Morning Ed0666. I think it was yourself who said you don't think Konate is at Gomez level as yet. What's your opinion on how his first season is going? I think he looks a bit rough round the edges but have generally been quite impressed. He's obviously big and strong and hopefully with time his positional sense will improve and ball watching will be cut down. One thing I've been disappointed with though is his lack of threat in the opposition box. We regularly see Virgil and Matip get on the end of set pieces but not so much with Konate.

{Ed0666's Note - I think he hasn’t fully adapted from playing in a 3 with Leipzig to playing in a two with us. You can still see a legacy of that with the way he plays. I think when he truly adapts he’ll be very good. For me he’s a little cumbersome and with his physicality shouldn’t get bullied but does on occasion but give him time he should be fine. It’s also extremely difficult to get any rhythm going when you’re not playing week in week out like VVD so hard to judge him really.

Yeah it's obviously Virgil and one other in the side. Poor old Gomez hasn't had much of a look in at centre back. He's got some stick for his performance on Sunday but he's not Trent. He's not going to pick out a man in the box or whip in a dangerous ball. I thought he played fine. A bit like when Carragher played full back. Just no frills. If Milner was available then I think he would've partnered Konate in the middle. I think next season Konate will be immense and no offence to Matip who I think has been fine this season but if I had the choice out of who to keep between him and Gomez then its Gomez every time.

I’m happy so far with him, looks better and better as season goes on. I really hope we are keeping Gomez though.

As an ex-striker, Konate’s goal threat is poor. I thought he would be dominating aerial battles in the opposition’s box.

sorry but Matip has been more than fine this season, I have been impressed by his number of games played for a start, and he has been coming out with the ball and opening their defense, so Matip and VVD for me .

Ed001 I agree on that mate. Not really sure how they decide them. Must be the same hat they pulled Southgates name out of for the England Job.

I like Matip I think he’s done well this season. I’m also a big fan of Gomez and Konate has looked the part when he’s played. I don’t think anyone else in world football can match our 4 centre half’s in the squad.

Don’t think anyone could match our front 5 either and they all probably get paid less a week combined than Messi at PSG who has about 3 goals.

There were plenty on here wanted Matip gone because apparently he can't play 2 consecutive games. They seem to have gone rather quiet of late.
To put things into perspective United paid £80 odd million for their defensive misfit SlabHead who plays like Lovren after a bottle of rakia.
Astute recruitment.

Matip has played very well overall this season with the odd sideways miss pass that has luckily for him gone unpunished. He ability with the ball at his feet has also been vital on a few occasions to suck in low block defence and create room for others. However when I consider his age, the potential of Gomez and Konate, Gomez being homegrown I do hope that Gomez stays and battles it out with Konate to partner VVD for years to come and eventually those two create their own partnership. Matip has been great but I wouldn’t want to lose Gomez as a result of sticking with him longer term.

{Ed0666's Note - I love Joel tho it will break my heart if & when he leaves. The most unassuming multi millionaire footballer you could ever hope to meet. I’d love him and Joe to stay.

Do people realise that Matip is the same age as Vvd.

Get rid of Matip because he’s 30 and keep Gomez and Konate to partner Vvd long term who is also 30.

Aren’t we also wanting rid of Mane and Salah who are both about to turn 30.

30 must be the new 40 on here lol.

See your point JK23 but VVD is a different class so age is less of a concern there for me. Same with Salah etc. I’m not commenting on who is better out of Matip or Gomez only if we let Gomez leave now and keep Matip we will have to replace Matip sooner and also lose a HG player. If we keep Gomez at the expense of Matip we have a proven quality HG talent for next 10 years. Ruthless yes but it makes sense to me.
