stepping away from transfers for awhile. have always been curious, what happened to Scottish football?

Celtic was the 1st British club to win the european cup. The spine of the great 80s liverpool team was a trio of scots. Shanks was scot. king kenny was scot. and i recall they used to qualify for the EC and WC in the 80s.

So what happened that not many are playing for the big clubs anymore?

The same thing that has happened to all the other smaller European leagues. Money becomes concentrated elsewhere, power positions become entrenched, the disparity between leagues grows and their players go to play in more lucrative leagues. Those who remain never develop their talent to the fullest as they don’t play in a high quality league anymore. Sad state of affairs really, you can’t get teams like Red Star or Malmo reaching the Champions League final anymore.

read an article recently which was trying to make the point that the standard of scottish football dropping was due to Celtic dominating the league for so long. With Ranger re-emerging and some of the other teams starting to emerge, he reckoned it was a positive sign for scotland.
