Liverpool have been told the price they must pay for Thiago is €35m

They have agreed.

{Ed025's Note - hmmmm..

27 Jul 2020 13:50:37
Seems odd that the team. That has the player with less than a year left on his contract. And have publicly stated he won't sign new deal, and wants a new challenge. Hold all the cards?! Seems odd.

Grujic gone.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 14:18:45
Even if Grujic gone this one makes little sense to me. Who's place in the first 11 does Thiago take? If they are all fit Hendo, Fab { Wij | Keita | Jones | Milner | Thiago }.

Seems like a lot of midfielders and one in there the club already spent 60mill on in Keita.

The move would make more sense if Wijnaldum was the player leaving.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 15:24:16
It’s a squad game premier league champions league fa cup league cup however it doesn’t fit the usual criteria for a Liverpool signing 29 year old in a well subscribed position. I always thought there was talk of Trent playing cm with williams looking like a great understudy I thought this would be the season for a few outings. Left back cb cf is areas liverpool need reinforcements not cm. and I hate it when gini is underrated consistent hard working a perfect professional. Plays all the big games why would he be going?

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 16:31:21
I can't see Liverpool paying that much money for a 29 year old especially if funds are tight. I would be look for bargain signing that Klopp can working like he did with Andy Robertson. The midfielder at Norwich could be a bargain and I ain't talking about Cantwell but if a big star was to leave then a big money replacement maybe brought in.

Agree3 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 16:46:44
I can’t see Thiago signing unless Gini leaves. I’m certainly not wishing Gini does leave but he hasn’t signed a new contract which might be the reason they are looking to replace him. I think signing Thiago would take the sting out of Wijnaldum leaving.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 17:10:26
Why do players have to leave for us to sign players to improve the team? 60 games In a season, injuries to players etc. We need players to keep the competition up and stop players thinking they are guaranteed a starting place and lacking the top level of motivation. Quite clearly if we perform less than 100% we can lose games so even more important to freshen up the team if we can so Klopp has options. Even the captain and player of the year knows if his form drops off, he will be replaced. He’s humble enough to see the bigger picture and I’m sure Gini is also.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - its a financial thing war machine...liverpool dont have much money to spend mate..

27 Jul 2020 17:23:54
I really don’t see Klopp getting rid of Wijnaldum.

Agree7 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 18:31:56
If he doesn't sign a contract then he may not have a choice.

Agree4 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 18:35:39
It's not really the same as getting rid, if Gini just doesn't want to sign a new contract.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 19:52:18
I'm really struggling to rationalise this move. All I could come up with is the club have said ok, huge financial uncertainty, we can't blow the bank on a young, already good but high ceiling player such as Werner - I realise they play different positions - so let's bring in a proven winner to keep the team ticking over and competitive until the financial landscape becomes clearer next season. Even this seems a bit of a reach.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 20:36:33
Everyone seems to be reacting to this like it's solid news. It isn't, it's a rumour. Repeatedly recycled.
Until he's pictured doing the Melwood lean it will remain a rumour.

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - It comes from the Dat Kid From Bolton when he confirmed the agreement weeks ago. Just after Liverpool reached agreement to take Sancho from Dortmund next summer.}

27 Jul 2020 22:45:37
Seen a snippet from an interview with Lijnders where he talks about ‘unpredictability to solve problems’ next season.
Whether this manifests itself in unexpected signings and / or tactical changes, formations etc we will see.
But it seems clear that things will change to some degree.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 00:39:01
I'm almost certain Ljinders gave examples of variation in build up play when he was talking about that, using Fabinho to chip passes into diagonal runs and such.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 04:46:57
Yeah, and look at Thiago's chipped passes. He is one of the best passers in the game.

Agree2 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 06:40:48
Thiago is a quality player. Liverpool need a deeper experienced squad. I’d be happy with him joining. Playing time is up to the players effort, approach, quality, etc. He’d be one of a number but another quality one if he were to be signed!

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 08:57:03
Rather resign coutinho. It makes no sense at all. Resign coutinho he knows the league can do whatever thiago can and do a lot more.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 11:45:00
Why do we need to sell to buy? Well, in midfield we have 7 players there already for 3 positions with no indication any one of those 7 are leaving

Look at his chipped passes - I think this is one of our massive strengths already. If we are adding variety I would have thought a midfielder who can knit together our attacks a la David Silva would be the type we're after.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 12:03:32
I wonder if Milner will leave for Leeds, freeing up another space. His wages must be sky high.
Thiago is more than just chipped passes too. His all round passing game is a step above any MF that we have already.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Jul 2020 09:55:46
I’d rather give Jones, Elliot or even Harry Wilson a crack. All have shown they have great potential so if even one of them become a reliable squad player we’v saved millions.

Good Luck Dejan. I feel you tried your hardest for our club and you did receive criticism from some fans but you also gave us special memories such as your last minute goal vs Dortmund.

YNWA.

Agree2 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 18:04:50
Dejan may have had a few wobbly moments here and there, but he also had some exceptional performances to make up for it. He will forever be rememebered for his performance against Dortmund.

Best of luck to him and his family in Russia. I hope it brings him lots of success.

Red Sandman.

Agree2 Disagree0

{Ed025's Note - i do wish the guy all the best RS, but you cant live your playing career on the back of a flukey goal against dortmund mate...come on!..

27 Jul 2020 20:35:08
Lovren may have made mistakes, but others have made the same or more. Maguire has made mistakes but people seem to want to convince themselves that he is something special. Because of his transfer fee? Because he is English?
There seems to be a dearth of talent at centre back right now. Lovren did well for us in more games than one.
Good luck to him.

Maguire is a pylon.

