This Ben Davies deal could end up being a very smart bit of business I think. ALso indicates we have a big money move for a CB lined up for the summer as Davies will probably be a backup only. VVD, Gomez, Davies and a top quality first choice CB signing (Konate/ Diego Carlos) is good enough for me.

What's the point of keeping Matip though? He is brilliant when fit, but his injury problems are as bad as Keita's. There is no stability at the back when we keep chopping and changing our CBs time and again. It just makes sense to get someone with a better fitness record and build from there.

Aah ok. Poor choice of words from my end. My OP was more to do with what I would like to see happen in the summer.
The only way we should be keeping Matip is if he accepts a pay as you play deal. If not, might be very difficult to find a buyer anyways.

{Ed001's Note - if we can replace him, then I would defo offload him. It wouldn't matter if he was better than Beckenbauer and Maldini combined, his fitness issues make him a liability. The only reason to keep him is if they can be solved, which seems unlikely as they have been getting worse.}

I think this is a cracking bit of business if true.

He seems very highly thought of and is likely to replace matip long term who can’t be trusted with his injury record.

From what I have heard he seems pacy and can play out from the back but I think ed001 said his weakness his aerially. Which long term can be developed, in our situation we were never getting the perfect cb for peanuts.

But at 2m for a 25 year old he has resale value if it doesn’t work, and if it does our likely 4th choice hasn’t massively damaged the coffers. Plus I presume he’s home grown which is a bonus.

The club have a fairly good track record and I have no reason to doubt them on this. Rival fans will no doubt mock but the proof will be in the pudding. If we can get one of Hendo or fab in midfield it can only be a positive imo. Plus ed047 will have to try flog mustafi to someone else 😂.

Rob Jones was signed from Crewe and pocketed Ryan Giggs on his debut, he was pretty good. A better shout than Mustafi if you ask me.

I never seen him play so I will trust the club not got to many wrong over the last 3/ 4 years. Have any of the Ed’s got any idea how good he is I would love him to gave abut of pace.

{Ed001's Note - he is very well thought of, except he is seen as being too weak in the air to be top class. Not sure that is really all that much of an issue if we have Phillips alongside him and Fabinho front screening. I would certainly prefer him to options such as Mustafi.}

Didn't Klopp sign Hummels and Subotic for 4m each when he was at Dortmund? I know, was a different time but don't judge a player before he's played for the club or based on price. Keep faith in Klopp and his judgement.

Thanks ed001 yeah am not to bothered about his Aerial ability, much prefer him to have pace so we can get back to defending a high line with Fabinho and Henderson back in the midfield. Henderson to the greatest in the air but he has done ok at the back, even the goal West Ham got today was only because Robertson got a little flick on. And today I thought Nat Phillips was really good that defensive header in the first half was great defending and he looked good on the ball no VVD but who is.

I've heard nothing but genuine praise for a well like and decent centreback. I don't care where he's from, if he's got what it takes, then best of luck to Ben Davies, and welcome to LFC.
He sounds as though he is excellent at antipaction, and is a hard tackler. He may be another Robbo, who knows, and a great partner for Phillips who is beginning to claim one spot at the back.

I see 1 of Henderson or Fabinho partnering either Phillips or Davies, allowing the other to move into midfield

But it doesn’t excuse the fact he has not been up standard for as long as I can remember. He should be sold this summer to raise much needed funds.
