What a game we've got tomorrow night, the game will be only the 2nd time the clubs have meet in European competition

December 1966, I was only 3 so I've had to do some googling, the report over both legs is a fantastic read with so much going on during these ties

We played the 1st leg away and got beaten 5 - 1, still to date our heaviest defeat in Europe, 2 - 2 at Anfield so Ajax progressed through to the next round

A teenage Johan cruyff played in both legs scoring 3 goals over both games

Is there anyone on this site old enough to remember these ties, or even maybe attended the 2 - 2 return leg at Anfield

After a surge on the Kop due to bad visibility the supporters up highest surged forward for a better look resulting in fans spilling over onto the pitch, 200 or so injured with 31 supporters going to hospital.

It is a great read with tons more going on than I've mentioned, but my favourite bit was this quote .

Following the first leg, Shankly was adamant that Liverpool would still progress: "This tie is by no means over yet. We will win easily. We will smash in at least seven goals. This was ridiculous. Ajax played defensive football on their own ground. We never play well against defensive teams

Well we didn't win, nor score 7, but tomorrow night, you just never know.

YNWA.

{Ed001's Note - I am defo not, I wasn't born then but I do know after the 5-1 defeat every Liverpool supporter in Percy Street, Bootle woke up to find a tin of Ajax on their doorstep.}

The best thing was Shankly apparently was rubbing his hands in anticipation of the easier draw in Ajax, of whom next to nothing was then known.
And after the Cruyff show in both legs, the letter to The Echo from an Everton fan who reminded readers that Ajax kills all known germs dead 😆
But you’ve got to be of a certain age to remember that advert.

Percy street is steps away from me. I’m on peel road ed001.

{Ed001's Note - you could check and see if there are blue plaques up outside of any of 46, 48 or 50 next time you are down there then mate. 50 was where me nan and grandad lived and I used to spend all my time. 48 was where we lived (with my great-nan) when I was first born and 46 was my great-uncle and great-aunt and then I lived there for a while after they both passed away as my grandad died and I wanted to be near to me nan to keep an eye on her. You would think that would deserve blue plaques, maybe even an English heritage order to preserve them for posterity.....}

The only signs regarding you Ed001 are from the bizzies with your picture on it saying if you see this man call us immediately and do not approach him😁.

Didn’t there used to be a statue of Ed01 outside the Grafton?

There's a statue of Harry Maguire on the pitch at Old Trafford.
