It's not cashing in if all the money and then some goes into buying players- case in point suarez.

Good morning Ed

Is there any truth that we are trying to get Aussie stopper Matt Ryan in Jan window please? Also do you no much about him is he any good?

Believable15 Unbelievable4

{Ed002's Note - I really don't know.}

15 Jan 2015 11:50:00
tranfermarkt rates him at 3 m euros - he's 22yo, plays for Bruges.

He's better than any other goalkeeper we have been linked to.

Watch his performance against Torino.

Far too short for my liking as he isn't even 6ft. Would too be easily dominated by opposition players.

You really have to ask what the scouts actually do if this is the best the can come up with.

He looks good in a league where keepers are easily protected and don't have to deal with teams reliant on aerial bombardment.

Ryan is an excellent keeper. While he had a couple of lapses during the world cup, this is not normal for him. He is very reliable. His distribution by foot and hand is excellent. While he may not be the tallest, you don't really notice this when he is playing as he is pretty good above his head. I watched him develop with the Mariners and would be keen for him to join. He is held in high regard in Belgium and Australia.

Very good.
Real Madrid had him watched last year, I believe. Also, Spurs took a good look.

He's the exact opposite of Migs in his ball distribution. He's your real modern keeper/sweeper type player. Would love to see him at Liverpool.

Sorry lads, but he is too short for our league, he'll be OK in Belgium or somewhere like Italy where keepers aren't hassled the way they are here, but he it won't work out for him as he will be physically dominated all the time.

Agree0 Disagree1

{Ed002's Note - The cross bars are of course lower in Belgium.}

16 Jan 2015 17:30:15
I heard that rumour Ed :)

Loris? Shay given? They weren't exactly big keepers.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Jan 2015 10:36:10
Loris and Given are both over 6 foot(6'2"?), so that argument is fairly moot, he is going to struggle with the high balls into the box and dealing with the lumpen nature of some of the football that is played in the the premier league.
From what I've seen of him he looks too small and has a lack of physical presence which is important for a keeper in the premier league. Just because you are desperate to get rid of Mignolet don't replace him with the first keeper who throws himself around a bit on YouTube.
It's a crucial position that we need to get right and I'm affraid this lad isn't the right player for the job.

A week ago someone mentioned aussie keeper Matt Ryan. I see a couple of papers are suggesting we're interested. Heard anything Eds?
From the little I've seen he looks a decent keeper with good distribution and is quite vocal. Pulled off a blinding save last week in their first group game of the Asian cup, ball looked destined for the top corner.

Believable23 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - from what I have been told there has been an enquiry from us, that has been leaked to try and bring others who are interested out of the woodwork.}

15 Jan 2015 07:48:00
Ed001 - a leak from Ryan's management or from Bruges?

Agree3 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - Bruges, they are looking for more money.}

15 Jan 2015 08:23:01
Seen him in a few games now. Not sure if he is the real thing YET, as he seems to loose his head (Like Grobelaar), but the kids got a big talent for sure

Thanks Ed001. Presumed that would be the case, but just wanted to check.

This bloke is 5ft11 just as well puttin Warwick Davis between the sticks

15 Jan 2015 17:21:20
Completely agree, far too short for the premier league. We are the worst in Europe when it comes to scouting and transfersz

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jan 2015 01:00:34
So I hear that Aussie GK Matt Ryan is being looked at.
He was voted GK of the year in Belgium and has been doing pretty good at the Asia cup so far (albeit against mediocre opposition).
Wouldn't cost all that much I would think and would certainly mean the end to the (terrible) reign of Mignolet

15 Jan 2015 04:51:01
He has great distribution, commands the area and is a decent shot stopper! He had a poor World Cup but is very young. He would be a gem and cheap to buy! But I very much doubt it would happen.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jan 2015 05:19:32
He's played two seasons in Belgium and won 'keeper of the year both seasons. Great young player, still only 22. Would fit with out play style too as he is excellent with his feet.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jan 2015 06:32:49
He is a good keeper but a little on the small side hence why he left the Central Coast for Belgium and not a top league

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jan 2015 07:28:12
Would love him as 1 of 2 keepers at the club.

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jan 2015 07:45:55
@KingCarlos

His height is not the reason he left CCM. He left to develop his game in a better league and play first team football. Belgium is a good development league and he was promised first team football. It would be unrealistic to think that a 20 year old Australian keeper would go straight from the A-League to EPL, La Liga or Bundesliga. Look what happened to Mitch Langerak - top keeper but has sat on the Dortmund bench for 4-5 years.

Agree1 Disagree0

The (terrible) reign of Mignolet will be exactly the same as the (terrible) reign of anyone else unless the coaching is changed.

We have a goalkeeping coach who actively makes keepers worse the longer he trains them. Change that before we start signing new GKs.

Any inclination Achterberg will be going as part of the 'review' eds?

Agree1 Disagree0

{Ed001's Note - all the coaching staff are under review.}

Let's hope the review is concluded quickly then and we get a decent go coach and force Rogers to employ a defensive coach as well (if he's still with us that is)

Agree1 Disagree0

15 Jan 2015 10:03:30
he is 5.11 which is short for a keeper. There are a couple of other decent keepers of that size such as Casillas for example so shouldn't write him off.

Agree2 Disagree0

15 Jan 2015 17:16:18
Casillas isn't that great when pressured by big players and is poor on crosses, same as Barthez and any other sub 6ft keeper you can think of.

Matthews is too short to be any good in the premier league.

Can you imagine the fun that teams like Chelsea, Stoke, Palace and WBA would have with him?

Poor scouting again if true.

Agree0 Disagree1

15 Jan 2015 22:28:57
Every, and I mean EVERY keeper has their weaknesses. Casillas may be poor on crosses; but over the last 10 years or so, he is simply the best keeper I've seen since Oliver Kahn(who also had weaknesses, though more ego related).
5' 11" is fine if a keeper knows what he's doing.

Agree1 Disagree0

16 Jan 2015 04:25:56
He's 5ft 11, but he can jump and raised his arms above his head, being slightly smaller will make him more agile and quicker of the mark, the type we need for a sweeper keeper who is good with feet! Seems a good choice imo, but like any signing, (if he signs, that is) only time will tell.

Agree2 Disagree0

16 Jan 2015 17:39:14
We have two keepers who are poor at dealing with crosses, do we need a third? Too short to be a success here because of the physical nature of the league. He doesn't look exceptional enough to make up for his physical shortcomings(no pun intended), again stand by my remark about poor scouting, if true.

Agree0 Disagree1

16 Jan 2015 22:39:21
Ray clemence was only 6ft, not that much different to 5'11, barthez and casillas were similar, we shouldn't judge until we have seen them play in a lfc shirt, isn't there a famous quote about judging something by size? Lol

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Jan 2015 10:40:32
Barthez was shocking in the premier league when teams worked out that he couldn't deal with the physical stuff, don't you remember? Cassilas isn't a great keeper, it's fair to say he hasbeen lucky that he's been in teams that dominate possession and doesn't have a lot to do beyond the odd save here and there, remember the drubbing at Anfield we gave them, he looked like he couldn't deal with much beyond shots straight at him.

Agree0 Disagree0

18 Jan 2015 10:38:15
Casillas isn't great?are you for real?he was voted into the UEFA team of the year 6 times!You really are clueless, he might not be a great keeper now but he definitely was.
