Been told by someone who works within the club that Shaqiri is coming and Klopp is going to stick with Karius as number 1 contrary to reports. Hardly over the moon with either really but the same source did seem to think Gotze was nailed on a couple of seasons back so I hope things change again.

Let's see what happens. Shaqiri just doesn't seem like a klopp player.
Karius deserves some slack from our fans either way. YNWA should apply for karius too.

If that’s true I think Shaqiri will eventually take Karius’s place 🤝.

That's an upgrade Ron.

Ed001 is 100% spot friggin on regarding Shaqiri. There is talent in the academy that should get a look before making a signing like this. I think it’s a waste of money. Not necessarily because I don’t think he is any good, but if we are just making signings for cover as some suggest what is the point of having an academy? If we do sign Shaqiri I will support him and hope that he does well but give the youngsters a proper chance.

stone - this is nothing new with Shaqiri or even with Klopp. It’s the modern day game which demands quick, regular success.

If Klopp had won something then maybe he could take a risk with a youngster, but he’s under pressure to deliver this season and everyone moaned about how weak our bench was in the CL final.

Agree9 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - and it has improved by buying 2 first team players so that those that were in the first team will now be on the bench. Why waste money on players no one believes are good enough to make the first team stronger and are merely just there for 'cover'?}

05 Jul 2018 12:26:42
Ed01,
Agreed totally.
However, every time there was a rumour that we are buying first 11 material, the default response from an ed is either “unless Salah is leaving” or “if Mane were to leave”.

Agree10 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - no it isn't. Did anyone say anything of the kind when Fekir was close? You are mixing up your own ridiculous expectations with the truth. Some players would only be signed if Salah or Mane were to leave. Some would be bought to improve the team as it is.}

05 Jul 2018 12:45:47
Ey ed if klopp can screw shaqiri head on and he can make an impact in say 10/ 12, where we can also give Salah a rest then for the reported 12 million it's a bargain.

If however he just flops and we want to sell, were not going to lose anything major, as I've said before someone like West ham would probably pay 20/ 25 mil next year. Even he has just a handful of good games.

Got people saying why didn't they sign him now, well liverpool want him and there hardly going to compete with klopp or champions league now are they.

Agree3 Disagree5

{Ed001's Note - if West Ham would pay that much, why don't they just sign him for 12 now? You are making no sense.}

05 Jul 2018 13:06:39
''Why waste money on players no one believes are good enough to make the first team stronger. ''

Because if they replace mane, he ain't going to sit on the bench. We don't have a world class midfield and they can be subs. we have world class attack that won't be subs. solanke ings Sturridge don't fit the mould and ain't good enough.

So improve your bench. Man city have an unbelievable bench. klopp is trying to address the issue.

Agree6 Disagree3

{Ed001's Note - Man City built the bench by buying first team players, not players for the bench.}

05 Jul 2018 13:44:56
I get your point ron but if we are buying for “cover” that is partly what the academy is for. To buy a player to simply cover is a waste of money in my view. How many times have we read on here from so many asking why the youngsters aren’t given a chance? I hope they get a legitimate chance during the pre-season. Just my opinion.

Remember on the 25th of May when nearly everyone was saying how good Karius had been and that they'd be happy for him to be first choice next season? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Ed I answered you question in my post.

They probably do want to sign him now but he's probably going to choose us for the champions league and were liverpool.

If however he doesn't work out I'm sure they would still be interested and the going rate for a good rw like him is about 20/ 25 million. Plus if he has a few good games but wants more game time than we can offer then maybe we sell him as a prize asset for like 30 mil.

Agree1 Disagree2

{Ed001's Note - you haven't answered my question, you are just making guesses.}

05 Jul 2018 14:31:47
Totally on board with ed here. I would much prefer we either buy someone that would put our first teamers on the bench or give Harry Wilson the cover job than Shaqiri be brought in. But if he bought he will have my support. There is a player in there somewhere, and if anyone can get it out of him it’s Klopp.

Poor guy I feel sorry for Karius. He was doing well up until the final and had shocker yes but that can happen to anyone. Look at De Gea for Spain (yet everyone still classed him as one of the worlds best.

I do think we should upgrade don’t get me wrong but if we can’t get the guy we want, we wait until we can. Karius is still a decent keeper and I think with our midfield improved significantly he should be called up less

I just hope to god he doesn’t read this site. What happened to YNWA? Embarrassed to be a Liverpool fan at times.

Makes sense to spend 200m on neymar and put mane on bench. and when he leaves spend 300m on mbappe and put neymar on bench. or fingers crossed we have unearthed an entire squad of WC subs. as shown on many an fa/ efl cup game.

