Just wondering if we still have an interest in Malcolm from Bordeaux? Of what I know, he looks good on both wings and as an attacking midfielder. Thanks.

Dar71

{Ed002's Note - No it has gone now. There was a further offer for him from another side but it was rejected and he will likely stay.}

Just a post for the banter page, sorry it's not specifically Liverpool oriented but about youth football.
I got talking on whatsapp to a friend of mine last night, who is a grassroots level coach. He had been speaking to a Burnley coach who had scouted him as a youth. Told him the money in youth football is shocking. I'm sure someone out there will correct me, but this coach said to my mate, who is based in Wales, that if a Tier 1 club wants to sign a promising U12s player from TNS for example, being a one club rule in existence there at that club, that they could pay as much as 30k in compensation for said child. At another academy further up the country who don't have a one club rule, they can get that player for free.
That compensation goes to the club for training the kid, although I know these kids are having to pay the clubs for their training - up to £500 at one club near us, whereas its £175 a season at others. Shouldnt the compensation be split somehow between the club and the parents who have already paid for his training and travel?
Seems as if some of these academies are not just taking the best players, but the best players who's parents can afford a hefty subscription for the season and travel expenses.

Dar71

{Ed025's Note - good post that Dar, well done mate..

1.) 19 Jul 2021 20:33:43
Cheers ed025. This scout was disgusted by it, and rightly so. Seems as if these academies are happy to use these kids and their parents as an easy source of income. We all want our kids to have the best coaching etc, but I'd thought the best kids would have the privilege of free coaching.

2.) 19 Jul 2021 20:33:50
Is a good post Dar, maybe all the big clubs should be paying back at grass roots if they're taking some local clubs players on. I played a tiny bit of youth footy back in the day, was rubbish at it, but even 1K for one of our lads would have paid for so much equipment. I definitely agree compensation to the parents too. My mum and Dad used to drive my Brother all over Preston and Lancashire to play and couldn't have been cheap!

{Ed0666's Note - I know Preston very well used to live there. Had a massive brawl there which was something out of Gangs of New York! Let’s just say it was sons of immigrants 1 fascist scumbag thugs 0

3.) 19 Jul 2021 21:35:18
My lad has played for academies in North wales and the fees are extortionate added to the cost of driving 100+ miles some weeks to play in games. The 2 main Welsh academies in Flintshire are £700+ per year for subs and kit.

4.) 19 Jul 2021 21:50:37
RH18, it's what parents do isn't it. don't want to deprive their kids a chance if you can help it.
Two lads from my lads' team have signed for the academy just over the border in Wales. they'll then travel an hour and a half to one of their away matches. And where I'm from originally in the topmost part of N. Wales, there have been lads picked up over the years by the premier league north west clubs, but you are looking at 90 minutes travel there, training, then 90 minutes back on a school night. Now I think you aren't allowed to be any further than 60 minutes away.

5.) 19 Jul 2021 22:42:16
Last couple of years playing here in Queensland and the cost on the young players was awful. I was semi-pro so got paid a bit but felt bad for some young lads knocking on the door from the youth set up.
Some of these kids families moved to Brisbane from the regions as the distances to travel are huge. The parents found new jobs, rented a house etc and still had to fork out about the equivalent of 1600 pound a year just for fees. As some of the kids were under 18 one of the parents would usually travel independently to games all up and down the east coast at huge cost. I only ever saw 1 players come through and actually make a living at A-League level.

With Pep Ljinders saying that the Ox has been training well and looking sharp, they seem to want him back out on the flanks and playing that false 9 that he seemed to look ok at towards the last few games of the last season. Do you think that we are possibly happy to go ahead with him pushing mane/ salah/ jota/ elliot this season and put the hunt for a forward player on hold until next year, prioritising a midfield signing instead?

Dar71

1.) 18 Jul 2021 20:35:36
If it means holding out to payout haalands contract next year then I ok with that.

