Good article Seano_, you've possibly said what we've all been thinking, that the officials aren't fit for purpose! Like Max in the F1, if you're allowed to get away with a poor passing move (turn 4 Brazil) or now, Kane's red card offence, it makes you believe you can do it again! Is that right, as none of us want to see potential leg breakers go unpunished under the present rules and the player believing he can get away with it anytime he likes, especially as he's England captain?

Good article Seano, VAR continues to baffle me as I thought it eould eradicate those wrong calls. Sometimes the ref misses something but VAR is there to assist. Instead it is being used to back up completely baffling calls and the excuses coming out are ridiculous. Apart from Utd and City, I think every team has been on the wrong end of such calls, how long does it continue?

Even MOTD are calling out these incompetent decisions and openly questioning VAR. How long does it continue before the powers that be think 'you know what, we need to fix this'??

A good read that Seano.

Only point I would argue with is the following:

“Right or wrong if the atmosphere is such that a referee can make a decision without torrents of abuse and pressure then they may start to make better, more consistent decisions. ”

You are absolutely correct that referees should be shown far more respect and nobody can argue otherwise. However that being said VAR is currently in a very sterile environment away from those pressures and they still make horrendously bad decisions. There is absolutely no doubt players, managers and fans need to respect refs more but I think the far bigger issue when it comes to the standard of officiating is just the appalling standard of referees that we have to begin with.

Very good one, Seano. I fully agree with the retroactive ban as well regarding Kane's tackle cos back in the day in other leagues, that is the way they do it in such scenarios. However, that can only happen in a place where there is a clear and transparent structure and process of accountability. The PGMOL is nothing but an island onto itself with NO accountability misplaced hubris and arrogance.

In other leagues (cos we all watch them), the ref sees the VAR as a partner, a tool he can use to be a better ref and get the right decision cos as a professional, that should be the goal. In England on the other hand and sadly, the VAR is part of the Good Ol' Boys' Club where they cover for each other's incompetence hence when they see the VAR requesting a ref to check on a decision via the video, as insubordination or questioning the ref's integrity and competence or a slap in the face. This is the contrast we are dealing with and it is killing football in this country.

Regarding respecting refs, how is it possible to respect a ref who lacks respect for the game, the players and the managers? I mean, just look at the way some of them (like Tierny in the Spurs game) walk around with their chests pumped out, looking down on everyone including the managers and acting like they are deified beings that MUST NOT be questioned. The stench of arrogance and hubris coming from some of this lot is sickening at times.

You can smell the arrogance from wherever you are watching the game. And If I can see that from my sofa then you better believe the players and managers see it too. Respect begets respect. It is earned and NOT demanded.