Does any of our opinions or the Eds opinions matter, if Klopp wants him then he sees something, isn't that all there is to it. Klopp doesn't care if you think he's lazy or someone else thinks he has a bad attitude or if Ed thinks there's better in the academy or elsewhere, it's the managers choice. I'm all for opinion but don't be absolutely hammering a player because he's being linked with us. Mane had issues pre_Liverpool, Keita has had his fair share too, let's see what happens and who knows, he might win golden boot out of nowhere next season.

Considering the other options bandied about it for goalkeeper I’d far rather stick with Karius and make Ward number 2, sell Mignolet and bring in an experience third choice. Besides which, Karius is a young lad and will learn from that night in Kiev.

Who is putting mane, Salah or b9bby on the bench? Answer me that.

Second ed. There isn't a single premier league team who want shaqiri? Who have struggled offering what we can?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - he has been touted around everyone, that is all I know.}

05 Jul 2018 16:50:07
Far enough ed. I wasn't arguing with you but I just don't think there is much to stress out with this transfer. We will make pleanty and release loads of wages once the likes of sturdier have been offloaded.

Secondly no matter how good you are you always need something off the bench and signing smartly isn't always the worst idea. I personally think fergie would of signed him, lime he did solskajer, chicharito, Larson etc. He knew having some good back up on the bench was a smart move but there isn't always better than what you have out there. Which in this case unless it was Messi or Ronaldo I think our front 3 are irreplaceable. Maybe apart from mane but only slightly.

Agree3 Disagree1

{Ed001's Note - none of those players were bought for the bench, they were all seen as players with the potential to be first choice. Fergie was never afraid to leave a gap in the squad for youth players.}

05 Jul 2018 17:09:03
Isn't it constantly mentioned that it is a squad game now, we are not signing him for the bench we are signing him for the squad. We need squad players who are good enough to play premier league games when we are resting the likes of Salah for CL games. Yes we need spaces for kids to get game time and develop but we also need experience to be able to stand a chance in those games.

Agree3 Disagree2

05 Jul 2018 17:19:42
and I think shaqiri is more than good enough for the bench but has the talent that if klopp can screw his bloody head on and he thrives in our attacking play could become a first team player.

I just think your way out with this one. He is a good player. Solid. If klopp makes it click. Well he might just supirse a lot of us.

Like Henderson, Chamberlain, Salah, mane, Robertson, Trent, Loren, Milner. So much negativity surrounded all of those players. Deemed wastes of money or not good enough for liverpool. They where all first team starters in the cl campaign and resulting final last year.

Yes we can't label every llayer we sign with klopps magic wand but we can't just discount how good he has proven to be with players who where deemed not good enough!

its all a moot point if the karius rumour is true. we won't win anything unless we buy a quality keeper.

Agree8 Disagree7

05 Jul 2018 19:31:12
StevieJesus we’re not gong to get Oblak and there really isn’t much point shopping in the reject pile for the likes of Navas or Cillessen as they’re not quality at all. So we should give Karius our support.

The underlying assumption to this raging debate seems to be that we are buying Shaquiri for "cover".

What is the basis for this assumption?

Agree1 Disagree1

06 Jul 2018 07:44:23
That he's not good enough to displace any of our current front 3. Not many are, to be fair.

Defo strongly agree with Ed about buying players for the first 11 and therefore strengthening the bench with proven first 11 players from last years. Despite being unlucky with injuries at the end of last season we lacked 2-3 players who can come on and make an impact.

Dybala for me would fit the profile and is an excellent player. More mobile than Fekir and I believe fits better with the now dynamic midfield we have to match our front 3. The system can be tweaked for different games giving
Us a plan B and allowing us to compete in all comps.

Still think we need a keeper but in Klopp I trust.

"Man City built the bench by buying first team players, not players for the bench."
And the same with Fergie's United. The way to build a strong squad is buying players who can be starters and take someone's place, then it's up to the player who gets dropped to the bench to improve and fight for the place back.

Buying backup players gets you nowhere, just look at Chelsea last season for the perfect example. Deserved champions one season and a big league flop the next. They signed Morata, Bakayoko, Drinkwater, Rudiger, Zappacosta, Emerson, Caballero, Giroud and even Ross flippin Barkley for a total of almost a quarter of a billion pounds and NONE of them improved the first team.

So yes it would be VERY difficult to improve on our starting forwards, so I'd prefer if we go for a younger player on lower wages who9 can play on but wings and has more potential to learn and improve, like Moses Simon for example.
