Anyone reckon Jones could play the 9 role?

Probably not as good a finisher as Jota but when it comes to coming deeper, winning the ball, bringing Mane/ Salah into the game I feel like he could do a job.

More like a Firmino in that position than a striker like Jota.

Not for me, but maybe later in his career. Jones just needs to get back in the team and play the best he can. The left midfield role is up for grabs.

Was just thinking about it when he came on Saturday.

I'm a big fan and just want to see the fella play!

I think he could be but obviously he'd need time in that position, time he's not going to get at the moment. A few years down the line? Sure why not but not yet.

I'm not sure about him playing as a 9 but i do think his best position is playing on the left of a front 3 or a 3 behind a striker. He isn't rapid like Mane, but he could play that role in a way similar to how players like Mount and Grealish do it.

I still think he's got a big future at Liverpool. Different players develop at different rates and i think many people are just upset that he's not kicked on to the same extent as Foden, Greenwood and Saka who all burst onto the scene at a similar time as him. Jones will have his time in the Sun 🤞🏻.

Foden literally spent 2 years in the reserves playing occasional cup games as well Adam, something which is very common for managers handling young players. I remember when Sterling broke through under Rodgers he barely got a game for like 6 months afterwards too. Young players spend periods out of the team but, in the toxic, hyperbolic court of public opinion that football operates in nowadays, everything must mean something and Curtis Jones missing a few games at the start of the season due to fitness and a possible concussion, it must mean he isn’t good enough and needs to be sent out on loan to Villa immediately. People tend to apply historical revisionism to suit their own agendas, and pretend as if every great player was playing at the same level that Messi was in their teens and early 20’s. Gerrard, Xavi, Lampard, they all only really started to do the business in their mid 20’s. Some people just don’t have the patience or pride in their clubs identity to give young players time and encouragement to improve, such is the modern football fan.

Gerrard was our best player at 21 and was made captain not long after. What are you talking about? Don’t make things up. It’s all up to Jones he will get games it’s up to him how he performs. But for whatever reason going back to last season and preseason he has definitely fallen down the pecking order to probably 7th or 8th choice.

Mark, how has Jones fallen down the pecking order when he didn’t even complete a full season cos he got concussed? Also, saying he has fallen down to 7th or 8th is just hyperbole that doesn’t deserve my time.

Sure, he could be behind in his preparation and the others who were ahead of him now, are just there due to them NOT being injured like him. Jones is a legit baller cos even rival fans online rave about him and the good season he had last year.

I base my judgement of Jones in what he has actually produced on the pitch last season where he performed admirably in a team in tatters. Can’t say that for Foden, can we?

The kid will be fine with time and I’m sure he is ready for the competition for places, IMO. The slander he gets from fans is just strange and bizarre cos there’s no basis for it whatsoever.

He hasn’t really produced anything on the pitch yet he has hardly played. You have massive red tinted specs Oli.
I like Jones but as I keep saying something wasn’t right and there were even rumours he would be sold. If you are right Oli now Elliot and Thiago are injured Jones will be starting in midfield. But I bet you it will be Keita.

Gerrard may have been a very good young player (as is Curtis) but he was given the captaincy at 23 and only started consistently banging in 10 or more goals a season from the age of 24 onwards. So yeah when i say he only really started doing the business from his mid-20’s, the Steven Gerrard we all remember, that is what i mean. We’ll never know how Curtis may compare to Gerrard at that age because our team is so much better now than it was then, so there is no need to throw him in the team every week, although that would be much better for his development.

I’m not sure which bit of that you could take issue with, yet here you are saying that you know for a fact that Jones has fallen down the pecking order, purely based on the last few games of a crazy topsy turvy season and pre-season games?! Not only did Jones actually play in the majority of the pre-season games, but using team selection in sodding friendlies to make a point about who is in favour is like me thinking i’m in with a girl because she said hello to me. It means nothing. Yet apparently i’m the one making things up.

Jones is a young lad and young lads spend periods in and out of the team. He’s looked good when he’s come off the bench this season and with Thiago and Elliott injured he has a couple of games to impress. Why people have suddenly turned on him and are positively rabid to see him fail, i just don’t know.

It’s not based at all on this season. Because that would be ridiculous, but the rumour wasn’t just made up that he might be sold. Just because he is 7th choice now he will still get game time and he can force himself up the pecking order. The left midfield spot is up for grabs.

As you say he is a young player and he can have a great season, it’s all upto him.

Last season was a tough year for any young player to break through into our team.

Think jones best position is left of the midfield 3. He is progressive and direct when on the ball. Has good dribbling and vision. He would currently work best with a combo of henderson and fabinho.

If he gets 10 to 15 starts in the premier league this season with strong starting 11's and in his prefered midfield role i think he can show his true qualities.

His pressing at the right times has already started to improve. If he can learn the defensive awareness side of the game from henderson he could develop into a very good all round midfielder.

I think he could develop into the player we thought we were getting when we bought keita.

If he reaches his ceiling him and elliot could be a very exciting midfield in 5 years with an excellent dm to slot in when fabinho calls it a day.

For the first time in quite a number of years we have some very exciting youth prospects. Gordon looks very promising and looks nailed on to step up in the coming years. If we could get one or two more to break through it could save a penny or two. Our academy seems to be moving in the right direction. Long way to go but it definately seems to be in a better place than it has been in a very long time.

Give it 2 or 3 years, Jurgen’s swan song and Jones, Elliot and Gordon playing across the park, all being well, aged 23, 20 and 19 …. Can’t wait to watch (and how much did they cost? )

really acered? I felt like when Jones came on he was full throttle trying to get forward and make the most of the minutes he had!

{Ed001's Note - I am with you on that Faith, he always plays that way, Jones wants to get attacks going as quickly as possible.}

Rubbish, Mark. So cos I disagree with you I now have rose tinted glasses? Maybe Jones has not produced anything on the pitch yet cos he has hardly played due to injury. That is fact and nothing red tinted about it. Therefore, we judge him based on what he has done last season BUT that does not suit your narrative, does it?
Per Ed02, Villa were never getting Jones cos the club were never going to sell Jones even tho, Villa were interested.

The fact that you used friendlies where team selections are irrelevant cos they are based on putting certain tactics in place to support your point, tells me how slanted your view on this kid is. Memo to you: Friendlies mean sweet nothing.

Something is not right with Jones. Yeah, the same way Gary Neville said something is not right with Liverpool? Yeah, give it a rest, bro. You are one of the people who have turned on him cos you have seen a new toy in Elliott (who is less experienced than Jones BUT who cares, right? ), same way you turned on Bobbie and Thiago. Jones is quality and he is a key member of the squad and no amount of your bellyaching will change that.
