How did we finish 3rd after that horrendous season?

In fairness the season wasn’t the worst I can think of. But it’s definitely proof that Klopp is the best man for the job.

Van Dijk (33 games missed)
Gomez (31 games missed)
Matip (28 games missed)
Keita (28 games missed)
Jota (19 games missed)
Henderson (17 games missed)
Thiago (14 games missed)
Fabinho (8 games missed)

And yet here we are back in the champions league.

Because no matter why Sky Sports say, the Premier League is not the best league in the world. As you say hsf, how could we still be the 3rd best team in the country given our New Year form.

To lose, at home, to very poor teams like Fulham, Burnley, Everton etc you could argue that we didn't deserve to qualify. But that old saying, the table doesn't lie, has to apply here too. We got the points on the board.

What you can say for definite is that the 3/ 4 teams behind us are clearly very poor. Suits me tho! Chuffed to bits we made it into Top 3! On to next season!

Great result for us under the circumstances. Must admit I didn't envisage it even a few weeks ago! Onwards and upwards and hopefully next season can be a more enjoyable one!

It wasn’t a horrendous season. It was a horrendous 6 straight losses at anfield. We were top of the table until around xmas and have won 8 and drawn 2 of our last 10 games.

I know it’s not as simple as this, but had we won 4 or 5 of those lost games at anfield, we’d of been within 3-6 points of city.

We were top of the league at Christmas, had a rough 2 months but finished strongly, we finish where we deserve to finish. The team below us are in the Champions League final, there’s not a stronger league in the world right now.

{Ed0666's Note - I still think if we had VVD and one of Matip or Gomez we’d have won the league

{Ed0666's Note - does macko realize theres was a universal pandemic?

I don't think there has been a stronger league for a long time than the Premier League.

Macko - we had that form in the NY but ended the season with 9 losses.

Dortmund in Germany, 3rd with 10 losses (and only 34 games)
Atalanta in Italy, 3rd with 6
Barcelona for Spain, 3rd with 7
Monaco in France, 3rd with 8

If you're going to make up a point at least glance around the world to see if it holds up first, most leagues have similar numbers of losses for 3rd spot to us.

I honestly think it's more than just the injuries though. I believe that the players were both mentally and physically drained, as we'd quite literally been playing at 110% capacity for 2 entire seasons, just to keep up with and over take City.
The injuries are probably because of sheer energy that our players expended over those two seasons too.

My hope is that next season we will have a much fitter squad, with some additions that will help towards negating this seasons issues in future.
