I still think we need to strengthen. I know we haven’t got any any money and will need to sell but if we have to sell, then sell we must. We have conceded 16 goals in our last 9 games! Our season has started the same way it ended, conceding lots of goals. We need a new top CB and with Keita and Gini being very hit and miss, it makes sense to sell one or both and go for Thiago who I think will add a cutting edge that we lack in terms of creativity. As it stands, I think we will be top 4 this season but I don’t think we will win the league, not unless some changes are made anyway. What do you guys/ gals think?

1.) 15 Sep 2020 14:06:31
Think we definitely need a pacey winger. That’s the priority for me. Shaqiri will likely leave as will one of Brewster or Origi. So we need a good quality winger to come in.

I wouldn’t mind singing a CM perhaps zakaria as he’s young and seems to be a player that would fit our system.

As for a CB I think we need one Matip for me should be VVD’s partner but is injury prone. And Gomez is still learning. I wouldn’t mind adding a decent CB that’s towards the end of their career just add the extra experience to the back line.

2.) 15 Sep 2020 14:43:02
Excellent post and a breath of fresh air on the page. A winger and a center back for this season for me.

3.) 15 Sep 2020 15:46:13
I think your talking nonsense if I’m being honest.
You talk of conceding loads in our last 9 games but one of them games was the first game of the season and 7 where after we had won the league.

4.) 15 Sep 2020 15:57:50
need to get Ragnar back!

5.) 15 Sep 2020 16:12:49
I don't think we should worry too much about the goals just yet, there isn't a back 5 better in the league. Or even one that comes close in my opinion. 1st game of the season, and trent and Henderson only back. We've also decent cover in every position now. I'd usually be calling for another attacking option, but then was watching and waiting for Minamino, origi or someone to be put on against Leeds to inject a bit of energy and something different and it never came. Does it matter if we get someone like Sarr if what we have already don't be called upon when it looked like they were badly needed.

6.) 15 Sep 2020 16:33:09
Is Harry Tyrion Lannister?

7.) 15 Sep 2020 16:34:33
I try not to be too rude here because opinions is what it's about.
. But you point to last season and conceding goals like we had a bad season. We won the league by a country mile. It's one game guys. You all watched it, it was extremely open. You do sound silly pointing to last season and criticising. Did you miss the fireworks.

I can't wait til the open top bus parade, you lot will be running beside it saying "you conceded 9 goals in so and so games, gomez isn't good enough" give me strength. Joe gomez is the best English cb, he is the best cb his age that I know of. Good god, in 3 years he will be absolutely world class. We don't want someone to stand in his way imo. Someone to push him yes. I wouldn't mind a 4th cb, but only if we can get them real cheap.

And gini and keita are now in the same bracket? Hit and miss. Keita maybe (I've not given up. Yet) but gini always plays well. I thought offensively he was excellent. The boys done the business. We need fabhino to get his act together, which he will and we will be fine.

We buy a pacey winger and all of a sudden when does elliot get a game? Coz he has the potential to be world class. Aoc, shaqiri, elliot, origi, minamino. The Ox fast enough for you? Is mino skillful enough for you? Does origi score enough important worldies for you?

If Wilson and brewster are up for sale, what more do you want the club to do?

You lot, the "we need signings" brigade. Do you think Chelsea are a better team than us? Utd? City? If your answer is "no" then what are you yapping about?! If the answer is "yes" (and losing at the bridge will not prove they are better, the league result will. And we'll do them up here anyway) you are simply wrong. Frank will admit to you they are at least 2 or 3 years behind us.

{Ed025's Note - i like reading your posts robbie but you need to lower down the tint on them glasses mate..

8.) 15 Sep 2020 17:23:17
@Robbiesline I agree with some of what you're saying. Your point on Gomez is something I wish a lot more fans would see as I really really like him! Sure he can have his moments of lapses (like for example against Leeds I do think he needs to be a bit further back to cover Trent being higher up the pitch and that's why they both were caught having to make runs back) but he's still young as you said! I think I read a stat there after the game that VVD has made the most errors leading to goals in the league? That could be wrong though I'm not entirely sure? But either way my point is that anyone can make mistakes or have an off day but you don't give up on that player when for the most part they've been rather excellent!

