? Or do you think they will consider selling us sooner rather than later?
{Ed002's Note - There are no plans to sell Liverpool at present. They are considering multi-club ownership but their options in France have dried up. They would consider an MLS team but right now are focussing on two other opportunities.}
14 Aug 2024 21:37:06
Maybe he wanted to go for regular first team football?
14 Aug 2024 19:42:51
Midfields are one of the biggest jigsaws in football, ours is good and has capacity to get much better. However we are missing a certain kind of player for balance, have been for a while regardless of tactics and it shows in whoever plays because they're doing things that don't come natural to them and may never will.
Not saying we do need to go out and panic buy for the sake of it but we do need something eventually to complete the puzzle.
14 Aug 2024 16:07:48
Where do we donate the Gin?
23 Aug 2024 20:34:22
We'll win the league, with or without signings. Back the team you all claim to love, stop being so pessimistic and enjoy the ride. We are Liverpool tra la la la!
19 Aug 2024 14:40:25
Not having a go either by the way.
19 Aug 2024 14:39:57
Just an observation, but we're asking questions about changes our manager made which positively changed our performance and the result? Regardless of how well we may think of a player, the team comes first, Arne is the manager and identified that he thought his concerns would be addressed by changing certain personnel. It worked and we won the game, despite what we may think it was the correct decision, we played better and won?
15 Aug 2024 14:50:55
I do also think we forget that most of these players don't think of the club and love it as us fans do. Yeah maybe he does owe us a bit more respect etc but at the end of the day he's living his life and guiding his career as he sees fit, nobody else matters but yourself in reality within modern society.
I'm contracted in my job, I still look for new ones every day the only difference is my arl fella isn't the one telling the world I fancy it elsewhere?
13 Aug 2024 22:46:09
Exactly what I'm hearing Faith, John Henry is FEWMIN! So much so that if we don't sign 1 player he's winding the club up. Done, we're going to cease to exsist and he's blaming Hughes, want him hung draw and quartered outside the Liver Building at dawn with Joe Anderson watching so he can pass on the baton of success to the Bluenoses!
