A lot of people on here are saying that Man City won't sellto their rivals. . but im sure that when the sheik looks at the table he will agree that we are no rivals to City at present which may allow us to sign A. Johnson and Ade. What do you reckon ed? {ed's note - I still think he will see Liverpool as a threat myself.}

they may not see us as a threat at this moment in time but if they was to sell us them, then they will soon see as threats, , there not gunna wanna help us get back up to top 4 lol

What I'm saying is were not linked with any world class players unlike all the other top clubs. You then mentioned meireles and I implied he was not a great player due to his performances. As for gerrard, Torres and reina they are not having the best of seasons but given the crap they are playing with it's probably understandable. {ed's note - you also said that journos would know who we are after, I just pointed out that they don't have a clue who we are after. You suddenly tried to twist this into a debate on Meireles's abilities, which are impossible to judge as he has played out of position regularly, in a new country and team and is just settling in.}
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Ok were getting nowhere here. If you seriously think meireles is a world class signing then we'll end it now. My point was simply the lack of real top draw signings but I can argue with you all night if you want. {ed's note - no, your point was that we are not being linked with any. So you have decided that we are not being linked with players you want so it must be a disaster for the club. But we are being linked with some top players and a bunch of dross too, it just depends on which reports you read. No point even taking notice of them, journos know less than most supporters, they just make guesses about players to link us with. Just wait and see what happens over the next couple of windows, then you can either whine about more dross joining or be happy we are moving in the right direction. But judging it on paper talk is not a fair way to judge.}

Do you class meireles as a good signing then? If you do your easily pleased. Look at our points and league position since we signed him for gods sake. {ed's note - he is one player, perhaps you think our league position means that Pepe Reina, Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard are rubbish as well? After all they are all in the same team.}

Ed have you heard any recent news on honda?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
okay , thanks anyway ed , just wondering if your opinion is the same as mine really , as in how likely is it that he will be a liverpool player by the end of january? As im starting to think that its gona be the same as the turan rumours ( big build up + nothing happen)

LFCmatty {ed's note - the rumours were mostly based on him angling for the move, the same as the Turan rumours, so I agree with you, unfortunately. I would love us to sign him, but I am not hopeful.}
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
So you think we won't get him?

LFCmatty {ed's note - it is difficult to tell, all the reports and rumours are originating from abroad, I have no way of verifying anything they say or of knowing if the authors are reliable or not.}

(3) (2)

It was only a short time ago Ed that you were so so sure of honda signing. Fact is your source is like everyone elses, straight from the grocery store.
Ozdave {ed's note - I was hopeful, never sure. I have never once said anything other than he fits the profile and would be an excellent signing. The archives are there if you would like to look through them...}

Ferryhill Red. {ed's note - like when they all told us that Meireles was joining?}

I completely agree with Ed, none of us have any idea who we'll sign come january, but as much as it is annoying for us fans i for one am glad as it prevents the likes of Spurs jumping in on our deals. I have got a feeling that things will come good in january.

Has anyone noticed that we are not linked with any big signings in any of the press but all the other big clubs are? I think this tells a story that we are now on par with randy Lerner at Aston villa and can only expect third rate rubbish coming into our club. Oh and by the way I'm not being naive thinking anfield is in shutdown and not letting any rumours out, just realistic. It is the football reporters jobs to sniff out who's going where and I think the silence at our club is deafening.

Poulson could be on the verge of a loan move to Fulham. Roy thinks that he can cut it at this level, but thinks he needs 1st team football with an EPL club. Which at the moment he isn't going to get.

in reply
just give him to fulham and get the useless waste of space off the wages bill, the money we save over time will make up for the loss!

Rafa in Liverpool over the Italian winter break. He may be checking on his house or he may be catching up with old friends. . . . . . .or just maybe he's going to be hanging out at Anfield. For a few years.
Either way, 6m settlement from LFC and 8m from Inter (within 6 months), you can't argue with his business skills. Problem is he's likely to spend the lot on lemons. Again.

One thing I will say is I think the big money move will come in late like robiniho did and shock people best way for abit lift and push for the end of a season no signings will be tight that's not how things work it's a Market place the more bids higher the price if you have something to sell you want the world to know

Man City readying a £20m plus Adebayor, A.Johnson, SWP and Micah Richards bid for Fernando Torres.

if this is true if i'm honest i would bite there hands off! adebayor and johnson and the 20 million would be good enough, SWP and richards would be ok squad members and b4 u start im a season ticket holder who is fed up with watching uninterested players and pay cheque chasers pullin on the red shirt
bel if you would take it
unbel if you wouldnt

Ed I would agree with the Commoli comments. U watched him on LFC.tv and he could not even explain his role at the club. He seemed confused by every question.

