Observations not only from today's game but recent games.

1. To sustain a title push and challenge on all fronts our midfield needs a Havertz, Aouar or Brandt type player who can not only create but weigh in with their fair share of goals. Havertz appears to be out of our price but the other two with a couple of sales we should look to bring in.

2. For a team challenging on all fronts our back up strikers fall short of the standards. I love Origi like the next man but sentiments aside he needs to be moved on.

3. This one is a tough one because I like Gomez but I see why Klopp is looking at a first choice partner and why Diego Carlos's seems to be the man. Teams tend to target Gomez as a weak point and Diego Carlos is not someone that will be bullied easily.

We have just won the league without that type player, we got knocked out of the CL. Because of our back up keeper, the fa cup to a good Chelsea side and the league cup to go and win the club World Cup.

Everyone saying about origi but how many will come and rotate he just needs football matches. I’d rather switch shaq. Origi is a different option to what we have.

Gomez has lost one game in the pl in like three years. Maybe Klopp realises Lovren needs replacing but rather than buying a ‘rotation’ option he wants a first team defender. Previously we have had a good 11 then bought back up players which is a method that got us into a thirty year wait. Imo it’s nothing to do with Gomez being weak, at times he’s been playing better than VVD this season.

We are 23 points clear can we not just enjoy it for a little bit?

Love how suddenly everyone is an expert on Diego Carlos. Honestly, who can bare to watch a 90 min sevilla match to know how he actually is. Maybe old time posters can remember 10 years ago a certain Croatian cb at Lyon who was supposed to be the answer, what do most think of him now? Simon Kjaer is another who was destined for greatness on this site, whatever happened to him?

Not picking on you Alonso1786, I appreciate your post, but I don't think the eds are having us on when they say there is very little money anywhere. Not just Liverpool but almost every team around. So that also means we are unlikely to generate much money from sales of potentially Wilson, Shaqiri, Grujic, Lovren because no one will be able to pay the kind of money we would want. That goes for Origi too but doesn't seem to be any hurry for him to go either.

We got knocked out because we couldn't finish our chances, do not blame adrian for that. Our front 3 have been missing bucketloads all season and it came back to bite us. It needs to be fixed.

It's worth noting that Klopp has tried to play an attacking midfield player in his middle 3 to carry the ball and pick passes. First full season, he put Lallana there, who was a no. 10 or wide player prior to then. Then he brought in Ox to play there and it was working well (completely displaced Gini for a while) until he got injured. And then he dropped £60+m on Keita.

And Gini, Hendo and Fabinho aren't exactly rock trolls either. I appreciate they're not de Bryune level or anything, but they're reasonably efficient with their passing and can pick a pass between the lines when it's on.

I'm reaching the point where I think Origi should be moved on. I do rate him but it's obvious that Klopp doesn't want to use a striker of his style, even occasionally (Was Everton the last time he started through the middle and stayed there for the majority of the game? ), and he's ineffective as a winger.

Gomez has been the better of the two in quite a few games this season. Van dijk is quality obviously so don't read that statement the wrong way. Gomez has had a few bad games but so has big chief as well.

It would be madness to spend big money on another starting centre half when gomez is there. I don't think he plays well at right or left back so to sign another starter and have him rotate as utility back up would be a complete waste. Hoever is even a better right back than gomez and neco has that covered for backup going foward it would seem.

Lovern is a bomb scare and matip seems to get injured quite a lot so i can see the need for another quality centre half but at a time when pennies are being counted id rather the money go towards another foward thinking player if there are any signings to be made.

Fabinho and matip are more than capable of providing cover if there is no money to spend. There might not be as many games as normal next year who knows?

Gomez is one of the best young centre backs in world football and is no where near his peak. To waste all the investment in his playing time so far and relegate him to utility back up would be absolutely crazy.

If another defensive player was to be signed it should be a utility player and not a player that relegates gomez to that fate.

Any money generated through player sales that is availiable to spend must surely go towards front 3 backup. That is the weakest area of our squad. Specifically right and left foward.

Just my opinion of course.

Love it, Lfcfan_03beef. Suddenly Diego Carlos is the second coming of Alan Hansen. Personally, never seen the guy play but he must be good enuff if Klopp is interested in him. That's all I can say.

OP, you say we need the players you mentioned (none of which we can actually afford at all, btw) to create. Sorry, is that not what Naby has been doing very well for us post lockdown?

Now, Gomez is the next one on the firing line cos he struggled a bit of late. You are aware that Gomez is the only CB to have actually outplayed VVD during games this season, right? So we should let him go and who do we bring in knowing full well we cannot afford said CB?

We have completely backstroked the PL this season and pocketed the CL last season so can we just enjoy our time for now and let the summer bring what it will instead of trying to sell anyone and everyone who did not meet our taste esp. those like Gomez who is a stud at CB and replace them with players we can't afford.

I agree that Gomez has not been playing well of late, but I would not judge him based on how he's performed in the last few matches given that we've already won the league and have nothing to play for. Having said that, I understand why Klopp wants to bring in someone like Diego Carlos given the injury history that our centre backs (other than Virgil) have.

I have watched Carlos play for Sevilla on a couple of occasions and I think he's a very good player. He seems to be similar to Virgil in a sense that he is dominant in the air, athletic and can play a pass as well. He's very much an aggressive centre back, always looking for opportunities to nick the ball in front of the attacker and starting an attack. I think he would be a good fit our system given that Gomez is usually the more aggressive of our two central defenders and would imo be an improvement over Gomez who occasionally struggles with the long ball over the top.

The question I think would be if it is worth it to pay big money for Carlos and potentially stifle the development of Gomez who is already performing at high level at such a young age. Curious as to your assessment on Carlos and thoughts ed01? Cheers.

{Ed001's Note - not seen enough of him to judge him, sorry.}

Appreciate all your posts.

Maybe it’s my short term memory and I need a reminder that form can dip. Gomez is young and class, just hope his form picks up quickly as it has dropped and he tends to get bullied and target which is a worry.

The midfield however is an area that needs addressing. I know we have just won the title with our current squad but even champions improve on what they have. Problem is money, which we don’t seem to have a lot of due to the C.V.. We need a midfielder who contribute their fair share of goals and break down teams who place 10 men behind the ball which tends to happen to us a lot. Hendo is class, Fabinho is class and Gini is underrated outside of Liverpool not that it matters but we need something different.

Just a final note on Diego Carlos, I don’t claim to know a great deal about him but I have seen a few games and he is highly thought of. One thing I do know is he doesn’t get bullied, although whether he would fit in our system is another matter.
