I'd like to try and establish who, out of all the users of this forum, goes back furthest. i. e. who has the earliest memory of LFC, as in something they actually remember happening at the time, rather than something they've seen recordings of since. I'm assuming we'll definitely have people with memories from the sixties. What about the 50s? What is your earliest LFC memory? And, I guess it might be the same person, but who goes back furthest in terms of actually being inside Anfield for a match? We'll have some from the Shankley era, I'm sure. Anybody earlier than that?

For me, my earliest Liverpool memory is 1985 (the 84/ 85 season), so it won't be me who goes back furthers, but genuinely interested in hearing memories from people who go back to earlier decades.

1984 European cup final, watching it on TV. I was 8, my surname is Rush, it was a no brainer really.

1st liverpool memory was of my mum throwing a red rose up to Kevin Keegan on the open top bus parade after the 74 Cup final, nobody knew it would be Shanks last game.

Earliest memory is from when I was 6 and watching highlights of the 1976 UEFA Cup final with my dad. He took me to my first match - the 7 nil hammering of Spurs in 1978 when they had Ardilles and Villa nd Glenn Hoddle in their side.

Getting my first Liverpool shirt when I was about 6 is the earliest memory. The clearest memory I have of a game was probably the 1996 FA Cup final against United. I was 9 years old and living in South Africa at the time (lots of United fans there! ) . I remember it clearly because Cantona scored a late winner and my older brother was crying!

1971 FA Cup final. Losing to Charlie George goal.
Supported us ever since. It was watching us on Sportsnight, with my Mom, on European nights which really got me hooked. We were both in awe of the Kop. I started going a few years after, when I was old enough, and have been going ever since.

1968 verses West Ham at Anfield. Don’t know how dad did it but met Shanks, looked in physio room, met Roy Evans (brilliant guy) etc. 2:0 win. Emlyn and Peter Thompson scored. I was smitten. 😁.

I had started following the club around 1973, through magazines I would regularly be buying and whatever games that were televised on those black and white screens (I have always lived abroad, never in England) . But my earliest clear memory is the European Cup final between and LFC and Moenchengladbach. It's the game that started off my lifelong support of LFC.

I remember watching Liverpool vs Man City in the league cup in October 1995, it was a Wednesday night and I was 11 years old. We beat them 4-0, I remember Folwer and Rush scoring and I’m sure Scales had one but I can’t remember the last scorer! Funny thing was, the following morning we managed to get some tickets for the game that was on the Saturday and it was vs Man City at home again! This time we won 6-0! Rush had 2, Folwer had 2 and if my memory is right, I’m sure Redknapp had one as did Razor Ruddock :)!
Moral of the story is, I’d been a Liverpool supporter for a couple of years prior to going to a game, so my first two games to experience we bagged 10 goals and it was at that moment I fell in love with Anfield!

My earliest recollection of being at Anfield was watching us play Ajax in the second leg of the European Cup in 1966 after losing the first leg 5-1 in Amsterdam.
I'm aware that the away leg was played on a foggy night but my memory is that it was also foggy at Anfield where we drew 2-2.

Got smuggled in for Ron Yeats testimonial 'against Celtic in 1974. Don't remember a thing about the game other than we lost and it wasn't a friendly.

My first game was a European Fairs cup tie in October 1970 against Dinamo Bucharest which was 0-0 after an hour. An elderly Ian St John then came on as sub and it finished 3-0 to the reds. He had fantastic game intelligence as they say these days.

Had moved to Edmonton in early 1963 with my family as my Dad had a job in London and we were staying with relatives (all Spurs fans) . They all went to watch Spurs on a regular basis and I was fortunate to arrive in time for them to take me to Spurs v Liverpool at White Hart Lane as a treat.
We were stood at pitch level and, in the first half the ball bounced toward my family memebers. My Uncle caught it gave it to me to throw back onto the pitch, but before I could Ian Callaghan came over and I handed it to him. He smiled and said "Tanks lad".
So at that moment, at the age of 8, I was Liverpool and Ian Callaghan remains my all time favourite player to this day.
We won 3-1 and Sir Roger scored a hat trick.
The quintessential perfect day.

1957 or 58. My mate's uncle was the club secretary so we got in free. I don't remember how we got over from Heswall, I assume with his parents as they had an opticians in Exchange station.

Joining the 'oldies' group, my first memory was watching Hysel unfold on the TV with my Dad when I was 9.

My first live match would have been at Upton Park watching Liverpool/ West Ham in the 1990s as the rest of my family are West Ham fans.

First pilgrimage to Anfield was actually for an England match soon after Wembley closed, and then I attended around 10-15 matches over the next couple of seasons in the early 2000s.