However after that I have to disagree with some of what you've said? Gini for me has significantly dropped off in performances and for me he is the one player in the starting 11 that can be replaced for a better player? I think back to when he first joined and his linkup play with Lallana specifically was fantastic! He chipped in with his fair share of goals and assists. Now yes you can argue that his role has changed since his first/ second season but for me there shouldn't be one player in the starting 11 who's role is to specifically "win the ball back" or "keep the ball" and so on. that's the job our whole midfield does? Henderson and Fabinho do what he does aaaand more? Gini's performances have been quite frustrating in fact? You said he played well offensively against Leeds? I saw him miss a pretty decent chance that I would think he'd bury if he was playing for the Netherlands? I saw him sit around the box yes. but then that left the guys with the ball no option to pass to in our build up? He's 29, into his last year of his contract and I can't say I know why that's the case. But you've got Naby there who yes hasn't performed fantastic considering what we saw at Leipzig, despite it being a different league and system/ style he's playing in, but he's still younger and I've seen some good moments from him to think that with a run of games and confidence he could offer something important to our midfield that Gini does not? Heck I'd be happy starting Jones over Gini, that's how I little confidence I have in him at the moment?

As for the winger situation, I like Elliot yes but he's younger than the other boys and will get his time soon? When you take away our front three you're left with Origi, Minamino, and Elliot/ Shaqiri? For me Ox should play in midfield as that's where I think his better performances have come from? Brewster hasn't got his chance unfortunately and I like him but we can't rely on that when we don't know what's going to happen with him? Shaqiri doesn't get his opportunities and I don't know why? Maybe it's his training, maybe he doesn't do enough off the ball for the team when he plays? I do quite like him though as he usually comes up with a goal or assist in important times? And for me Minamino plays much better with our usual front three rather than with Origi? Also what happens when we lose players for the AFCON? It doesn't hurt to have decent backup to come in and offer something different or new and refreshing to this team when we stagnate and struggle at times? No one's asking for world class backups to replace most of the squad, just those that can come in to improve and rejuvenate a little?

I know this is a long reply and I apologize for that haha but last season I think a lot of people forget certain games we just got over the line? I recall Leicester and Aston Villa as the big ones that spring to mind? At Utd we weren't that good? Sheffield was a 1-0, Wolves were unlucky against us. I don't think it's too greedy to ask for a backup winger and maybe an improvement on Gini and that's it? Anyway I'll leave it there or else this may turn out to be a boom at this rate hahaha.

9.) 15 Sep 2020 17:34:47
Rose tinted glasses lads! We need more quality we’ve too many sick notes that need shipping! We got lucky with our injuries last season and it’s a big ask on the same players again this season! Along with no pressure on our front 3 and cbs We need to keep them Fighting for a place not just turning up and getting one! Just my penny’s worth! We won it well last season won’t be the same this season! Capitalise while we are on top!

10.) 15 Sep 2020 17:36:42
I am neither for the "we don't need anyone" nor the "we need signings " brigades. Because I see both sides and I could probably argue for both. For me it's a highly subjective decision that is best left to the group or the main men at LFC, which brought us back to the top.

Reasoning behind not needing anyone is basically the classic "if it's not broken, why fix it"? And we won by a large margin of points, last season. Within two seasons we went up almost 30 points with essentially the same players against a team (ManC) who also played with essentially the same players.

Reasoning for freshening up the squad is just to look at Man C last year. They had won it for two years with the same core and a third year seemed just too far away for them. Maybe complacency, maybe lack of motivation, maybe lack of hunger. This could hit our players at any time, And look at how Sir WhiskyNose put together that decade plus of success. He was always adding and subtracting players. Always tinkering with a combination of young and established players, regardless of whether they won or finished just behind. Never sitting still. Yo can laugh and scoff because I'm talking about rival teams, but history doesn't lie.

11.) 15 Sep 2020 17:50:25
Well said Robbie. I’m a fan 025, but the shade of Robbie’s glasses look fine to me.

{Ed025's Note - they are blood red burkey with no tint at all, gomez the best english CH in the country...my arse..

