Something I don’t get is if we rely so heavily on player sales why have we allowed players to leave for free (Moreno, Lallana, Wijnaldum) rather than getting something for them a year before, or not move them on for a good price before they start to decline and lose value (expected Firmino to leave summer gone can’t see us getting much next summer)

Easier said than done.

Because these players offer more to the club playing one more season and leaving on a free than they would leaving a season earlier for a relatively small sum.

Spot on Thunderbird, especially if that player is an integral part of the system and is used to their team mates.

Prime recent example is Mbappe - used to his teammates and PSG see this season as a realistic chance for them to win the CL, having added Ramos (spit), Messi, Donnarumma and Gini.

Moreno I can't comment on, other than he was an attacking LB and Klopp liked him and wanted to see what he could do. Effectively replaced by Robbo already and he was probably worth more as cover than any fees we could receive for him a year earlier.

Gini - I genuinely think Klopp hoped a deal could be done. Also, with us having just won the league, defending the title would've further cemented Klopp's legacy and keeping our most reliable CM would have been part of that plan (losing all our CBs clearly wasn't! ) .

I'm sure we tried to sell Lallana the year before he left, when Klopp had a settled midfield of Hendo, Fab and Gini with Milly as an able deputy (amongst others! ) but there was probably a price below which he was worth more to us to keep (as a sub, injury cover etc) than sell.

each to their own really. Dortmund have had plenty of their good players leave for free too as have other clubs. I like that we just don't always treat the players like commodities.
