Good morning ed002 do you expect Salah to sign a new Liverpool contact? Thanks.

{Ed002's Note - It would be dependent on what offer is made.}

Personally I think if it gets to the Summer, without a new contract it will be tough to tie him down and if he keeps on playing as he does then surely certain other clubs who could possibly pay more in wages might come knocking. They would be mad not to in my opinion, he is at the very top of the tree for me. The one thing we can't do is let his contract run down and he walks on a free. Summer 2022, agree a contract or sell him.

Thing is though Irish, try selling any player at Salah’s age with one year left on his contract for a decent fee. We’ll get relative peanuts for Salah and certainly not enough to buy an adequate replacement of equal quality. I can’t think of any players out there at the prices FSG are willing to spend and the names bandied about that we’re linked to are frankly terrible (Traore, Dembele, Doku. Asensio and most laughably, the overweight permacroc Eden Hazard) as they’re never going to score 10 goals in a league season, let alone the 20 that Salah regularly scores. One way or the other FSG are going to have to bite the bullet, whether that is giving Salah the contract he wants or having to actually spendIng money to adequately replace him, which is going to be incredibly difficult as City, Chelsea, United, Newcastle etc will price us out of the market for the best players.

I know what you mean VVVV but I don’t we would necessarily get peanuts for him in his early 30s. He’s a once in a lifetime player along the lines of Ronaldo, Messi etc. The mugs down the road just spent nearly £20m I believe on a 37 year old Ronaldo.

He’s certainly playing like a man who wants to be paid 500k a week isn’t he. Maybe drag it out a little longer lol.

Salah would be payed over 350k at any other top top club in the world. If Liverpool and FSG don’t want to/ can’t pay the best players the best wages, then we can’t have the best players.

So what do you do if Salah doesn't commit to a new contract? Let him go for free in 12 months? Surely that's worse?

7.) 17 Oct 2021

For what it’s worth Irish, we’re screwed if he doesn’t agree a new contract, as leaving on a free screws us and we’re screwed if we sell him. Age and length remaining on his contract make his potential sale value very low as any enquiring team can just wait a year to get him for free. If he doesn’t sign, the question has to be is he worth more to the team in a last year of his contract than the peanuts we’ll get if we sell him. As £40-50m (and that’s being very generous to think we’d get that much) doesn’t go far and certainly isn’t going to buy a 20 goal a season player in the current market.

Can I ask Ed002, if you know. Are Salah's wage demands beyond what the club would be willing to pay? Do you think the club should go the extra mile to tie him down or are we better to get what we can in the Summer?

{Ed002's Note - I expect that they are. His agent is trying to get leverage by offering him to other clubs. Liverpool need to decide when to cut him lose and get younger players in. The summer makes sense to me.}

He has very few options, Juve are a mess, Barcelona even worse. I doubt Bayern will pay £500k a week. That only leaves PSG and Madrid who I thought were after Mbappe and Harland.

PSG would be a massive step down IMO. Liverpool need to win a major trophy then I think he will stay.

Mark mate I don't think it has to do with trophies, Salah is at a stage of he's career where he will want to milk as much as he can in-terms of finance, he's next contract is going to be he's last big pay check, he will want to get as much as he can here or somewhere else and that's the big problem for FSG.

I think £40/ 50 million is a fair bit under value in my opinion VVVV. Regardless, if he doesn't sign he needs to be sold, which would be mighty unfortunate but we can't afford to let players leave on a free, especially top class players.

12.) 17 Oct 2021
17 Oct 2021 17:06:14
I understand that but what would another £5m in the bank get him? If Liverpool pay him £350k a week and on top he makes more than that from his commercial deals and social media. He doesn’t need the money it won’t change his life, he already has many many millions, surely now it’s about winning trophies.

Are you thinking Barcelona for example is a better option, absolutely no chance to win anything in the next 3 years or stay at Liverpool and have the chance to win Premier leagues and campions league. Make the switch for another £100k a week.

