I think the Maguire incident was more of a subjective decision, whereas the Fab one was technical, but sadly both were wrong. Great write up as usual Ed.

{Ed001's Note - cheers Keith but I can't agree that Maguire was subjective! That was blatantly a foul, they didn't look at it but they did spend twenty minutes poring over a slight brush on Rashford in the box in the hope they could find a reason to give United yet another pen....}

Surely if the ref saw Maguire's arm lock it would been given as a penalty, so this is a perfect example of what VAR should be used for - to correct a clear and obvious error, in this case something not seen by the ref but clearly visible to the VAR team.

{Ed001's Note - exactly.}

Spot on, Ed01. It is beginning to look like the VAR on the day picks and chooses which incident he wants to look at based on the team. It happened in the derby. The VAR "forgot" the rule regarding the Pickford incident BUT was working overtime on redrawing the lines to make sure Mane was offside and STILL failed at that. Same with the Maguire incident.

As for the game itself, I agree that that formation did not work for the most part and it helps Sheff. Utd even more cos they took advantage of that to get a real foot hold in the game and it took us time to figure things out. I do like the fact that we equalized right before half time which allowed us to regroup.

In the second half, we stepped it up offensively and I felt we defended well. Never panicked even under pressure and saw the game out professionally, IMO. We are the ONLY top 6 team that won on the weekend so this was a MASSIVE win for us, in that context.

Great review Ed. I was a bit surprised the formation looked so out of sorts. The first 5/ 10 mins it looked great but once Sheff U took the lead and gained some confidence they started to find holes. On paper I just thought having almost to holding players would protect joe and fab with the wingbacks joining the front four we’d of had enough. Be interesting to see if klopp sticks it out.

{Ed001's Note - it is not designed to deal with a team who comes at you, it is set up to break down a team that sits deep and cedes possession. So it was always going to struggle against the Blades.}

Great piece as usual Ed!
Really liked the look of Osborne at SU AS well (don't worry Ed, not about to do the "are we interested" motd fever thing. )

{Ed001's Note - he stood out for me at Forest as well, though Forest fans were always split on him. Now he has stepped up he is showing how good he is. A very good buy he was for them.}

Absalutely Ed, that was a blatant foul. I don't understand how that was missed.

"Subjective"? Trying to wrap up a player's body with both arms from behind, especially during a jump for a ball is more WWE body slam technique, than football. And it's a clear foul anywhere on the field. In the box, it's a penalty. The most incredible thing is that 4 refs on the field, plus one somewhere in some control room, saw it as clean football play.

Aray, I don't blame the ref on the pitch as he didn't have the angle. Its down to the linesman then the VAR to dig them out of the hole if its missed. Instead they appear frightened to say that they got it wrong.

What’s your thoughts on the lad Sander Berge Ed?

I’ve been impressed with him every time I’ve watched him, even at Genk when faced them in Europe the other season. Seems a big lad who’s willing to go box to box and isn’t too shabby on the ball either.

{Ed001's Note - he's ok, rash in the challenge though and lacks range of passing, though that maybe down to a lack of vision rather than ability to pass. Bit of a head down type of player.}

Good win for us that. Tough game, a fight. You have to win ugly games to win the league. We are now really well placed after a shaky start (ish) we look like we're going to do it.