{ed's note - I have not been impressed by him the few times I have seen him. I would not think he was a target, I don't think Comolli's remit is to find any decent French players. To be honest I am worried about Comolli, I don't know if I am sure his appointment was a good move or not, the more I look into him the less I like!}

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Can you elaborate on your concerns Ed. The jury's out for me on Commolli, although I have nothing material to substantiate my thoughts. Its just a sub-concious doubt given that he's been through North London in a relatively short space of time. {ed's note - he is not held in high regard in France, from what I kind find out. One of the other editors has good connections in France and he has expressed a few concerns about him to me as well. It seems like a lot of the signings he is given credit for were not due to him.}

This is your problem Olivier, you seem to think it is an issue that would result in an arrest or is about a player misbehaving.
It is not about anything like that: it is about a subject that could concern every football supporter in one way or the other.
I respect the editor and his decision.
But you make a fundamental error in your post.
You state, "But, this is a place to discuss football matters (on the pitch)."
The majority of issues on this excellent site are NOT about matters on the pitch. They are about money, managers, new owners and stadiums.
If, as you could argue, they all relate to 'matters on the pitch, ' then so is my topic. Again, since the editor has made a decision, you will never know.
One tip - not everything the media does is to out people, hammer reputations or catch people doing things wrong. It seems your mind is in that sphere . . maybe you would make a good reporter for The S*n?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

All right, you win. I would make a good reporter for the paper you mentioned. Very clever, associate me with a rag everyone else hates to win an argument. You are truly clever! Meanwhile, you are the one who started this whole thing about this news that should interest EVERY football fan. The editor seems to disagree. I don't care about your rumour unless it has to do with a new manager, player or anything that directly affects the product on the pitch. And, between the two of us who works in the media (who do you work for? the Daily Bugle? is that why you have the secret identity). If you think you know where my mind is then take your 'topic' there with you along with your pseudo. I still wish you happy holidays.

P.S. Can I use that S*n line? It was so clever!

Just read a rumour that Sanchez could be available for about 17 million, Inter are maybe interested and could have already started talks, would he come to us ED? {ed's note - I am sure I read quotes, in the summer, that he wanted to play in the EPL. If United continue to make no move for him we would have every chance of getting him.}

"Didn't Carra refuse right back at the Riverside when we lost 2 0 the year they went down? Double standards?"

Completely different. Mascherano completely refused to play for the team that plucked him from obscurity in West Ham reserves, risked getting caught up in a tug-of-war between shady South-American football agents and made him the captain of the Argentinian football team as well as being regarded as one of the best DMs in the world. We helped him when he needed it, but he abandoned us when we needed his.
If ever returns to Anfield (which looks unlikely) he should be kicked off the park by the players and booed every time he gets the ball.

Got this ofLiverpool are being linked with a shock move for former striker Peter Crouch.

The 29-year-old left the Reds for Portsmouth for a reported fee of £11 million in 2008 after three eventful years at Anfield.

But now it appears Liverpool are considering bringing the Spurs star back to Merseyside as they search desperately for striking reinforcements.

It had initially been reported by the Daily Star that Liverpool were keeping tabs on the England international and now, according to caughtoffside.com, Spurs would be willing to entertain offers of £10-12 million for the ex-Southampton forward.

Crouch is just one of several names to have been linked with a January move to Liverpool as Roy Hodgson steps up his pursuit of a new strike partner for Anfield star Fernando Torres.

The Liverpool boss has frequently admitted his intention to bring more potent attacking options to Anfield when the transfer window opens in order to ease the burden on Torres and Reds captain Steven Gerrard.

Liverpool have also been linked with moves for Bayern Munich hotshot Mario Gomez and Bolton ace Johan Elmander as new Reds owners NESV look to back their manager in the transfer market.

Hodgson will reportedly have upwards of £20 million to spend next month on new recruits as he and NESV aim to transform fortunes at Liverpool.

f the pfa website hope it's cr*p,

Love the site ed, completely agree about how tight information now seems to be on prospective signings. So just to clarify where all did these Honda rumours come from what evidence do we have that a) we are interested and b) that he is interested. {ed's note - I saw a number of stories a while back mentioning how he would love the move to play Liverpool and similar wordings. Some from his agent, but others were reportedly interviews with him.}

And do you know for a fact that those are the reasons Rafa has left Inter and moved to England? Because I'm sure you are hardly a bastion of correct information to date are you? Are you in the know but keeping it to yourself? No? Didn't think so. And if you weight things up logically, the chances of Rafa returning to Liverpool are between zero and very slim. He turned down a contract in 2009 because he wanted full control of transfers, so do you really think he'd come back and work here if transfers are decided by a committee and not by him? He wouldn't want to be working with Camolli there.