12.) 15 Sep 2020 18:55:12
Ed025 hope your well buddy
Can I please ask in your opinion who you feel is the best English centre back around Gomez age.

{Ed025's Note - i think tomori is better myself but of course i will be accused of bias because everton are in for him, the truth is im just not a fan of gomez john, i think VVD carries him (even though he was awful on saturday) and i dont think matip is up to much either mate, its all about opinions though and i know a lot of you rate him so only time will tell..

13.) 15 Sep 2020 19:00:58
Behind Stones?, Big Harry?, Tarkooowski? who exactly is better than him Ed?

{Ed025's Note - i have just answered that with johncrow junior JH, im afraid im not a fan in the slightest mate, tyrone mings with sideburns i would describe him as, but im sure you will all tell me that he is "world class" and a "legend", it would be a boring old world if we all thought the same mate..

14.) 15 Sep 2020 19:14:07
Who is then Ed025?

{Ed025's Note - anyone in his 20,s who is english and does,nt make as many mistakes as michael crawford in "some mothers do av em".. :)

15.) 15 Sep 2020 19:23:31
Time has already told to a certain extent as they have the best defensive record over the last couple of years.

16.) 15 Sep 2020 19:25:08
He was pure class for Liverpool last year. Better than any of the others.

{Ed025's Note - robbie without VVD you would not have won the league last year.. FACT..

17.) 15 Sep 2020 19:30:32
League champions, 2 champions league finals with one winners medal.

One of the best club teams in the world these last 3 years. All achieved with this same manager and group of players of which the vast majority are at peak age.

It’s fair to say other teams have tried to strengthen and the gap between the winner and the rest shouldn’t be as big as last season.

In my opinion, apart from Man City all other prem teams would bite our arm off to swap squads manager and form.
We are the team to beat, we are the champions. I trust in what we have to win it again. It seems some fans criticise regardless of the result or trophies won.

18.) 15 Sep 2020 19:43:33
I thought Gomez defending was very poor for Leeds first goal, had an excellent 2and half, but we do need a partner for VVD or maybe start Matip. Gomez switches off time and again.

19.) 15 Sep 2020 19:45:42
Biggy Balls, you are free to want who you want and that is fine. But as I always ask, where is the money going to come from to sign these players you are saying we should sign?

You are aware that if we could sign players, we would have already signed a few already so if that has not happened, what ia the point of saying who we should sign, knowing full well that we can't. I just see that as an exercise in futility and a waste of time debating fiction. Just my take.

20.) 15 Sep 2020 19:51:40
Robbiesline, firstly you’re right. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Yes we won the league by 7 games, although I’m not sure it would have been by that many had Chelsea not done us a favour. Secondly, regardless of when they won the league, these players are professional, very well paid athletes, and if you play for this club (or any club for that matter), you should always put in 100% every time you play, something you clearly think is not warranted. because ‘we won the league so early’! Also no one is talking about a major overhaul we need a couple of players potentially to not only freshen the side up but also move us forward. In this league, you cannot rest on your laurels for too long. We have the advantages of a settler title-winning squad but sometimes that can also cause complacency when you aren’t challenged for yourrespective position, and this is was is creeping into our game with some of the goals we are conceding. Finally Keita has had plenty of opportunities to establish himself but he hasn’t taken them. He was pulling out of tackles in that game against Leeds, no midfielder with a desire to play for this great club should be doing that. Gini didn’t have the best of games either, and that’s the problem with him, on his day, he is excellent, but those days aren't regular enough. I rate him but sometimes sacrifices have to be made to progress/ advance.

21.) 15 Sep 2020 18:44:22
Question is actually what the heck are you doing here on the Liverpool pages if your glasses are not tinted somewhat?

22.) 15 Sep 2020 20:47:53
I'm not a big fan of Joe Gomez, myself, but by the sounds of it, Ed025 has him as the second best English centre half around.
I'd put a cheeky bid in for Koulibaly.

23.) 15 Sep 2020 22:53:26
You'd hace to be crazy not to think so.

24.) 15 Sep 2020 23:02:02
@Red Meister what is the point of even replying to my comment when you clearly haven’t read my original post. It clearly says that we haven’t got the money so I appreciate we would need to sell first. At least read the posts properly before making yourself look silly.

