ED002

Bruno Fernandes last night just thanked and said goodbye to Sporting Lisbon FC on his social media account.

United or Liverpool bound?

Much appreciated.

Ok so can some just come to there senses that if we ever had to sing Fekir now he is not going to come as backup?

I doubt we will be adding to the midfield department.

ed001 I have to say I feel sorry for the Newcastle fans losing Rafa today. Makes me so happy to have the owners we have. The Newcastle fans are great and deserve better than Mike Ashley.

{Ed001's Note - hopefully they will have a new owner soon.}

Agree1 Disagree1

24 Jun 2019 17:38:29
Well if they don't get a new owner they'll be back in the Championship soon.

24 Jun 2019 18:59:33
You’re getting hold of the wrong end of the stick here grino75 imo.
The fact that the current system of ownership allows this to happen in the first place is the primary problem.
If there was a way (similar to Germany’s perhaps) where club ownership was invested in the fans, it could help protect against these personality / power struggles between individuals and ensure that the club was run for the benefit of the majority.
The irony in all this is that the bloated values of English PL clubs is based on people’s television habits, the fans have the power to force change only they don’t know it.

24 Jun 2019 21:44:42
Do you think there is genuine interest in the purchase of Newcastle United?

Wouldn’t put it past Ashley that it’s a crock of sh*t€ just to try and keep the fans placated

And no doubt there’s a slight increase in value of the club e dry time there is “interest “ from abroad.

{Ed001's Note - there has been plenty of interest but this is the first time a deal has looked likely.}

24 Jun 2019 10:43:40
I really want lfc to bid for every player every other club bids for, keep on bidding take it to the wire and then sign no one.
Would be very satisfactory.

24 Jun 2019 14:38:15
Having achieved what objective exactly? Do you really think the club functions according to the pleasure of the fans (in seeing bids made and rejected) all summer long?

Long, farewell, auf weidersein good night?

I have just seen the Lionesses progress to the last 8 of the women's world cup. What a thorughly professional outfit our ladies are. They have been spat at, elbowed, stamped on, the Cameroon players were shocking as was the ref. But not once did our ladies surround the ref, shout, complain. They got on with it to win 3-0. Proud of Endland tonight. Embarassed for Cameroon and a very weak ref .

24 Jun 2019 03:54:33
Pretty disgraceful behaviour from the Cameroon players, spitting, elbowing and nasty tackles. For the two goals that went to VAR the final decision was correct, their remonstrations after each decision was embarrassing. The referee was poor in that she didn’t give England a penalty and Cameroon a red card because she was afraid of making the situation worse. I have never seen a team as petulant as that Cameroon team, it was embarrassing to watch.

24 Jun 2019 20:12:42
And, chrickey this will be seeing a lot of thumbs down, I'm starting to like Phil Neville. Sorry.

24 Jun 2019 22:49:07
I really can’t watch Women’s football. The quality is so poor and anyone who says otherwise is just kidding themselves.
There’s numerous examples of Women’s national teams being beaten convincingly by under 15’s boys teams (Australia were beaten 7-0 by Celtic’s U15s and there are many examples of this) .
I’m not criticising them for playing, if they love the game they should play it but for me it’s like watching paint dry. I could go down to the park on a Sunday and probably see a better game of football.
Before I get bashed I’m really not criticising anyone, just saying it like it is.

Will be interesting to see if Klopp will start Keita in majority of games next season. He has had a difficult time adapting to the the Premier League but he has had a full season to settle. He has shown glimpses of what can be expected. Hopefully we see him fully settled and ready to fire on all cylinders this coming season.

We are stocked in midfield with Hendo, Milner, Gini, Ox, Shaq, Fab, Lallana and Keita.

Ed001 did say we could still make an offer for Fekir but do not see where the space is for him unless at least two of our current CM's leave i. e. Shaq and Lallana who do not seem to feature in the plans going forward.

Ox will be like a new signing and least he was not rushed back and would have had more than enough time to recover for the start of next season.

Thoughts?

23 Jun 2019 14:45:42
Fekir is a no10 style CAM - none of the above midfielders fit that mould naturally. In addition to that, he can play False 9 role that Bobby does so is fantastic cover/ competition for him too.

