great result against Porto especially given the fact we played a slightly weaker team.

I am really hoping Konate improves though. At the moment when he plays, we are not solid or secure. He loses the ball in risky positions and also gets caught out of position a bit by not anticipating where the ball will go. It could be that Fabinho was not playing though.

At the moment, I felt safer with Nat Phillips last season. I understand Konate might have a higher ceiling and is quicker, but on current ability I feel Phillips is better at the moment.

Problem with Konate is that he is used to a back 3. Would probably be better as a right back in our system at the moment. I'm sure he'll adapt in time. Robbo, Fabinho and Thiago took time too.

I like Phillips and I think it was a mistake not to move on in the summer whilst his ceiling was high. With regards to is he better than Konate then it’s all about opinions but the professional managers out there most Importantly Klopp seem to believe Konate is the better player.

Only saying this as the evidence shows Konate was a regular in Germany for a top tier team whilst Phillips was on loan a league below at Stuttgart. Phillips really stepped up to the mark last season but at the start of it he was close to moving to the championship. Regardless of what our opinions are the only reason he did play was because of a freak injury situation.

No one seemed to want to take a chance on him in the summer (mental to me as he’s home grown and has proven he can do a job in the premier league) and we can say Klopp wanted him to stay but it’s highly unlikely he’s going to get much game time this season on current analysis.

This isn’t a dig at Phillips because I like the lad but surely he should have moved in the summer for the good of his career. Perhaps the pay rise in the new contract was too good to turn down over first team football.

Of course he should have JK, but people felt we needed 5 or 6 first team centrehalves so what can ye do. Meanwhile poor Nats wasted a year of his career.

JH, or maybe the club priced him out of a move which is something they are prone to do at times.

There was certainly interest in Phillips over last Summer but I’m not sure how concrete it was, and I thought he’d chosen to stay at Liverpool in any case?
He’s on very decent money for a back-up player as well reportedly.

I think the fact van dijk and Gomez were both coming back from long lay offs add to the fact matip has issues with injuries you can’t blame the club for keeping Nat in the end (albeit if someone coughed enough up he’d have gone )

Van dijk could have easily relapsed
Gomez seems to be struggling to get to his levels from what I hear .
Matip is matip so fingers crossed he stays fit
KonAte is adapting to a new style and league on top of having injury issues in the past

So keeping Nat for me was good business for the club not so much for the lad if all above stay fit

I.

What did they ask? £10-15m? Not really a lot for a player a lot on here thought should be ahead of Matip/ Gomez to partner Virgil. The bl9ke was never going to play this season with 4 players ahead of him.

I am growing concerned with Joey- obviously massive talent and I think he is half of our best central defence with VVD - when fit.

It’s the last bit which is the concern - I haven’t got stats or anything but it seems for the last. 2 or 3 seasons he has missed a sizeable chunk of games through injury and he seems to be going along the same path this season.

Like I say, I have genuine concerns that the lad isn’t going to become a regular fist teaser which would really be a shame because he has so much talent.

I’m unsure yet about Konate. It would be unfair to judge a player after what, about 5 games.

As much as professional football players want to play every game. Like 2nd or 3rd choice GKs. There will be a few outfield players like Nat that may prefer to be coached by one of the best in the world. Be involved within a club that’s where we are in the football world. Okay and train each day with players at the level of Salah. Mane. Firmino. Alongside our usual back four. Just saying that Nats a pro. He’s an adult. He made his choice well aware and could e the happiest person ever with his improved contract and maybe living his dream as I’ve guessed over playing regular at a Norwich or Burnley, constantly battling, getting nowhere, among average players day in. Grass is not always greener and I know I’d take five figures a week and be amongst our squad and club, Klopp and watching in prime seats every week.

Fabinho was way worse in his first 10 games than Konate has been in his first 5 games for the club.
Give the lad some time to learn the system, and he will be one of the best CBs in the world in the next 2-3 years.

Regarding Konate

Prime example is Fabhino - I remember the game
against Arsenal when he first joined, had an absolute stinker. Klopp took him out of the limelight for a while…

Fast forward to today, one of our most important players.

Some adapt quicker than others.

Ah yeh, every kids dreams of being a professional footballer so that he can TRAIN with top players every week. I'd imagine the opposite, i'd say he's sick he didn't move on in the summer.

He would have had a long chat with Klopp in the summer and will know where he stands. It was a mutual choice for him to stay, he's at his dream club and is being well paid.
He and big Divvy seem to be the same in that respect, it's only fans that imagine them to be unhappy, or want them moved on.

Konate will come good but at the moment he is a bit of a liability. He comes rushing out of position and he does love a foul. We had to keep Phillips at least until January. Nobody thought Matip could play once a week never mind 3 times. Gomez is injured as many feared and VVD is still regaining full fitness.

Poor old Phillips! I can’t believe posters think that. He is one of the luckiest men alive.

JK, Edwards blocked the move of Nat Philips. he was available all summer and there were interested sides. But the club refused to do business and played over smart. they wanted Harry Maguire kind of money. It backfired and now we have a player on a contract without kicking a ball and no suitors.
Statue for Edwards then.