25.) 15 Sep 2020 18:43:49
Out of curiosity edd 25 who is your choice?

{Ed025's Note - thats a tough one walter, a lot of players can play along side VVD and look good, the problem is that if virgil gets injured would you trust gomez and matip to step up to the plate and be a solid partnership?..i dont think so mate..

26.) 15 Sep 2020 22:53:02
Come on ed025. You don't think we're the best side in the league? We are. We just won the league by 18 points.

{Ed025's Note - you are the best side robbie and by quite a margin i would say, but you cant stand still in this game mate, an injury to a couple of your key players and i think you would be in trouble..

27.) 16 Sep 2020 12:00:51
Biggy_balls, I did read your post and you did say we had no money hence, my question: Why bother saying we need this or that player when we clearly has no money? I don't ask for this or that player cos it does not matter what you or I want, we are broke. Waste of time, IMO but you are free to post your feelings as we all do. I just disagree with it.

30 Aug 2020 11:07:47
All i know is every team seems to have strengthened and we haven’t, and it showed against a very average arsenal side. Our front 3 are missing too many chances regularly and our defence is now leaking goals. Personally if we don’t strengthen, and we lose ANY of our first team players, we aren’t winning the league this season that’s for sure.

1.) 30 Aug 2020 11:25:02
Give me strength
Did we just get 99 points in the league or was I dreaming.

2.) 30 Aug 2020 11:27:53
No pressure on the front 3 they know they are starters wk in wk out even when out of form! Even a bad Salah or mane is better then what’s on the bench!

3.) 30 Aug 2020 11:57:34
Should we hand the Premiership back now and all start panicking?
We lost the Community Shield to City on penalties last season if I recall, and last season didn't turn our too bad.
We must have turned into a crap team overnight.

4.) 30 Aug 2020 12:06:49
All of Arsenals threat came down their left. The side where we were missing Henderson and Trent. Williams was constantly hung out to dry by Wijnaldum on the right side of our midfield, who made no effort to help him out.

Hendo and Trent on the pitch would have given us not only more protection from Aubameyang, but also more creativity in the attacking third. Henderson and Trent got 18 assists last season. Neco and Gini got 1. Our right side got taken apart and offered nothing offensively. Neco is a kid so it's hard to be overly critical of him. Gini though, looked like a player playing his last game though and i expected a more professional performance to be honest.

Mane worked his socks off but missed a couple of absolute sitters because he took an extra touch both times. It happens. He didn't look like a player who wants out though which is good. Closed down everything and got stuck in.

I have been Keita's biggest critic, but it's not an exaggeration to say he and Taki changed the dynamic of the game. We immediately carried more threat which bodes well. After Gomez went to right back, they also didn't really look like scoring.

I thought overall there were more positives than negatives. I'm going to predict we'll see a lot more of Fabinho at centre back in order to accommodate Thiago (if he signs) or Keita in midfield with Henderson. It also looks like we'll see the return of the "Fab 4" approach with Taki left, Mane right, and Bobby playing off Salah (which is exciting) .

Focus turns to Leeds now. The boys looked angry watching Arsenal lift that Shield. Let's hope they carry that into the season.

5.) 30 Aug 2020 12:12:38
There's been no pressure on the front 3 for years and they've done OK, jesus you'd swear we'd won nothing, it's all about Leeds in 2 weeks and they'll be fine.

6.) 30 Aug 2020 12:15:22
U will find this season teams will be a lot stronger and switched on too beat us, we know how good we can be but you can't keep on playing the same front 3 for 4 seasons, predictability and burnout is real!

7.) 30 Aug 2020 12:33:05
And there it is. Panic at the disco. I could not give two flips of the coin about the CS as it is not a thing, IMO. It is as prestigious as the Audi Cup that Bayern host. Win, lose or draw, still don't care.

It was a glorified friendly that seemed to be more important for Arsenal than it was for us judging by how mental their fans are giving it the big'uns on AFTV.

All that matters is that we are ready for Leeds Utd in two weeks, a game that will be a lot tougher than anything Arsenal proposed last night. Focus on that instead of panicking over losing a friendly on penalties.

