It's a chess game and this is only the first public move. Long way to go still, with this particular game, the other proposals from other parties, the reactions from Fifa and Uefa, the reactions from non-included clubs, etc., etc. Ed002 has alluded to all this (in his own way) for well over two years now.

I'm very curious about one thing. Why the public announcement now? The timing seems off, given the current environment with empty stadiums, tight finances and all the rest. Were they seriously planning on starting in August, so they've hurriedly surged ahead? This has "massive PR disaster and implosion" written all over it. Something that changes the foundations of a sport to such an extent, in an entire continent (Europe), was never going to happen over a mere couple of months. My turn to ask "what're you guys smoking up there at FSG headquarters" in Boston? 🤨.

Would it be something to do with Champions league reforms that are due to be announced? Strike first type thing?

A few things to consider (I am making all of this up. )
1) There are the Euros coming up this year and may be too late to postpone / change the rules about players participating. Maybe this announcement is supposed to rush UEFA / FIFA into some kind of decision to allow those players to participate in the Euros?
2) While we say FSG out etc. the truth is that some of the other largest clubs in European football would have signed up with or without Liverpool. I know it is the easier path to take and all, but if there is a super league with all the European powers, would you rather be in it or out of it?

{Ed002's Note - (1) No. (2) FSG want control and money.}

Think it's coz of pendemic and 2024 Champions league proposals which have force them to publicly rebuff it tho.

Follow on question for Ed002, if I may. I know very well you hate the "gut" and "instinct" type of questions and you usually refuse to answer, but I thought this is a big enough issue that you may choose to answer. My question is that will one of these "breakaway league" schemes (this one or others on the table) come through and be adopted, or do you foresee FIFA and UEFA bending and coming up with some kind of compromise? I guess what I'm asking is that do you think that these proposed massive changes to European football (as we know it) will come about in some shape or form? It would be so incredulous (from a supporter's point of view) if this is all a "shakedown" to get better financial terms, and the teams involved would have a lot to answer to their supporters.

{Ed002's Note - There needs to be some level of compromise reached to avoid stepping outside of the affiliation with FIFA and UEFA. I have always made it clear something will happen at some point.}

This is the thing Ed. You’ve almost consistently told us this day was coming, so we shouldn’t be at all shocked or surprised that it has come round.
