Ed 1 or Ed 666 if and it’s a big if salah goes at end of the season who do you think we should sign to replace him? I assume the scouts will always be looking and have probably identified someone (maybe Diaz? ) . Secondly if salah goes do we try and tie mane down to a longer term contract since his is ending soon or let him go as well? Bobby for me is the special player he is one I’d be focusing on too.

{Ed001's Note - wouldn't Jota be the replacement? With Diaz replacing Mane and Carvalho replacing Bobby. That would be the way I would see it.}

Are we thinking Carvalho is the Bobby replacement Ed001? I can see why you’d think that but as he is a left sided attacker I was viewing it more as a replacement for Mane who can be an understudy to Diaz. I could be wrong though. Jota is rubbish off the right so I don’t see him being the Salah replacement, I think we’d definitely bring someone if he was to go, someone like Bowen or Raphina. Similarly I can’t think of many players who would even be capable of replacing Bobby, Joao Felix perhaps?

The scary thing about our forward situation is that any of Salah, Firmino, Mane, Minamino and Origi could all leave in one summer, or equally none of them could leave at all. I don’t know what the plan is but I really hope there is one in place because it all feels very up in the air and there’s a lot of different moving parts. If any of them should go this summer I personally feel it should be Mane.

{Ed001's Note - I was told he is more of a central player.}

Have you seen much of Carvalho Ed? I've never seen him play but he's obviously highly thought of.

{Ed001's Note - no mate. Not a lot sorry.}

Ed1. U reckon carvalho good enough to come in and compete for place right away? Have seen nothing of him myself do idea what he like.

{Ed001's Note - I don't know.}

He' been playing as an attacking midfielder all season for Fulham. I'm not convinced he'd be a good Firmino replacement because he's not strong enough in the air to lead the line. I can see Carvalho and Elliott either side of Fabinho in the future though. People will say it's too offensive but i'd point those people in the direction of when he had Lallana and Wijnaldum (both natural attacking/ wide midfielders) playing either side of Henderson in a trio. The thing that makes Klopp as good as he is as a manager, is his ability to make flair players work hard.

I tend to agree with you ed001. If Salah goes the funds might be used to strengthen another position or perhaps a change of system similar to when Coutinho left and we never signed a like for like replacement.

{Ed001's Note - that's how I see it, there is no like for like for Salah.}

The reality is that the funds we get if we sell Salah will be peanuts once disbursements are accounted for. No one is paying top whack for a guy about to turn 30 with one year on his contract. We’d be lucky to see £40m once all the agent fees, taxes and other payments that need to be made are accounted for, which goes nowhere in the current market.

If Mane, Firmino and Salah go in the summer (given that they’re all entering the last 12 months of their contract and they’re getting to 30 it is probable) and we don’t at least try and replace two of them, we are going to be very light up top if our only forward options are Jota, Diaz and Carvalho. Add to that the fact that Origi is gone and it’s very likely that Minamino will also be moved on, it would be a stupid idea not to bring in at least two attackers.

With regards to strength in depth and quality I don’t think this club has ever been better off with regards to the 5 forwards we currently have. To lose 3 of them and go from 5 to 3 with one of them being an unproven kid is surely a step we don’t want to be taking.

I know the players can’t play forever but with the new rule on 5 subs coming in then surely we need to be trying to maintain that depth rather than deplete it.

There is no way we let any of the current front 5 go and not replace them. Our strength in depth is the reason why we are competing on all fronts. Why are people ok with sacrificing all this to see the squad being trimmed down?
Not replacing squad players like Divock and Taki is fine. Not replacing Bobby, Mane or Salah is criminal.

can fully see Carvalho being groomed for the Bobby-9 role. And I really hope so too cos I don't want to see him played in our midfield and have his natural attacking game diminsihed.

Faith, I’ve not seen Carvalho play but in the clips I’ve seen of him, he is more like a Coutinho then a Bobbie.

OilRed - I was trying to be careful with my words to say Bobby-9 role and not Bobby himself. If he is going to be more like Coutinho. then he won't really have a spot in this team unless he is being groomed for the wing. I see him as totally capable of playing that #9 role in the way we play it and would fit his natural game too.