8.) 30 Aug 2020 13:03:46
Meister it's not losing to arsenal on penalties, its since lockdown we have looked complacent and patchy, I hope this is me being over the top but i think it's coming too the time were things need freshening up . Also we don't know what's going on in the heads of wijnaldum and mane, we haven't been talking of major players leaving since coutinho which didn't at the time hinder us but the league is starting very soon an it would be nice to have settled players with there mind on the job .

9.) 30 Aug 2020 13:08:45
Pre season games mean very little towards an actual season. In years gone by we’ve had excellent pre seasons and disappointing campaigns and also had poor pre seasons and then good seasons. I don’t think there’s an actual formula to it. There’s no denying we aren’t firing on all cylinders and that’s not pre season that’s post lockdown and even before when we were thumped by Watford etc. But again it’s not all doom and gloom as we have so much going for us. The best thing is in 2 weeks time when we play Leeds it’s a brand new clean slate. And that goes for all teams. I really can’t wait for the season to kick off and there’s no doubts we will have our highs and our Lows but that’s the love of being a fan.

10.) 30 Aug 2020 13:19:02
Harveys Man Bun, you nailed it, for sure.

11.) 30 Aug 2020 14:08:29
Hailstones, you may be right if you want to take things back to lockdown BUT lockdown is done now cos it is preseason. Last season is over now. It is a new season now, as JK23 said.

Also, Our boys have been on a mad ting for 3 years now so it is normal for things to drop off a bit. Also, you say since lockdown we have been a bit off. What were you expecting, exactly? That there be no drop off at all after three manic years? Or that other teams and their coaching staff not figuring us out? Come on now, let us be real about it. Sometimes, you won't win all your games or score 5 goals. Let it go, man.

You say you want us to freshen things up. You mean like Minamino and Naby freshened things up last night for example? Mane played very well yesterday so his head is fine. Can't say the same for Gini. I don't care cos that is stuff you cannot control. It is preseason, man. Klopp knows what the issue is cos if you can see it then you know he can. Trust the process is all I am saying cos we got little money to spend so calling for signings is a futile at this point.

28 Aug 2020 05:51:12
Isn’t koeman only at Barcelona for one season anyway? Why would mane want to reunite with him for a season? Plus Barcelona aren’t going anywhere fast. the club is in turmoil, their best player wants to leave, they are wanting to sell a boat load of players, they won’t be winning anything for a while.

19 Aug 2020 09:29:02
HMB, you say we already have a 1st choice attack of mane, firmino and salah, a second choice attack of Origi, Minamino and chamberlain, and a third choice attack of Jones, Brewster and Harvey-Elliott. No disrespect to the players But from that, the dip in quality between each choice is huge.

1.) 19 Aug 2020 10:00:04
I dunno, the second trio have all scored champions league goals, the third trio are u20s two of them have scored against pl opposition (brewster being a penalty, but he also scored against elite level teams in pre season)

And its not like all 3 of our forwards are out and the next 3 come in. I read the first part of the post and was thinking "how can people think we need a striker"

2.) 19 Aug 2020 10:03:42
yea but that's who we have. so it's either sell those guys and bring someone else in new. I'm all for backing our own unless we need to move someone on.

3.) 19 Aug 2020 10:26:20
Have a look at the goal return from the potential replacements we're linked with. Cantwell, Traore, Sarr, Barnes etc all only got 6 goals despite being regulars.

Origi scored 6 goals last season despite starting very few games. Sure, he is a long way behind Mane. I agree. But he is also a long way ahead of many of the alternatives.

Chamberlain was our 4th top scorer with 8 goals. That's more than all of the above.

I think maybe people are giving up on Minamino a bit too soon as well. He can play across the entire front 3 and once he settles in, there is a lot of potential there. Fabinho, Robertson and Ox all needed 6 months as well remember.

Brewster, Jones and Elliott are just a bonus to be honest. We already have 7 senior players (if you include Shaqiri who hasn't even left yet and is talking like he wants to stay) who Klopp trusts in our front 3. Shaqiri scored 6 goals in his injury free first season.