Blame FSG for signing him in the first place, it's all their fault!
I never thought I'd see doom and gloom over having the best player in the world wearing a Liverpool shirt, but there you go.
The glass is half empty for some, and that half is bitter p*ss.

Mark you're speaking as a fan, think abt Salah who has been pushing and pushing he's agent around the globe when LFC were winning stuff why wld that change when he's approaching @3O

No money is too much for Rich hence Rich gets Richer poor gets poorer

He can easily continue winning trophies with PSG and easily become their poster boy with middle-East connection and earn lots of cash in the process.

Salah atm is in a driving Seat, he knows he can get what he wants here or Somewhere else which again makes it difficult for FSG.

When you’re at the top end of any business you get what you pay for. And when you have the cream of the crop if you don’t them what they are worth then a rival will. I really hope we pay Salah what he’s worth. If we don’t then he will either be sold or we lose him on a free. That’s not an opinion it’s just facts.

That is of course true Jk, I really hope we can get him to sign. Kopforever you make valid points, I live in hope. Winning the French league won’t mean a lot.

17 Oct 2021 21:07:19
@Markp, I think you actually meant ….

Anybody winning the French League won’t mean a lot to you.

I’d say that’s probably not a point of view shared by (literally) millions of others.

17 Oct 2021 21:29:39
Yes mark mate not going to dispute abt french league but it's not like Messi and Neymar in he's prime refused going there, don't think Salah has problem going there either after Ed2 confirmed last year he's agent was pushing for PSG move.

Think very soon Guardiola after city or Zidane will be their new manager.

Salah’s agent has been offering him around to other clubs most seasons - Correct ed002? The club will be aware of this surely,

Ferguson always sold his top players in their prime and then built, tough pill to swallow but is this the way forward?

{Ed002's Note - Yes, the club will know that. They need to decide to take on a huge financial burden or to look at selling and starting the rebuild. It is a tough decision.}

{Ed002's Note - Yes, the club will understand. He will look to having an offer from elsewhere and use that as leverage. The problem he faces is that Salah will never get to be the poster boy at Real Madrid which is what he has wanted. He may have got it but they were laughed out of Madrid with the wage demands. Liverpool need to decide to give him a new contract (which is a huge financial undertaking for a 30 year old and would disrupt a rebuild) or to bite the bullet in the summer and let him leave and get funds to work on a rebuild. These are tough questions but the club must know that they need dealing with. The squad is aging.}

Difficult to know what the right answer is - short term a new contract might be best but for the long term a rebuild is a must and if Salah has to leave to enable it then so be it. Recruitment and a suitable replacement will be crucial - out of interest ed002 what player do you think Liverpool should look at as a Salah replacement?

{Ed002's Note - the coach remains keen on players I would likely avoid. But he is likely a better coach than I am.}

22.) 18 Oct 2021
18 Oct 2021 13:37:44
Ed002, by the same token, being a great coach doesn’t necessarily make one a great spotter of players to bring in, given that Klopp didn’t want Salah at all (I understand that Dave Fallows and Michael Edwards had to convince Klopp? ), as he was dead set on Julian Brandt, so I’d be inclined to not agree those players Klopp has the Kliperties for should probably be avoided.

I think it’s fair to say that the only players capable of replicating what Salah does are well outside of our reach and I fear that selling Salah will trigger a slump and a decline as he’s so pivotal to our game and he’s simply not easy to replace (unlike Pipco who we could afford to cut loose) .

To anyone saying we should sell Salah, I’d ask one question, who would you realistically bring in who can do exactly what he does (and by realistically, I mean don’t mention Mbappe, Haaland, Isak etc as they’re financially out of our reach even if we sell Salah) . Selling Salah to fund a rebuild isn’t going to work well as we don’t hold any cards in negotiations.

World class he may be, but his age and remaining contract length will see to it that the fee doesn’t reflect that status, the reason I can’t logically see us getting a huge fee as any buying club will simply say “but we can wait a year and get him for free” at any attempt to try and play hardball.

The best option remains placating him and paying him close to what he wants, as the other options are unpalatable.