2.) 18 Jul 2021 20:53:15
OP, I wouldn’t read too much into what coaches/ players say during preseason. They are asked questions like”Who has impressed you the most in preseason” or “Are you looking for expanded yikes for any of the players? ” Or things like that. The manager or coach has to say something, right even if it is true regarding Ox cos Klopp said the same thing after he came on for Bobbie and scored at Burnley. It doesn’t mean we will or won’t sign a forward especially since Ed2 has said we are looking at forwards currently . Enjoy the preseason cos I’m fired up for the new season regardless.

3.) 18 Jul 2021 21:26:19
Totally agree with you OliRed, seen it too many times before, but I think it would be nice seeing him have an injury free, uninterrupted pre-season for the first time in a while to begin with, and I'd much prefer seeing his enthusiasm and energy out there than blowing most of the money that will hopefully be sponged out of whichever clubs out there, on a forward player who might not be as talented.
I think his only problem for me is staying fit. If he does, then there's still a decent forward thinking player there.

4.) 18 Jul 2021 21:42:59
I just hope he gets some luck with fitness and avoids injury.

5.) 18 Jul 2021 21:52:59
Dar71, Indus not make that comment to dig Ox out, just to be clear. I don’t know if you were on this forum when Ox signed BUT I did not want Ox signed. I was fully against it die to his more than patchy record at Arsenal and felt he had stagnated.

Now after he arrived and after biding his time, he started ripping it up until that devastating injury vs Roma in the CL three years ago. He won me over (and Klopp shut me up forever on transfer choices) . I love Ox to death and still think he can off a lot. Remember only the front three scored more goals than him in out title winning season.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, Ox was fully fit near a full season after he recovered from the injury that wiped out his preseason so clearly his fitness record is improving. Klopp prolly didn’t want to play him due to the imbalance of the team due to injuries. Therefore if he can stay fit as you say, I am onboard with keeping him cos we know what he can do when fully fit. At CF or in the Bobbie role, tho? We will have to see.

6.) 18 Jul 2021 22:05:54
Until he does it on the pitch week in week out, I’ll believe it.

7.) 18 Jul 2021 22:09:39
Yes, been on the site from when it was just transfer rumours :)
I can remember him splitting peoples thoughts of him joining at the time. It's always good when players prove us wrong. I wonder when keita will choose his time?! Lol.

8.) 18 Jul 2021 23:13:35
Dad, Ox has been deeply unlucky with injury, but there’s no doubt to his efforts when he is fit. His commitment and work ethic are unquestionable. Keita has never looked arsed even when fit.

9.) 18 Jul 2021 23:48:03
Honestly Ox is a good player and i hope we keep him. Seems like a nice lad who gets the club and the fans and works very hard. His injury issues have been incredibly unfortunate and i’m holding out that there’s still more to come from him.

Can’t say i believe any of the above applies to Keita though.

10.) 19 Jul 2021 00:07:02
I prefer Ox in midfield rather than playing in the front three. Buy another attacker instead and let Ox offer cover in midfield and a good option from the bench would be my preference.

{Ed0666's Note - agreed

11.) 19 Jul 2021 02:18:30
He's made of crisps.

{Ed0666's Note - what flavor?

12.) 19 Jul 2021 06:14:26
Oli Red. have you always been Oli Red?

13.) 18 Jul 2021 23:30:54
The alarms bells rang for me with keita as soon as he signed. His first pre season tour out to America and he missed, if I remember correctly, two friendlies against Utd and City due to a stiff neck that he suffered on the flight over?!
After the promise he showed in Germany and the wait for him, he's been such a let down. I just hope if he stays around that because he's friends with Konate, that he doesn't lead him astray.
Let's hope it's the other way around and konate gets him to finally pull his gold plated finger out of his hole.

I noticed Ben Woodburn turned out for the U23s today. Was he recalled or was it Sheffield United who sent him back, anyone know? Didn't seem to be in the squad recently there was he.

