Old skool reminder:
1. Quality article in The Echo yesterday on Steve McMahon. He never seems to get mentioned on here but he was a fantastic player for Liverpool. If he were around now, he'd go straight into the starting XI for me.
2. Ahead of this weekend's game, I watched highlights of Leeds 1-2 Liverpool from Autumn 1972 last night. That Leeds team was something else, a Mick Jones overhead capped off a dominant Leeds start and had the home crowd chanting 'what's it like to be outclassed Liverpool'.
A good turn around on half time and second half brought Liverpool a very rare win at Elland Road, in which Ian Callaghan and Emlyn Hughes stood out. Recommended viewing. 💪.

{Ed001's Note - McMahon's problem was that he wasn't as good as Souness, Case etc that came before him and then Gerrard who came after him, so he gets forgotten.}

Correct Ed, also the Wimbledon FA cup final, he got accused of bottling it!, Think it had something to do with Vinny Jones assault early on. Bit unfair as the whole team weren't great that day.

{Ed001's Note - that's not true to say that, as Jones himself said (and he was left with scars for life after McMahon got him back later in the game) McMahon never bottled it. Wimbledon just went out there and got the win. They were capable of it at their best and we were not at our best. It happens, certainly not McMahon's fault that 11 players were not at it against a team that played out of their skins. We should be applauding the Wimbledon team for being good enough to take advantage and win.}

Absolutely nailed that Ed.

Always liked McMahon, never left anything on the pitch, yeah he wasn’t as good as Souness but very few are (he was the best centre midfielder ever imho) . McMahon was excellent and that midfield unit were as good as any of the ones I’ve seen.

{Ed001's Note - I always liked him too, if he had played for just about any other team in the league he would be one of their all-time greats. Sadly for him, he played for us.}

I actually like him as a commentator too. Very dry way of speaking, straight to the point, and no sign of mental "fogginess" like some of the others.

What was the reason for him leaving Ed if you know? think he left not long after Souness came in.

{Ed001's Note - I can't remember now to be honest.}

Red Duck, there’s a really good piece on YouTube from a live Radio City interview.
McMahon described Souness’ arrival as being like night and day compared to what had gone before.
It shocked all the players, especially the older pros, and McMahon was not happy.
He asked Souness for a transfer, in the belief that it would trigger a heart-to-heart discussion, and compromise. But Souness just said ‘ok, no problem’.
McMahon was surprised, to say the least, but felt he had to go through with his ultimatum.
Sourness, for his part, later said he regretted doing that but he couldn’t believe that any player would not want to play for Liverpool and so got rid.
Neither wanted McMahon to actually go but that’s what happened.
Jaw jaw not war war!

Nice one Juicer-could have done with keeping hold of him during that time as well!