For Steve Parker's posting . .

{Editor's Note: I completely agree with what you are saying, but after thinking long and hard I have decided it is probably not the ideal forum to make such a posting. I hope that you understand.}

Thanks ed, but I don't.
(This is not a personal criticism btw).
I work in the media, hence my pseudonym of Steve Parker and this is precisely the problem - people are scared of talking about this issue!

There are no libellous issues in the posting.
Please reconsider, or is it that the majority of my fellow posters fall into the group I highlighted! ? {ed's note - the problem is that it is not an on-field issue, the main point has been put across, that is all that is needed on a football site. Maybe I should have gone with celebrity-rumours rather than football ones! It would have made a lot more money that is for sure!}

Jorge Fucile insists he is concentrating on his career at Porto amid ongoing reports of a winter transfer window bid from Liverpool.

Anfield manager Roy Hodgson was first linked with a £7million offer for the versatile full-back, who can play on the right or left, in the summer.

Fucile has been earning excellent reviews at Porto and he also featured in five matches as Uruguay finished fourth at the 2010 World Cup finals.

Speculation is suggesting Hodgson will renew his interest in the 26-year-old in January due to concerns over the reliability of Glen Johnson and Paul Konchesky.

But Fucile is quoted as saying in the Portuguese media: "I am under contract at Porto and my focus is here."

Porto, who have reached the knockout stages of the Europa League, are not actively looking to sell, but they admit they will not instantly dismiss an approach for Fucile.

"It is not our intention to sell, but it is normal that we will study offers if they arrive, " directors of the Portuguese club are credited as saying.

Got this off Sky Sports. Disappointed that we didn't move for him in the Summer. But if we want him I hope we move for him early, because if other clubs come in for him we'll just end up being priced out, like we were with Bosingwa, when Porto wanted £8m before Chelsea came in and it went to £16m.

Yes it is a bad idea, Meireles is a nice replacement for him without the temper, bad attitude, or untimely cards. Off the pitch, he was rotting away at West Ham before LFC saved him, but he seemed to have forgotten that at the end of his stay here.

Bad idea, mate, very bad idea!

Thoughts on Gus Poyet as next LFC manager ?
Always been impressed by his man-management skills. Teams he's been involved with at a managerial level always seem to be on the up. Can't be a happy coincidence. I'd bet he has a good relationship with the players he manages too.

I don't think he would leave Brighton at the moment, believe it or not! There are exciting times at Brighton, what with their new stadium etc. I think he wants to take Brighton to the PL.

I ed just woundering if honda is likly to sign because people are sayin a deal is gunna be done by the 26th and also do u think landon donavon wuld be intrested, he loved it at everton and wanted to come back but couldnt afford to get him back so i don't see why we can't try because he was a very good last season?

what do u think? {ed's note - Donovan is not going out on loan, he has already said he wants a rest this winter, so no point in considering him. As for Honda, I see no reason why a deal can't be reached while he is playing in the Asian Nations, plenty of players have made moves in the middle of the World Cup before now.}

no mate it doesn't mean ronny is on it because we are not signing him. however its 99% that we are signing Honda and the deal has to be completed before the 26th Dec.
* *
Why before 26th Dec?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

That was my theory. Check my post "20 Dec 2010 23:12:19" (hope it is okay to post it again):

"First of all, sorry for my English. I am this German guy, who has been on this site lately.

Honda is my favourite player (love his so-called "Mukaiten"-freekicks) and I would dance on my table (not literally) if he would join us. Since I have collected some information and made some thoughts about his activities in the next weeks, I would like to share them with you.

The Asian Cup starts on 7th January and the final is on 29th January. Since Japan is one of the favourites, it is likely that Honda will play in the Asian Cup til the end of the January. I do not think that it would be possible to sign him in this time and the last two days of January would not be enough time to sign him.

So if we are really going to sign him, it has to happen BEFORE the 7th January.

According to Japanese media, the Japanese national team will meet on 28th December to go to a training camp to prepair for the Asian Cup. It is also unlikely that he would leave the national team during the preparation time, so the deal has to be done BEFORE the 28th December.

Furthermore, there will be a television show about Honda on 26th December. Unfortunately, I do not know whether or not it is live. If it is, Honda has to be in Japan on this day, of course.

As a conclusion we have to sign Honda THIS WEEK, if he is really going to join us and the deal is not done yet. The next days would be the last possibilty to present him before the Asian cup.