I won’t lie I’m glad Lovren has left. Loved his effort and passion and he leaves us a champion at the end of the day. But let’s face it, he was always a weak link in the defence.

Seen German outlets like the Bild linking lfc with the CB at Schalke Kabak. Is there truth to this Ed's?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - I don't know - I will try and find out later. Obviously not first choice for Klopp.}

27 Jul 2020 11:10:09
I actually typed his name and i can see you responded two years ago about him on this page. You mention he is a good CB and host of clubs were interested the likes of man city and united.
I know Diego Carlos was first priority, I wonder if he is the clubs second alternative due to C.V.?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - I think Llorente would be second choice as I say. Never being HG is a big deal as the rules will tighten. That is why clubs will continue to look at the likes of Ben White, Dael Fry and Ben Godfrey. If Liverpool simply want to replace Lovren then Nat Phillips should be considered - he is well thought of in Germany.}

27 Jul 2020 11:31:24
I’d like to see Phillips given a chance to impress in training at least, we don’t know how long we may struggle for income and as a 4th choice player who would cost us nothing would be great.

Our annual wage bill is HUGE, and if we can lose some of the higher earners who don’t play as much with young talent internally that would be a big bonus.

Agree3 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 11:36:59
Does being English on its own count as being homegrown? For example, Jonathan Panzo; a young, English, LB and CB, really well thought of but playing in Belgium this year on loan from Monaco. I believe he came through at Chelsea so would he count as homegrown?

He's spent a few of his developing years outside of the country. This is just an example, I know you've not mentioned him. Although if we've been looking at those three then I think we could've and probably should've looked at Panzo.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Nationality is not relevant, the player needs to spend three years bwteen 16 and 21 playing for clubs in the same Football Association - so England and Wales. Panzo could yet become Home Grown in England if he moved back this summer, or even next. But there is no intention to do that and he was at Monaco's feeder club to gain experienced and returned to Monaco with the othe half dozen players they had on loan there. Liverpool has shown no interest.}

27 Jul 2020 12:14:54
Thanks Ed. Interesting and with some top talent deciding to uproot and get game time in other countries at the start of their careers now this could force clubs to start listening to their demands, especially the big clubs who want to fill their homegrown quota with the best of the homegrown talent.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Right, and keep in mid that it more a case of when not if the quota will change in the PL.}

27 Jul 2020 12:08:16
I see this Kabak kid recieved the "rookie of the year"prize in his 1st season in Germany beating Sancho among others to it. must be very highly rated.

Agree3 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 12:32:46
Good to know that Nat Phillips is getting good reviews in Germany. It will only enhance his stock with the coaching staff should we not sign a CB and just fast-track him into the first team.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 12:28:17
So ed just hypothetically, if we loaned out Elliot for 3 years now until he’s 21 aboard - is he no longer considered home grown? Or as the parent club, does it still count?

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - He would not be registered with Liverpool so it doesn't count.}

27 Jul 2020 13:20:25
ed002 I can't see how Nat Phillips could be any worse than Lovren at 31 still seems to make the same mistakes every time he plays. what a dream pair Lovren and Luiz would be.

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Jul 2020 13:26:39
ed002 if his loans are in England would he be ok.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Yes.}

Thoughts on sepp van de berg Or hoever stepping up as cover with matip and gomez playing with VVD?

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 00:43:42
The Fat Kid says we're close to agreeing a deal. So that obviously means that we're not interested in reality.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Jul 2020 01:25:46
sepp van de berg looks shaky to say the least, therefore I personally haven’t been impressed so far. Hoever to me looks like he could be class but maybe needs a bit more time or even a loan to help him kick on. I like the way he can play RB as well, he looks like he could be a real gem.

Morning Ed's and Reds. We've been linked with a move for Schalke's CB Ozan Kabak. Ed2, do you see him as being a realistic signing or would he cost too much?

Many thanks.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Ozan Kabak (CB) has been of past interest to both Manchester sides, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich but the asking price has always been see as high, although it seems to have dropped to something between €35M and €40M now. The interest of the Manchester sides when he left Galatasaray or Stuttgart and he hit an age where he could never qualify as Home Grown in England - and that is something Liverpool should concern themselves with as well. I am not so sure he is the starter Liverpool have been looking for but he will be cheaper than both Llorente and Diego Carlos.

27 Jul 2020 11:50:56
Cheers Ed002. He's also considerably younger with only turning 20! So has plenty time to grow and improve under Klopp per say. Diego Carlos as you say is no1 choice. Is obviously more expensive and 7 years older. But could potentially come straight in to the starting 11. Be interesting which path if any they choose to go down. The times I've watched Kabak. He's been very impressive, and you tend to forget he was a teenager playing in the bundesliga. Which is a good sign!

27 Jul 2020 06:38:30
Ed002 do we have any interest in the CB Kabak From Schalke please?

Ed02 any chance we may target ismaila sarr now as Watford got the drop? can it work? as a winger for us 🤔🤔🤔.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

{Ed002's Note - Ismaila Sarr (RW) has had a disrupted season after moving from Rennes and might become available with Watford being relegated. He would make a good replacement for Shaqiri but (a) would Sarr want to limit his playing time to that which Shaqiri gets, (b) he is not Home Grown, (c) he would block Harvey Elliott's progression, and (d) like the last few players asked about, would depart for AFCON when it happens as he is Senegalese.}

27 Jul 2020 11:55:14
Sorry if this has been done, but why has Shaq not got regular game time? I've heard it's his attitude, and that's been an issue that's followed him his whole career, with Stoke team mates (apparently? ) particularly fed up when they got the drop.

When he's been on the pitch, he's looked good.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - He is not first choice, has had the nappy rash issue and a couple of other injuries.}