These guys are not bad players just because our first choice trio are world class and very rarely injured. It's hard to score goals when you are mostly playing off the bench or when you are only starting once a month.

4.) 19 Aug 2020 10:28:19
We had less than that when we won the premier league and champions league so it'll do just fine for me.

5.) 19 Aug 2020 11:34:03
I know Harvey. Mino has only played a handful of times. Has he evdn played a full 90 yet? Talk about writing a player off too soon.

6.) 19 Aug 2020 11:52:10
I agree Robbie. Minamino tore us apart in the Champions league. I'm excited to see him develop this coming season.

Just on Origi though, he got 6 goals and 4 assists last season. That's in just 9 starts, or 1420 minutes which means he averages a direct goal involvement every 142 minutes. It's hard to find players who can better that kind of return with regular game time! Origi is a bit of a specialist when it comes to coming into the team for short and inconsistent periods. Replacing Origi will either cost a fortune, or we have to put faith in the likes of Brewster and Jones.

7.) 19 Aug 2020 12:22:23
Ox is far better in midfield, can score from midfield and looks more comfortable there.

If Origi wants to move on and we get an acceptable offer then we definitely could do with an upgrade in quality for a backup/ rotation winger (Origi is more of a striker but Salah and Mane could play there too so an out and out winger would make more sense) .

That's if Origi wants to go (more minutes elsewhere of course) . If he doesn't then we go again as we are, maybe less Shaqiri as he barely played anyway and I wouldn't say we need to sign someone if he goes.

8.) 19 Aug 2020 14:25:49
Sean, it's debatable where Ox plays best but either way he played nearly 20 times last season on the left and right wing. Klopp clearly trusts him there and Ox seems like the kind of guy who will play wherever he is asked to play. He's definitely considered as an option in the front 3. I personally like him in all the roles he covers. CM/ CAM, LM/ LW and RM/ RW.

He's one of my favourite players and i hope he can get even better now he's had a solid run of fitness. He's lost a lot of excess muscle that he was carrying when he signed and looks in prime condition that you expect from an athlete.

9.) 19 Aug 2020 17:54:46
@harveys man bun, ya I agree he has played a lot there so maybe that is due to Klopp trusting him on the wings. It might also be as Klopp may not be fully happy with his wing options though and saw Ox as the best available.

I also like Ox, not as much as you but I would rate him 6.5 or 7 out of 10 on the wing. Centre mid I see him more as an 8.5 out of 10 though, much prefer him there.

10.) 19 Aug 2020 18:49:25
OP, so what do you propose we do with the so called "second" and "third" choice attacking tridents? Sell them all to accommodate "insert quality players here" who will gladly accept their roles from the bench?

29 Nov 2014 12:14:23
Oh dear, sounds like we are going to play the same team as we did against ludogorets :/

1.) Would be happy to see Lucas play. We have missed his energy and skill

If I could get rid of Keita now, I would gladly do it. He offered nothing in the game against chelsea or in fact any other games he has played in for us. I think he has had enough chances to show his ability. If we needed to sell someone now, he’s be first on the list to go!

Joe Gomez is a great player but nearly as injury prone as Joel matip!

Sell with with a buy back clause is a win-win if you ask me.

I hope so. sturridge is a quality player but clearly he is made of glass because his injury record quite frankly is appalling

I actually thought grujic looked good. He did sometimes slow the game down but overall, he was impressive. very calm and assured on the ball.

@Red Meister what is the point of even replying to my comment when you clearly haven’t read my original post. It clearly says that we haven’t got the money so I appreciate we would need to sell first. At least read the posts properly before making yourself look silly.

We played a high line and they punished us for it. So whilst Gomez allows us to play a high line, it means one long ball could cause us real issues and it did. Leeds had done their work home and scored 3 against us, just imagine what it’s going be like when we play City or Chelsea!

Every team has has the same weird preseason. So far, arsenal won 3-0 and looked good going forwards. Crystal Palace are winning against Southampton 1-0. We on the other hand are making loads of mistakes and are winning 3-2 coming in at half time, but it could be anyone’s game. If we draw or lose, you can’t use having a weird preseason as an excuse and every other club has had the same.