Fekir is never a central mid.

23 Jun 2019 15:39:38
Hopefully we can actually have two good domestic cup runs, perhaps a nicer CL group and also the world clib cup. 60-70 games next season should see plenty of room for everyone. We were quite lucky with injuries and some players definitely played last season when perhaps a rest was due.

23 Jun 2019 18:57:13
I think Keita will be a regular starter. Expect him, fabinho, hendo and gini to be the 4 main midfielders, with ox and Milner just behind them, but form will play a much bigger part than previously, because that's tremendous depth.

23 Jun 2019 18:59:01
Shaq Attack, Fekir is not going to sing on the basis of sitting on the bench being backup to Firmino.

The club will also not sign Fekir and let him sit on the bench earning massive wages as a substitute.

Fekir can play in a midfield three with two CM's behind him. He is a midfielder, an attacking one.

23 Jun 2019 21:49:56
naby will be great next season.

23 Jun 2019 21:56:55
Fekir wudnt graft like bobby does, but we are in need of some creativity in midfield for me bruno Fernandes is everything we need but looks like we ain't pursuing him, looks like he might be off too man united .

24 Jun 2019 06:26:00
I’m with you Hailstones, plus he scored plenty of goals last season too, which is one area we are lacking when the front three aren’t scoring.

24 Jun 2019 07:02:20
Perhaps you can explain to me why we came within a whisker of buying Fekir last year then Max, despite having all the players you’ve mentioned above? He would get plenty of games being able to play in 2 different positions.

Hailstones, work rate is a huge part of fekir’s game.

24 Jun 2019 07:04:48

24 Jun 2019 07:06:14
Also, applying your logic to midfield competition and perceived lack of game time, perhaps you can explain to me how Bruno Fernandes doesn’t apply to what you’re saying about how we fit Fekir in?

24 Jun 2019 07:43:48
Shaq, we never signed Fekir last season and instead went signed Shaqiri who played in midfield this past season.

24 Jun 2019 13:41:42
As it's been pointed out we have the numbers in midfield but is everyone convinced we have the quality? When the front 3 don't fire we need that added quality to create something out of nothing. I believe we need to sacrifice a few (prob Lallana, Shaq) and bring in a proper playmaker. We'd then have options to rotate the front 3 if needed.

Having football discussion with mates about the term 'world class', we concluded that in the past everybody pretty much agreed who those players were - Maradonna, Pele, Platini, Maldini, etc, etc. They stood head and shoulders above every other player. Just look at Ed001's legend list! Also, many of these players skills stood out even as children.

Now, other than Messi and Ronaldo, 'world class' is simply used as an adjective in place of 'good' player.

Genuine question - has football moved on so much that just about every good player is deemed 'world class' or is the game no longer producing these sublime players?

{Ed025's Note - they dont come along that often LF and thats why they stand out, i agree with you though that the term "world class" is bandied about too often mate..

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Jun 2019 09:00:30
Yeah this 'world class' business has gone too far. After the 90's I'd say, world class players started to dissapear. Now like you say there's a couple, arguably a few but not as many as there was back in the day.

Messi is an incredible player but would I class him as 'world class'? no tbh I wouldn't, he's never been tested in any other league, he's dominated the La Liga all of his career and imo it's a poor league, if he came to the premier league and dominated it then sure, world class 100% but would he? I have my doubts, he'd get hammered over here imo, it'd be far too physical for him to handle. Very good player, excellent player but world class? no.

Ronaldo, yes, world class.

{Ed025's Note - it looks like its only ronaldo and bobby firmino thats world class now then salah.. :)

23 Jun 2019 09:34:20
Ronaldo and Messi are the only world class footballers around at the moment, in my opinion.

There are several that could one day approach that level, i. e. Mbappe, but until they are able to match the incredible game contributions of the above two. no one is coming close.

As for the whole Messi only played in one country, etc. For me, that should not have a bearing on the whole world class and best player debate. We always complain about player loyalty, how players disrespect their clubs by demanding moves whenever things have gotten tough. Messi has perserved with Barca, particularly in the difficult last few years, and pushed the team passed the finishing line more times than I can count.

