I've got to say that after last nights game i think i was wrong on 2 counts.

Firstly i criticised interest in Bissouma earlier in the year and gave his lack of goals as my reasoning. But across the 2 legs against Madrid they were able to keep possession through Modric and Kroos for multiple 5-10 minute spells without even breaking sweat. The likes of Wijnaldum and Keita are just passengers at the highest level. Milner at 35 put more pressure on Madrid than either managed combined. If Bissouma can help in terms of regaining and retaining possession that can only be a positive. Henderson and Milner aren't getting any younger.

Secondly, I owe Phillips an apology. After the last leg I made the statement that he had been shown to be lacking the ability to compete against Champions League opposition or play in an expansive system when under pressure. Well last night Phillips looked like prime Joel Matip striding forward if they stood off him and fizzing passes in the the feet with clever reverse passes when they pressed him. He was easily man of the match for me, even though Vinicius did him once for pace. Kabak on the other hand was kicking the ball straight to them whenever he tried anything adventurous and was all over the place when they hit us on the break. For me this showed Phillips has the greater capacity to learn from his mistakes and adapt to playing at a higher level. I wrongly assumed that Kabak's age alone meant he had more potential to develop, but in hindsight players like Vardy are proof that if you have enough desire and a willingness to learn, age is just a number. Well done Nat 👏.

Well said Scouser, Phillips has never let the side or himself down he isn't a world beater but he gives everything which is a top quality.
Milner is an example to the whole club on how to look after yourself and have that drive to take a team forward, again not the highest quality but he gives his all. and the tackle in the first few minutes set a tone that we were giving it a go.
it wasnt a coincidence that when Millie went off last night the drive dropped
all in all we did well last night apart from the finishing. it was the first leg we let ourselves down.
lets go again.

Phillips certainly rose to the occasion didn’t he, he gets better and better each time he plays, I noticed his passing to be really progressive and accurate as well, plus you could see him really trying hard to hold himself back and wanting to charge forward and get stuck in, that desire to do something and win is something that’s been lacking from a few this year.
He was my man of the match as well.
I think a few players did themselves proud last night, if we had showed that level of drive in both legs we would have been in the semis.

I like Bissouma. Technically excellent and the closest to Kante I have seen in the league. but he alone won't do it for me. He would be just one of the two midfielders I would sign in the summer. We need someone like Bruno on our side. Rodrigo De Paul from Udinese is the other midfielder I would sign. He is a serious talent and has an eye for a goal. all four of Wiji, Milner, OX, and Keita can find new homes to facilitate these two signings.

If we got Bissouma (or equivalent) does Bobby provide that spark in midfield (with his no 9 role being replaced too)?

Or isn't Jones that player in midfield who provides the spark.?

Firmino can't pass 5 yards, he has been awful for going on 2 seasons, plays a goalscorers position and can't score, along with Gini it'll be of benefit to move on, that midfield last night lacked a goal threat, we have a very boring and predictable midfield now and need a new way of playing which our current midfield doesn't have, Ox needs more game time now and so does Jones, Gini should be out the side now as he is gone end of season. Firmino needs to follow.

His injuries are a worry and I think that's why we will see him leave, but I would like to see ox get some minutes towards the end of this season. I saw some signs when he came on of the old ox, seemed to have the ball controlled at his feet and he pace looked up again, so would be interested to see if he can produce that in a couple of starts.

Doctor Strange, of the 14,000,605 possible outcomes next season, how many do we win the league?

Bobby lacks serious pace and tenacity and he is not getting any younger either. As for jones, he should be playing ahead of Milner and Wijnaldum by now.

I agree with Zeddicus, i think Thiago, Jones and Bobby moving further back should facilitate our creativity, we are a very creative side still we just need better forwards to make the most of that. A number 9 is far more important than a number 10, particularly for how we play.