However, the weather in England might make things complicate. Since I do not live there, I do not know how the situation is, but I assume that many flights are cancelled, aren't they? I do not know how and where the signing will be done, but it will certainly be difficult to meet Honda since he is in Japan at the moment.

These are my thoughts about the signing of Honda, I hope I have not misunderstood any date, because I can not speak Japanese and have to rely on Google translation.

If I can get new information, I will share them you."

As another post writer said whether or not Honda will arrive today is another question, but anyway, the most logical conclusion is: IF he signs, it has to be this week.

the national team are going to camp 26th or 27th and then he would not be available until begining of Feb due to the Cup. paperwork etc is allowed to be completed outside of the window - as long as all logged within trasnfer period.

Yea great shout maka mate but i think it hasn't been said before is because it's a deffinite no-chance. Pato would cost between 30-50 mill and we just can't afford that kind of money. And would he seriously consider playing for us when we don't have CL football next season? If Pato leaves AC Milan (which i don't think he will) he will probably go to Chelsea as he has a good relationship with Ancelotti. And Ancelotti wanted him in the summer but Pato was swayed by Berlusconi to stay.

Great shout though mate considering you're only 13. lol

@22 Dec 2010 13:01:28 Liverpool Rumours ". .sources in germany are saying that liverpool are bidding for marko marin. ."

Liverpool have been blowing hot and cold over Marin for 2 years. Other top clubs around Europe likewise. The only real question is if top clubs have been paying so much attention to him (which they are) what is it that's stopping them making a bid?

RED LENIN

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

It's me again, the German fan, who has been on this site recently.

First of all, I have to say that I have not heard any rumours about Marin and Mertesacker here in Germany. Not even one. So I do not believe the information the first poster has given us, but I can not say for sure, of course.

Furthermore, in my opinion 30 million € for Marin and Mertesacker would be far too much since their performances have not been so great lately. Maybe they are worth 20 million, but not much more.

The reason for not bidding for Marin is certainly his very slight body (1, 7 m and very light) . He falls after almost every contact and that is why he has the reputation of a diver in Germany and many fans do not like him. So I think he would not be right one for playing in Premier League, in which football is even more physical than in Germany.

Moreover, his performances have not been consistent yet (well, it is his third season in the Bundesliga). Sometimes he is not in the starting team and that might also be a reason why bigger clubs do not think that he is ready for a transfer. In addition, Bremen is a pretty big club in Germany and it would not be easy for another club to get him (Özil had only one year left on his contract, that is why he was sold quickly).

Rafa will not come back jesus get it through your thick skulls he is not coming to liverpool because if the way we treated him
* * * * * * * * * * *
The way 'we' treated him is not correct is it. Rafa was fed up of flaying a dead horse with the American's. I was informed a while back that any incoming owners would want the option to bring Rafa back, but needed a scapegoat to stabilize the club and take the blame for poor form, before the new owners take over and capear to be gods by sacking the scapegoat manager and re-uniting the fans with Rafa within 2 years.
This information came from someone I know who is extremely close to the hierachy at the club.
Whether true or not it would be a good move. Rafa is a tactical genius, and got us playing confident if not attacking football. It was only when the Americans were truely grinding the club to a stop that he lost his way.

I have been watching the rumour site and these have been mentioned!

• Carlton Cole?
• David Bentley?
• Shaun Wright Phillips?
• Richard dunne?
• Elmander from Bolton?

Oh my god. . . the above will take us back to thre G Souness Era (sorry Graham - no offence intended)

The last time we played flowing attacking football and had more than 2 Stars was under Roy Evans!

Desperate times ahead if we don't give the youth a chance or attract some quality players!

What ever happened to the murmurings that we would raid Comoli's old club St. Etienne for Dmitri Payet. I think he looks a genuinely good player. Young, pacy, skilled down the wing. That's what we need isn't it? Ed is there still a chance of us getting this lad?

Rafa will not come back jesus get it through your thick skulls he is not coming to liverpool because if the way we treated him, and especially as he will not have full control of transfers FFS just drop it he will NEVER COME BACK TO LIVERPOOL.
some better news tho is that we are in fact looking at elia and edin dzeko, dzeko is a target of comolli but it is not a likely transfer but as i say he is a target. don't believe what you read he will cost more than 5 million. the only reliable paper is the liverpool echo

Afternoon

I was wondering what views people had about Radamael Falcao as a potential signing for a frontman. This guy is an extremley good goalscorer and has attracted interest from Spurs in the past I think? He finished top goalscorer in Portugal last season and has scored like 55 in 65 apps or something similar over the last 2 seasons for Porto. Have a look at him if you havnt allready and let me know what you think of him as a partner for Torres. Prob looking at around 15 million but will def get goals.

