I'd be interested to get your opinion Ed1 on which club, between City and Liverpool, will be in better shape when their respective managers leave assuming that happens in 2 years time.

I feel that both teams need abit of a refresh in the next 12-18 months, it'll be interesting to see who does a better job of it and how well levels are maintained when a handover is eventually done.

{Ed001's Note - City have got unlimited money to spend, so they will be in better shape as they can just keep buying until they get it right.}

Ed001 how do City have unlimited money to spend when owners aren’t allowed / meant to put in their own money to spend on transfers?

JK, City signed signed very lucrative 'sponsorship' deals with companies that also happen to be owned by the same/ companies. The money him generated from these deals acts as income which can offset purchases for FFP etc. Plus they win lots of competitions every year. I'm sure there is more to it than that as well!

Stuie cheers for the reply mate. Yeah I’ve seen the sponsorship deals they have been signing so does that mean Chelsea and now Newcastle will start doing the same or any other club that gets taken over by Rich owners and then coincidentally start spending lots of money.

City do win lots of competitions but I doubt the League cup wins funded the 100 mill Grealish move 😜.

It's a farce. They've just signed another sponsorship deal which makes a mockery of the rules imo. It's never going to be a level playing field. As in most walks of life, if you have money you can pretty much ignore the rules lads.

Its not cheating though🤔.

It was interesting that when Newcastle were taken over the other PL clubs met to override the existing rules on sponsorships etc (at least for this season) to curb spending - thus preventing Newcastle from acquiring unlimited funds, at least for the time being. At least that’s what I think they did but my knowledge of things financial is ‘limited’ at best.

Remember they were found guilty but got off on a technicality…none of the big associations are likely to want to go down that route with city again so they have a pass as long as don’t do anything stupid.

08 Jan 2022 10:50:42
Surely something has to be done to stop this eds? Or do we have to just take it on the chin. This is the sort of thing that is driving people away from the game. Turning into formula 1!

08 Jan 2022 11:20:48
1jj surely spending 100 mill on Grealish comes under the stupid umbrella 🤣.

WDW hit on something I also read about realistic sponsorship deals for Newcastle, IE the Saudis not being able to rename the stadium in a billion pound deal.

If the power exists to stop nufc from doing this the surely when mcfc's current deals expire there needs to be some policing of market value.

I'm sure J W Henry said after their ground naming rites deal "I'd be interested to know the loosing bid"

Three new Man City sponsors from UAE announced recently, the owners basically sponsor themselves.
All sponsors unharmed by the economic effects of CV as well of course.

Its interesting how small their group is tho. Take away Mendy, Palmer (who had played a handful of games) and Ilic (has he even played) and they are top of the League and in the CL with 19 players. They will off course replace Mendy and add an extra forward at some stage. Still, for this season, its quality over quality. Room for thought.

It’s a continuous process of refinement through money though IR.
They’re here after billions spent to rapidly get them to this position and, as Ed001 said, if they buy / recruit poorly they have the finances to speedily correct it until they get it right.

Seen this earlier. It’s no my post just a copy and paste. Interesting thoughts though.

I don't think people (including some LFC fans) understand how different world Football will look without Klopp. People don't understand the monster he is fighting everyday in Man City. This man is saving Football. Let me explain.

If Klopp leaves tomorrow morning, Man city will win the league by 25-30 points. City will cruise through the league every year and be well rested enough throughout the year to win the UCL and complete a quadruple. They will buy even more players.

Even if Guardiola leaves, City will still beat everyone handsomely. With 2 world class players for every position, the coach is only there to pluck fruits and take credit. This is the most powerful squad in Football history. Liverpool are far behind, by comparison. It is Klopp that fills the massive gap created by City's money power and keeps them in check.

And then we have Newcastle coming up. Football is on the verge of breaking apart. Klopp is tiny thread keeping it together.

I don't disagree Juicer and clearly there are questions to be asked about their "sponsorship" deals. Just highlighting that their squad isn't that as big as maybe some think, at least this year.

In the case of Citeh It’s financial doping.

What they win is tainted.

If we want FFP let’s have a proper system that is fully enforced.

Clubs like Citeh PSG Newcastle need to earn success rather than simply buy it.

{Ed025's Note - if you had their spending power tommy im sure this would not be a conversation mate..

Makes it even more annoying that the refs are giving them dodgy decisions and penalties every week. They seriously don’t need the help 😂.

19.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 15:38:58
That drives me nuts LiverpoolFC8, everyone watching the replays in ghe City/ Wolves match could see the ball hit his side, clear as day but ref gives a pen and VAR doesn't intervene.

These sponsorship deals are what they have been in trouble before over but wasn't all the evidence gathered via hacked emails etc and couldn't be used? Related party deals are supposed to be prohibited under FFP but hey, here we are eh - really does annoy me tbh

Though Ed25 is probably right, if it was our club swimming in the money would we be as outraged?

20.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 16:28:39
But whether we had their spending power or not is irrelevant Ed. Its not good for the game for one team to win maybe 8 or 9 leagues in a row as could easily happen with City. I can honestly say that if L'pool had dat spending power, were winning the league every year while their squad just got better and better than everyone elses i would lose interest, to me that's not real football its more like FIFA. i'd rather win obe every 30 years against the odds.

{Ed025's Note - i find that hard to believe JH, if you do think like that mate you would be one of the very few i would suspect mate..

21.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 16:31:10
Ed025, probably true, but the amount of money being spent takes the fun out of the game in my opinion. Look at how boring German football is. If something isn't done, the Premier league will end up being the same. iI know some will disagree with me and I respect those opinions, but I don't think FFP goes far enough. I'm for a hard salary cap and a cap on signing bonuses.

{Ed025's Note - i can see your point stone but i cant see it happening any time soon mate, most of you would be dancing in the street im sure if you had the city money..

22.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 17:00:40
What would be the point Ed, winning it every year? with your owners being able to get their brothers uncle's Airline company to dodgily sponsor you for £50m whenever you fancy buying a backup rightfull? i KNOW i would get a pain in me b&%lls with that and support some local side or something. This kind of dodgy sponsoring would have got them banned only for how the info was attained so its accepted that it goes against the rules. it simply shouldn't be going on and the"if it was your team it'd be alright"thinking is the kind of thinking that allows them to keep doing it.

23.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 17:32:07
If I'm not mistaken, the PL recently held a vote around sponsorship deals in the hope to limit these type of sponsorships (can't remember the exact details) and oddly enough, the only two clubs who opposed it? Newcastle and City!

24.) 08 Jan 2022
08 Jan 2022 19:11:19
25 - it is much more fun fighting against the idea of buying wins like FIFA whilst criticising FSG for not buying wins like FIFA.

08 Jan 2022 17:36:58
Some would for sure Ed as would some from other clubs, but it would become boring and where’s the sport in buying championships every year? Personally, I hate all of the obscene money that’s in professional sports these days. Call me old fashioned but it is frustrating knowing that the champion of the league might as well be crowned before the season even starts. Sure there are one offs every now and then but prior to the season you can pretty much guess who will win most of the leagues around Europe. Follow the money.

Glad the Masdar deal is getting some traction. It’s cheating, plain and simple breach of the FFP rules.

What are the PL doing? It appears nothing. And why? Is it being scared of lawyers or love of brown envelopes?