As for Ronaldo, I am a huge fan, but I cannot deny that he is something of a mercenary player. He goes to whoever offers him the most money and whoever can provide him title opportunities in competent leagues. Ronaldo for me is a complete striker; he has all offensive aspects covered. Messi on the other hand has the same attributes but offers more, particularly when it comes to creativity, vision and passing range.

End of the day, both are incredible players that have captivated the world and will go down in history as two of the greats. When it comes to best, however. How do you even categorize that? Football is a team game, requiring 10 teammates around you. Singling out one individual, who fulfills a certain role, seems very complicated. In a sport like tennis, where it is an individual sport, the question is better suited. But, to a team based sport like football, singling out one individual just seems counter-intuitive.

Sorry to go off on a tangent but I am always talking about this with my mates, who are Man United fans, so you can imagine which player they consider better.

23 Jun 2019 09:22:51
Hahaha Ed25, you really rate the lad don't you mate? ;) . Nice to see you rate him that highly lol :) .

{Ed025's Note - when you hear it so much you tend to believe it mate.. :)

23 Jun 2019 12:06:32
Would we not put van dijk in to the world class bracket?
I certainly would. Since he has come into our side he has lifted the performance of every other defender in the team and has been flawless in his performances .
Granted he has not been doing this for numerous seasons and probably needs to keep performing at this level and winning trophies to get into the all time greats.
But based on this season alone van dijk is in the world class bracket.
All this leading to him not being the favourite to win ballon d'Or .

23 Jun 2019 10:26:34
So if I keep saying 'you're a Liverpool fan' do you think you might end up believing it Ed mate? did I mention, you're a Liverpool fan ;) .

{Ed025's Note - im too realistic to ever be a liverpool fan salah mate.. :)

23 Jun 2019 14:43:18
The fact that you hang out so much with us, and absolutely love it, already shows your blood is half red Ed025. Give it some more time and the switch will be complete. Too late to do anything about it. 😜.

{Ed025's Note - i also smoke and rink a lot ArAy and i know thats not good for me either.. :)

23 Jun 2019 22:41:16
Salah, you’ve got to be having a laugh regarding messi, the guy truly is one of the very best to ever play the game! So what if he’s only ever played in La Liga? He’s played plenty of European games, scored over 100 UCL goals including 26 against English teams. Pele played the entirety of his career in Brazil but is considered to be one of the best ever. For what it’s worth, I think messi could do what he does in any league in the world, he’s one of the exceptional players who can take getting kicked and will just get back up and try twice as hard, hazard was the same in this respect. Also, he’s not the type of player who needs acres of space to excel like many foreign exports from la liga or even the Serie A. So in my opinion when discussing world class players, messi is the first name that comes into my head and rightly so!

{Ed025's Note - its a pity that hes a horrible little prick really JK, very very talented footballer though mate..

24 Jun 2019 02:15:48
Forget World Class, any time a player is mentioned they're referred to as a star. Even reserve players I've never heard of, if there's a loan move in the offing they're called Joe Blow, a Liverpool star.

23 Jun 2019 23:31:03
I completely agree ed002 but then again that seems to be a bit of a trend with the really top players! Maradona wasn’t exactly a great role model but a phenomenal player; paolo di canio was and is a fascist pig; Eric cantona was an arrogant thug, the list goes on. If we’re judging players simply on ability alone, then messi, in my eyes is in the top 3 players to ever kick a ball.

{Ed025's Note - i cant disagree with that JK..

24 Jun 2019 09:10:57
'he’s one of the exceptional players who can take getting kicked and will just get back up and try twice as hard'

What like he did at Anfield mate? do I need to list more occasions? (please let me know, I'd be happy to) I'm not saying he's a bad player or anything like that lol it's clear how fantastic he is but world class? nah not for me. He's dominated a crap league all of his career, he hasn't been tested properly and never will be so the world class bracket so many people put him in, I don't know, not for me. If it doesn't go his way he throws his dummy out, time and time again, he's a total kn*bhead who thinks he's gods gift and he really isn't.

Ronaldo has done it in multiple leagues, he deserves the world class status.

