Call me stupidly optimistic but I have a feeling big virgil will suprise everyone with a quicker than expected rehabilitation after his surgery. Fingers toes and sperms crossed lol.

{Ed025's Note - i dont want to dash your hopes scarface but its not just about the leg healing, its about then getting fit and then match fit mate, i think it will be a long haul befor he is back and firing on all cylinders im afraid..

Ed025 not to mention psychological as well mate. It’s a big injury to come back from physically and mentally. VVD needs to be 100% right in both and if that means waiting until 21/ 22 season then so be it.

{Ed025's Note - very much so JK, i forgot to mention that mate but your right as making challenges and going for 50/50 balls will certainly play on his mind..

Ed001 would it be possible mate to do an article on injures. Something along the lines of top players who came back better or were never the same again. Personally I think it would be a very good read and good to research. Off the top of my head Van Nistlerooy comes to mind about coming back from a major knee injury and going on to become twice the player.

{Ed001's Note - I have added that to my list for you. I agree will be an interesting topic to research.}

Don't you mean he will be worried about flying leg locks ed whilst he challenging for the ball 😪.

{Ed025's Note - very witty hailstones, but you have to be made of more than jelly to survive in the prem mate.. :)

Ooh definitely lads, that will be interesting. The game (sadly) is full of players who became shadows of their former self after injury. But the other way round? Can't think of many of the top of my head.

Probably the best cb we've had in the modern era is sami hypia (next to vvd) . I was going to ask if he ever had a serious injury while with us. Sami henchoz and Reina were unbelievable together.

Peps cleansheet record at liverpool was phenomenal. And a lot of that was down to hypia and hoencoz with cara also doing a fantatsic job. Of course his ability to shot stops certainly helped. His clean sheet recond while at liverpool was unbelievable. I think over half his appearances were cleensheets.

Rafa system was of course instrumental and then signing masch.

I might be misremembering but when did Hyypia, Henchoz and Reina ever play together?

I may be wrong, I'm getting old, but Henchoz left in 2005, the year Reina joined. If I remember correct, Westerweld was the keeper when Sami and Henchoz played together.

The 2005/ 06 season was when we kept the best clean sheet record in our history I believe. 11 games or around there. Sao Paulo ruined it by beating us in the club world cup 1-0.

The defence when everyone was fit was Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia and Riise I believe. Henchoz was no longer with Liverpool. I think he was even sold before the 04/ 05 season as he was 100% not a part of any of our UCL games that winning season.

We've all had first hand views of how difficult it is to fully recover from these types of injuries, in recent years. It takes a year usually to recover, and sometimes more. Sturridge, Ings, Gomez, and Ox come to mind. Too early still to say if being injured altered Ox's game, but it definitely derailed Sturridge's. Ings and Gomez seem to be over them.

Danny Ings comes to mind.

OP, I think in addition to all the physical pitfalls involved with this type of injury and rehabilitation, the mental and psychological recovery is even more tedious and difficult, IMO.

The fear factor is the biggest test and the most difficult to overcome. Some players never really do. Remember: Your mind can take over your body.

I think he'll be just fine but if he isn't we move on, we are past the days of relying on one player. I wish his recovery the very best of luck but anything can happen with these injuries. Expect the worst hope for the best, good luck to him. Fingers crossed he comes back strong and on form.
