Good morning mate, good read that. How would you rate alisson amongst those three if you don't mind me asking?

{Ed001's Note - best of the lot but he plays in a different era from two of them, with a goalkeeper's game being the most changed of all. So it is probably unfair to compare VDS and Schmeichel.}

Even though he was a United player, Van Der Sar was one of my favourite players to watch growing up, he had this elegance about him. Bit of a shame so many people overlook him when rating the best keepers ever to play in the Prem nowadays.

Interesting read as always Ed.

2 questions:

1. In the specific areas that you compared them, where do you think our Alisson still need to improve? I personally can’t think of any except maybe command of area?

2. Were you surprised Van Der Sar stayed around Fulham for quite some time then? No other clubs were interested?

{Ed001's Note - 1. I totally agree with you, it is command of the area that he mostly needs to work on. Alisson should bully everyone in there and control it when a set piece is coming in.

2. Not really a surprise as no one really wanted him in the first place. People didn't understand what was so good about him then, as he was one of those players who made it look so easy. It was actually a surprise when Man Utd went in for him. In hindsight they should have gone for him much sooner.}

Ed001 where would you put Neville Southall in that list would love to hear where ed025 puts him best goalkeeper when I was growing up.

{Ed025's Note - one if not THE best keeper i have ever seen grino, up there with ray clemence and schmichael in my view mate..

I think degea could have become a true great like Schmeichel. (Who I rate as the greatest keeper ever) Whatever happened with contract, or Madrid turning his head, struggling with that defense or just crumbling from bad performances, I see him as one of the more disappointing could have beens. Cracking article mate.

good read Ed, thanks for that. i remember Edwin siging for utd i remember thinking at the time that they were still desperately trying to replace Schmeichel. i guess i didn't understand what was so good about him at the time either, perhaps it was cos i wasnt paying Fulham much notice!?!?

I had always rated Edwin since his days at Ajax. He had a rough time at Juve but him coming to Fulham at the time, revitalized his career and by the time he got to Utd, it seemed he was given a second lease on life. For me, he was a GK legend way before he went to Utd and my opinion only grew bigger of him with the career he had there. A truly brilliant GK, IMO.

ed025 ray Clemence was just to early for me to appreciate Bruce was when I was old enough to understand the game a little better. But for me Southall was a better keeper than Schmichael the year you won the league I think he was player of the year and I can't remember a keeper getting it again and Big Nev was the top for so long. What I would say about Alisson is he is up there and with the new balls moving so much what his doing is amazing only a champions league game in the group stages where I thought he should have saved that goal so in nearly 2 season that's some going.

{Ed025's Note - clemence and southall were more than just keepers grino, they were a presence, and alisson seems to be in that bracket as well mate..