Not too old this one but I remember listening to the Liverpool 4:3 Newcastle (1996) game on the radio at home. I was only 8 but I can remember shouting Collymore!

What a great idea for discussion.

Wirrlean is winning so far, well when I mean "winning" I mean he's winning the Oldest Swinger in Town badge 👍👍.

In all seriousness tho, great to see that this forum isn't just for the young guns 😜.

{Ed025's Note - us senior members are the lifeblood of this site irish, all the young guns think they invented football and sex, they were around before 1990 you know mate.. :)

I will add that if Ed25 had any sense and was a Liverpool fan then he would win the Oldest Swinger in Town by a country mile. Relic is the word I've heard Ed001 use 😄.

{Ed025's Note - but he is ageist irish, im 63 years young and still very attractive to the ladies of liverpool mate.. :)

1974 FA cup final aged 9,back in the day when you'd watch the build up from about 11 o'clock (omg it's the bus, it's the bus! ) .
Was a Leeds United supporter till that day, don't think my dad ever forgave me.

The title decider in 89 against arsenal was the first game i saw. Started supporting liverpool because they got beat. didn't know anything about football. Never had an older brother and my dad wasnt into football. Needless to say my dad younger brother have been massive liverpool fans since. The memories i have of celebrating the special moments in certain games with them will never be forgotten. Thank you mr barnes for not taking it to the corner flag. I might be supporting arsenal!

Not my first game but first one I remember. Getting woken up early by my dad who lashed a scarf at me and grunted "15 minutes then we leave" jumped up, necked my corner flakes, blag brush of the teeth then out to see my dad's mates clapped out removal van cramped with 8 blokes, 2 other kids and enough cans and bottles to last 10 family Xmas parties. Down to Vicarage Road to see Walshie and I think Rush earn a good victory from a very good Watford team. The way back John Barnes was the talk of the van with the common opinion being he's not all he's cracked up to be. How wrong they were.

Excellent thread. 1981 European cup final I was 8. First game at Anfield I think 1988 we drew Brighton 2-2 and beat them in the reply. Kop was closed one hour before kick off as you could queue to get in.

{Ed0666's Note - I thought I was the only relic who could remember watching the 1981 European cup final…glad you’re a fossil too Mark

As an addendum I believe my mate's uncle (club secretary) committed suicide in one of the turnstiles soon after the club's first FA cup win. Was he followed by Peter Robinson?

Also my wife's father provided the boot room with the booze - in exchange for tickets.

I also got to meet several players, particularly Craig Johnson (who had the registration ROO 2 on MarkII Cortina) and Nicky Tanner who was the nicest lad you could meet.

First Liverpool memory was beating Palace 9-0 at anfield in 1989. 8 different scorers with Nicol scoring the first and last.
Ridiculous football on display in that game particularly from Barnes and Beardsley.

1974 FA Cup Final v Newcastle. Malcolm McDonald was going to do all sorts of damage to Liverpool, and he barely got a kick. I was only 9 and loved listening to Shanks. I'd grown up in the midst of various Scottish accents, I supposed it was inevitable he would have a big impact on me.

Good thread. Earliest memory is paying a fiver on the gate at half time to get into the Kop. Would have been about 1987. Didn’t see anything of the games as was too small but would lift my feet up and get carried around in the mass when we scored. Then was in the main stand for the league defeat to Arsenal in 1989. I was also there for the last match before the Kop got seated. We lost to Leeds and chanted ‘you’re supposed to let us win’. We stayed behind for an hour after the game singing all the songs and I even started one myself. Good times.

Some golden oldies on this site. But don't forget the oldest of them all, Ed002, who is actually the cousin of the first ever caveman on Earth.

Stoneage I think the last kop standing game was against Norwich with Jeremy Goss scoring. I didn't get into the game but got in after it as there was an unauthorised stay behind for a bit of a sing song and then went to the authorised event the next day for one last sing on the old kop.

Norwich! Yep, you’re right. We really should have won that! I was mixing it up with the time Viduka scored 4 against us which I was also at.

The sing song was cool tho. Didn’t know they did another the next day. Thanks for the update :)

What a great response, and such a wide range. Quite a few children of the 80s here I think but also a few younger folks with earliest memories in the 90s. Some from the 70s, a couple from the 60s and one even going back as far as the late 50s. Excellent.

First few years on this planet i used to sit watching me Grandad who was deaf in one ear he was an AA gunner during WW2 listening to the radio with an single headphone in his good ear and every now and again he would frighten the living daylights out of everyone because St John or Sir Roger had just scored needless to say it was obvious i was going to be a red, first game I went to well we never had much money as kids but it might of been Coventry City at home or Forrest, I was in awe, still get goosebumps thinking about me Grandad to this day, and every time I smell fried onions I think of the hamburger stand outside the Kop on matchday.