As previously said, the world class status is banded about far too much, it's got beyong a joke these days and there's not many players who I'd class as world class right now. VVD? maybe. Alisson? if he continues his form then for sure, he's the best keeper in the world right now. World class? it's hard to say time will tell.

24 Jun 2019 09:59:14
Interesting debate about what is 'world class'

For me it would be a label for the best in the world or in other words a world 11.

I do agree that in earlier generations there was a lot more competition and there seemed to be a lot more highly skilled players at the top of the game. I'm not if that means the players now aren't world class or that in general the world class standard bracket has lowered slightly.

I mean for definite we would put Ronaldo and messi in that category but as an example is VVD the best in the world in his position? If yes then that makes in world class in my opinion.

Just my take on it that's all.

24 Jun 2019 10:02:50
Salah, listing a handful of games as opposed to listing the hundreds where he has played the opposition off the park doesn’t really help your argument. It sounds like what you’re really arguing is that ronaldo is the better player and that’s fair enough, that’s your opinion, ronaldo is a brilliant player but to say that someone who has scored 603 goals in 687 games isn’t world class is just plain wrong. You say ronaldo has done it in multiple leagues but ronaldo only had 1 and a half outstanding seasons in the premier league, it was in la liga where he became a world beater and now he’s moved to Juve who dominate the Serie A, it’s a very slow league which Juve walk every year. Just a question, how do you rate pele, iniesta, maldini? All world class players who stayed with one club.

{Ed001's Note - the 603 goals bit is a nonsense. I know players in non-league who have got near those sort of goalscoring figures, would they be world class? You have to take into account the opposition they are facing, you even said the same later on when breaking down Ronaldo's career! Messi's goals in the Champions League and against the Madrid sides are impressive, his 4 each week against the likes of Malaga are not, as the Malagas etc of La Liga roll over and give up when they face Barca far too often. Messi is a great player and clearly one of the most talented in the world right now, but he doesn't work as hard as Pele did, he far too often goes into his shell and just accepts defeat for my liking, just as he did against us at Anfield. By the way, Pele played for 2 clubs in two different countries. Iniesta has done the same. It helps your argument if you actually know the facts.

I hate this world class argument. It is so subjective and pointless. The only discussion should be whether or not they make a World XI, if they do, they are world class, if not then they aren't.}

24 Jun 2019 18:37:34
I'm not arguing anything JK mate, it's a debate and my opinion is Messi shouldn't be classed as world class. You have a different opinion which is fine but I think both my opinion and yours are totally irrelevant tbh because it's a daft debate.

As Ed1 has said (great post btw Ed1) 'as the Malagas etc of La Liga roll over and give up when they face Barcelona far too often' EXACTLY! - it's hard to add anything to what you've said.

When he has some sort of a challenge he spits his dummy out and can't handle it. Can you imagine him playing in this league week in week out? he'd be a failure and it's as simple as that, it was almost as if he admitted it himself after we slammed them, when he made the comments about VVD which is one of many reasons why I, again, will not put him in such a bracket. He's very, very good, that's as far as I'll go.

{Ed001's Note - as I said though, while I do question his stats, which are inflated by playing against teams that would struggle to give English League One teams a game the way they play against Barca, I would still consider him world class, despite his issues. No one is perfect, but he is the best at what he does and you would find a spot for him in any world XI you put together imo.}

On this day in 2017, Mo Salah signed for the club. Since then,

104 Apps, 71 Goals
Champions League
2x PL Golden Boot
1x PFA Players' POTS
1x PL POTS
1x FWA POTY
1x Puskas Award
1x LFC POTS
2x African POTY
Most goals in a PL season

Not bad for £30 million!

What about Tierney as a back up for Robbo? No idea if he has been considered or even if he’d want to play second fiddle but.

Agree0 Disagree5

22 Jun 2019 17:21:18
He's already second fiddle to Robbo at international level. No chance. I've also read snippets that think he's Arsenal bound.

23 Jun 2019 10:15:53
Absolutely no way he'd leave Celtic to be backup. He's a true fan of the team, and will only leave to play regularly at the top level. Great player though, if he does go to arsenal they're signing a gem.
