This really is a superb article with many anecdotes that I hadn't heard before. My lasting memory of Smith is when he surged out of defense with the ball like a Rolls-Royce, he didn't do it often but when he did it was a joy to behold. As the Ed. says, his skill isn't what he is remembered for.

Great story ED.

I remember being at a sports do once where Steve Kindon gave a talk. He related the time he travelled to Anfield as a sub when he was with Wolves. He had to come on early as Smith clattered one of there players and gave away a free kick. The first thing he had to do was receive the ball from the free kick and he said Smith came flying in a left a perfect impression of six stud marks in Kindon's shin - giving away another free kick. His team mate once again passed the ball to him and Smith came flying in once more. Kindon says "you really had to admire Smith's accuracy because he put his studs in exactly the same holes in his shin as his first tackle" Priceless!

{Ed001's Note - ouch!}

Fantastic read. Thanks Tris!

{Ed001's Note - cheers Muffet! You are obviously not the real Danny though, he could never have read that many words so quickly.}

lol, I am his slightly more literate impersonator. I loved Danny in his playing days, the problems start when he opens his mouth, or does anything except from play against Man Utd.

Your articles are a welcome distraction from the general dross most people post. Keep ploughing through that ridiculously long list. You are a very good writer.

{Ed001's Note - thank you mate, I am trying to grind it down, but it seems to be increasing rather than decreasing!}

Love that you chose Tommy Smith for this new series Ed. John Giles said that he was a far better footballer than he was ever given credit for and said he would put him into his all time Liverpool xi, at right back. Like you he prefers defenders who can defend! I wonder did Jimmy Greaves score that day he was given the menu?

{Ed001's Note - I don't think Greaves did no. I thought I would start with Smith as he is almost the ultimate example of the underrated player.}

I read somewhere that when Shankly brought him into his office to explain that he would no longer be captain, Smith just stared at him with cold murderous eyes for 15 minutes and never said a single word and then got up and walked out of the office and back out to training.

It’s a great idea for a series, Ed. Well done!

{Ed001's Note - do you know why the other players didn't want Emlyn Hughes to be captain over Smith? Well one of the main reasons anyway. It was because Emlyn was tight as a duck's backside when it came to getting his round in! How times have changed.}

I knew that, yes, it was mentioned in his obituary - how tight must he have been that it made his obit! Tommy Smith also considered him to be two-faced and said that he talked too much! I’d suggest that they were simply polar-opposites, personality wise, who were never going to get on. BTW, Do you happen to know why did Shanks take the captaincy off Smith in the first place?

{Ed001's Note - he was on the fringes of the team, age and injuries were catching up with him.}