Taking to a few Av fans and they reckon Young could be heading to liverpool , spurs don't want him now because of Bale . think he mite be in the last 18 months of his contract
so villa mite sell around 15m

i'm not a great fan of him would only pay 10 max maybe player swap? ?
this is based alot on England games where swp all was seems to look better (i don't want swp)

gary m

ed news? ? {ed's note - there is a lot of talk of him leaving Villa, Spurs are definitely interested and he is supposedly looking for a move back down south. I have to say that I might just be believing those who say that purely because I don't want him and think he would be a terrible signing.}

very good shout mate! Hasn't been mentioned before, and just the kind of player we could do with for the team, and to revive Torres, Woy, and the fans! Would take ambition, a large contract, and persistence, but well done mate! More posts from you please. with a name next time? Merry Christmas everyone!

Great shout though mate considering you're only 13. lol

Just wondering why Adebayour hasn't been mentioned more. He's not getting a game at City and he'd be a great partner for Torres. Say what you like about his attitude but I doubt we could sign anyone better in jan. What do you think about his availability ed?

Mushroom, there is a difference between GROSS spending and NET spending. Rafa had to sell to buy quite a bit and made a profit on quite a few of his transfers.
For long term sustainability the most important thing to have is a good youth system and rafa brought Borrel from Barca who helped develop fabregas and co. I fear they may not stay for long now. .

{Editor's Note: Putting aside all of the gross/net issues, the point is that for quarter of a billion pounds the squad was not as strong as it should have been.}
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Thank you for backing up my point Editor.

Dear Ed, I know you're sick of hearing about rafa but you can't just "put aside" all the gross/net issues.
There is definitely a correlation between net spending and league position.

{Editor's Note: So how come Spurs and Manchester City have failed to win the league? Chelsea have not spent significant amounts for a number of years - but they are the current champions. Arsenal have restricted their spending and have always been there or thereabouts. There are no excuses for his poor spending.}

Richard dunne to Liverpool €4m solid player

According to the daily mirror he is said to be now 4th choice centre back at aston villa a team currently fighting relegation in fifteenth. Why would richard dunne benefit our team in anyway when we have many up and coming defenders, this is just pushing them further down the pecking order. Richard dunne will not be coming to liverpool for any fee.

If it was a straight choice between Roy and Rafa then Rafa wins every time, but if it is a straight choice between Rafa and a younger manager with the vision to take us forward for many years. Someone who wants to play attacking football and who will give the good youngsters a chance then Rafa would not be my choice.

Good player, quick & skillful on the ball

Saw him play down the wing during the world cup, someone we could use

What do u think ed? He can do what we expected Babel to do

{Editor's Note: I think he would be an excellent solution on the left.}

Exactly. Seen the way he gets the ball into the box, with his dribling skills & through balls. With torres striking we could see a good partnership

Let's hope they they get him.

Hey ed I'm the boy from Stevenage from ages ago wondering if anyone remembers me I was the one who said Ashley Young will probably go to Liverpool my source: Kyle young his brother who plays for Arsenal.
Anyway bit of background I live in Stevenage and i've been speaking to Kyle and asking him about his brother firstly he says his brother is back in training and I asked him do you thInk Ashley will move and he said most likely as Ashley was really dissapointed that oneil left and Milner too so villa took 2 huge steps back and he said Liverpool and spurs both want to sign him. However Kyle said that he doesn't want to go to spurs because they have to many wingers and Ashley really wants to play for England. Btw Kyle is good at football! Plays for Arsenal. Anyway I'm not really a Liverpool Fan I support Stevenage but I've enjoyed watching Liverpool for a few years was pretty cool when you beat Madrid 4-0 and I'll never forget that amazing game vs Chelsea 4-4 was it? Anyway hope you enjoyed Reading the news i've never posted on here I just read lots of the sites this is definetly the busy one! Ashley will stay with Villa til the summer and make a choice depending onwhere they finish trust me. I'm a teenager I wouldn't waste all that time making that up got flipping GCSE :(

Does anyone think we should have a crack at AC Milan's Alexandre Pato? We'd have to pay top draw, £20-25m, but I really think we need to spend that sort of money on a top quality striker, sick of seeing the 4-5-1 being played. He is young keen, with european experience and skill. Hes lightning fast, could be a good partner for Torres. Might not be first team since the arrival of Ibra(I know its a loan but I can see him staying), Robinho and Cassano. What do you think ed?