Dar71

1.) 21 Oct 2018 18:33:34
Not been playing at Sheffield United at all, so he came back to Liverpool to get some much needed game time under his belt (played 64 mins) and he headed back to Sheffield United afterwards. So he is still on loan there.

2.) 21 Oct 2018 19:06:40
I was wondering what had happened to him. I noticed he wasn't getting game time at Sheffield, and also didn't feature in the recent Wales squad v Ireland. Started off so brightly for LFC, and Wales, so hope this is just a blip in his career, and he goes on to become a real asset.

3.) 21 Oct 2018 19:18:30
How old is he, 19 I think? the lads got plenty of time to shine, with Liverpool? who really knows but given half the chance I see him doing really well, good luck to the lad.

4.) 21 Oct 2018 19:19:34
Interesting Lemuel, I didn't realize the club could do that with a player on loan. Thanks.

5.) 21 Oct 2018 21:34:50
If a loan player isn’t in the most recent match day squad he can be selected for the u23’s (not sure if that’s just an EFL rule) an interesting rule but should always guarantee playing time for the younger lads in particular.

Harry Wilson starts for Wales again today against Uruguay. Good experience for him at least and against decent opposition.

Shame to see Pep Lijnders leave Liverpool as he was so highly rated. But good luck to him at his new club.

I hope that they left the door open, if he ever wanted to return .

VVVV, I never said I want us to sign him. His career has been on the decline for a few years, mainly due to injury, and I agree we should stay clear due to that. Again I agree that a mid table club is the best he can hope for now if anyone will risk the large wages he'll ask for. All I'll say is, he promised a lot when younger and was a decent player for arsenal and wales injuries aside.

Aaron Ramsey was a decent player at Arsenal, scoring 20+ goals in one season if I remember correctly. He is injury prone no doubt, but remember before you say he's rubbish that he had a horrific leg break that left his career on the brink at a young age. Takes a lot to get over an injury like that.

It's nice to know we have these kind of lads at our club. I've been reading a couple of the series of books to my lad about these football stars such as messi, mane and salah, and they all seem to have had that poor upbringing leading, especially to the stories I hear about our lads funding the building of hospitals etc. I think it rubs off on other team members.
On a lesser note, a friend of a friend was part of the liverpool v Wrexham U23s game that was arranged for Harvey Elliots warm up match the other day, said he was brilliant after the game, gave his boots to the young Wrexham CB, and shook hands with all the squad and staff.
Lets hope he keeps his feet on the ground.

Anyone think this will be our captain Hendo's last season as a first team starter? Still a integral cog in our team at the moment, but does he start less going into next season?

Dar71

{Ed0666's Note - yeh I think he’ll be managed now and take over the Milner role in the coming seasons.

I remember keita's first preseason with us. He flew out to America to play in our friendlies, but missed two against, I'm sure, City and Utd because he had a stiff neck after the flight. hasn't really got going has it since then. Big shame as he could be a player for us, but as it is, you could probably condense all his performances into 90 minutes for us at the moment.

Dar71

{Ed0666's Note - it’s ironic as he was a beast when playing for Leipzig

I like Jota in that he will try a first time shot more often than not, and not cut back on his other foot.

I think your question can be split into two there, Killer2, as in most improved and most improved from last season, which would probably be about half the squad due to varying reasons.

Any decent playing time in a strong first team line up is hopefully going to benefit and improve Tsimikas and Curtis for me. Elliot will get minutes and shine I'm sure, and the Ox has something to prove. Hopefully there's a hunger and drive in the squad this season that whoever steps in will make sure there's no drop off in team performance.

It's good now that the youngsters get to share the same training pitches as the seniors. If there are some that have the same style as the seniors, how can you not learn and progress from watching how players like virgil, trent, robbo, thiago, fabinho, salah, mane etc perform in training.

I remember the knock on effect that cantona seemed to have at utd with their youngsters coming through. How great would it be to be able to incorporate just one player per season from the youth. Makes for a good return on the funding for the academy and the confidence for the youth to know that you can make it if you try hard enough.
