Ed's you keep mentioning liverpool needing HG players but I don't see it. In a 25 man registered squad and 8 needing to be homegrown and unlimited u21 players

Milner
Hendo
Ox
Gomez
Trent
Williams
Elliot.

{Ed002's Note - Sorry, you seem to not understand. I have explained it elsewhere.}

25 minus 8 means maximum 17 non-homegrown so if a club is finishing a transfer window with 20 non-homegrown then they couldn't register 3 of them. might have to sell cheaper in such a scenario and it's a waste for any player of they couldn't play for months (maybe loaned out I suppose but not ideal) .

It’s not about how many home-grown you have, it’s only based how many foreign players you can register (max 17). You could In theory have zero HG players if you only registered a 17 player squad.

It should be called the ‘foreign player rule’ as there seems to be a lot of confusion over how it works, with everyone assuming you need at least 8 HG (not true) .

Hi SG Red, if foreigners spend enough years in a British academy before they are 21 (I think 21 anyway, maybe younger) then they qualify as homegrown as well so it's not a nationality thing, it's giving academy players a chance.

Do we really have issues around the HG quota though? If Tsimikas signs, I make 15 non-HG players, if I haven't missed anyone. And if we add the HG players to the squad (TAA, Milner, Gomez, Hendo, Ox) the we have 20. Add the youngsters of Williams, Jones, Kelleher, Elliot, Brewster) and we have 25. It's tight sure, but is this something we need to worry about over the next couple of seasons rather than the upcoming one?

{Ed001's Note - you have missed a couple, we have 17 in the first team squad, which is why we need to get rid of some or loan them out.}

I am quite disappointed in Tsmikas over Lewis not for his ability but because we are walking a tight rope in terms of the home grown quota and Lewis would have helped towards that immensely, using a spot on a back up full back seems a bit of a waste.

Fair point Sean - was meaning ‘foreign player’ as in someone not coming through the UK junior system, not a foreigner per se.

No worries SG I think we are all learning more about this stuff from what we read here day by day. I hope some clubs come in for some of those like Grujic and Shaq as I don't see them getting minutes so better for the club and the players if they started afresh somewhere else. Same goes for the odd homegrown player like I think we have enough midfielders that Harry Wilson would hardly kick a ball if he stays so better for the club if we could sell him and better for the player to move on and kick start his career somewhere else.
